All India Federation of Self- Employed Women's Association

About us

The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) is a labour union of poor self-employed women workers in the informal economy. Since its inception in 1972 by Smt. Ela Bhatt in Gujarat, SEWA has actively employed women with no employer or fixed employer-employee relationship. These women are often not represented by traditional trade unions, and their methods of organisation cannot be employed in a sector in which the work and employers are not recognised. SEWA was born in the shape of a confluence of three movements: labour, cooperative and women. The rapid progress made by SEWA in organising women in Gujarat lead to a demand for creation of similar organisations in other states too. SEWA Bharat was thus set up in 1982 in response to this demand. Its main aim is to facilitate the formation of new member organisations across the country and to promote their growth and development. SEWA Bharat is, therefore, a federation of SEWA member organisations, with the mandate to highlight issues concerning women working in the informal sector, and to strengthen the capacity of the organisations that serve the interests of these women. Presently nine such SEWA member organisations are working in 50 districts of Nine states, and together they accounted for a total membership around 13 lakhs and counting. SEWA Bharat concentrates on the following: -Employment -Income -Nutritious food -Health Care -Housing -Asset -Organised Strength -Leadership -Self Reliance -Education -Child Care

  • Migration isn’t just about livelihoods - it’s about survival, dignity, and systemic inequity. As development shifts from villages to cities, people are compelled to migrate in search of healthcare, education, safety, and recognition - needs often unmet in their home regions. In our session, 'Understanding Migration Beyond Livelihood', we explored how migration is shaped by exclusion, caste and gender biases, and the absence of formal protections. Women migrants, in particular, face heightened vulnerabilities, from health risks to economic insecurity. True inclusion requires systemic reform: portable social security, dignified housing, and governance that dismantles structural inequalities. Migrants aren’t beneficiaries of charity - they are workers whose rights, identities, and contributions must be recognised and respected. #Migration #SEWABharat #WomenWorkers #WomenEmpowerment

  • Migrant workers are the backbone of our cities, yet they remain trapped in policy blind spots - excluded from housing, social security, and basic rights. During our recent session on ‘Legal Scope, Urban Dynamics, and the Role of Migrants in Shaping Cities’, we explored the urgent need to shift from short-term relief to long-term, structural solutions that recognise migration as central to economic growth. Key takeaways from the session included: ✅ Strengthening legal frameworks and enforcement ✅ Ensuring housing rights for dignity and stability ✅ Building inclusive urban policies that recognise migrants as citizens of our cities The conversation reinforced a simple truth: true urban inclusion begins with recognising the invisible, ensuring justice, and safeguarding dignity for all who build our cities. #Migration #SEWABharat #WomenWorkers #WomenEmpowerment

"I migrated to Delhi from Kolkata in search of better livelihood opportunities. In Kolkata, I earned Rs. 100 per day rolling leaves, but it wasn’t enough to support my family. In Delhi, I work as a domestic helper, which helps cover household expenses and my child’s education. However, I don’t have a permanent home and have to keep moving from one place to another. Financially, living in Delhi is a constant struggle," shared Kalpana ben, a domestic worker and a SEWA Delhi member. On January 14th, 2025, SEWA Bharat hosted an event on ‘Moving Lives, Shaping Cities: Enhancing Mobility, Social Security, and Urban Integration for Inter-State Migrants,’ where we focused on the experiences pertaining to migration of women working in the informal economy. Migrants play a vital role in driving the country’s economic growth and GDP, yet their living and working conditions remain fragmented, unregulated, and unorganised, both at their origin and destination. The role of Bridge Institions offering credit plus services to make women more credit ready and credit willing must be recognised . Real credit trail can be generated if theSHG Bank linkages credit history can be tracked . Due to unavailability of this digitally so far , women loose out on having a credit history to apply for higher loans directly from Bank . Women’s self esteem as an economic contributor needs to be built up through organising them for greater voice, visibility and validity. Bank officials need to be more engaged with the community to understand the nuances of the trade group they cater to. Supply and demand gap can be bridged only when all the actors and institutions in the eco system work towards a common goal.

PLENARY SESSION I: From Borrowers to Builders: Women’s Role in India’s Financial Growth Story moderated by Ankita Bhat, Senior Manager, MSC (MicroSave Consulting) at the #8thGenderEqualitySummit. The session explored the persistent challenges women entrepreneurs face in accessing formal credit, despite their growing contribution to India’s economy. With only a small percentage of women-led business loans coming from formal institutions, many rely on informal credit, limiting their financial independence and scalability. Key Takeaways: 🔹Bridging the Credit Gap: Only a fraction of women entrepreneurs taking formal credit, underscoring the need for targeted financial inclusion strategies. 🔹 Rethinking Financial Access: Women entrepreneurs require more than loans—they need support systems that build financial literacy and confidence. 🔹 Innovative Lending Models: Collateral-free loans, post-loan support, and AI-driven credit assessments can help remove biases and expand access. Expert Insights: Krishna Thacker, Senior Program Officer, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: "Women need confidence to lead enterprises and contribute to the economy." Sanchita Mitra, National Coordinator, SEWA Bharat: "We must make women more comfortable taking loans from banks." Rajarshi Dutta Barua, Associate Partner, MSC (MicroSave Consulting) "Alternative credit models and a lifecycle approach are crucial for women entrepreneurs." Padmini Vora, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, TransUnion CIBIL Ltd  "Credit decisions should be data-driven, not based on biases or assumptions." To foster a truly inclusive financial ecosystem, institutions, policymakers, and ecosystem enablers must collaborate to create equitable, accessible, and scalable credit solutions for women entrepreneurs. #UNGCNI #ForwardFaster2030 #GES2025 #GenderEqualitySummit

In today’s digital world, financial independence and digital literacy are more critical than ever - especially for women. Yet, many still lack true ownership and access to their digital and financial assets, often controlled by male family members. Limited access to mobile phones further widens the gap, restricting opportunities to develop essential skills. At SEWA Bharat, we are committed to bridging this gap. Through our digital and financial literacy trainings, we empower women in the informal economy with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take control of their financial and digital futures. Watch this inspiring reel to hear firsthand from two incredible women from SEWA in Delhi who have changed their lives for the better through these trainings. Wishing you all a happy #InternationalWomensDay - let’s continue working towards a future where every woman has the power to thrive! 💜✨ #FinancialEmpowerment #DigitalLiteracy #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction
