WEBINAR ON OUTLOOK 2025 FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY Yesterday, the leading textile magazine The Indian Textile Journal (ITJ), organised a webinar on the topic of Outlook for the Textile industry for the year 2025. I was one of the panelists in this webinar which was moderated by Avinash Mayekar , MD Suvin Advisors and my co-panelists were Raja Shanmugam, MD Warsaw International, Umasankar Sinha Mahapatra , MD Pulcra Chemicals and Ashok Juneja , Director Saurer India. The experts from the different industry sections have shared their views on industry verticals like garment manufacturing & exports, textile machinery, textile chemicals and overall 360 degrees view of the entire textile value chain. The discussion was mainly on the following topics. 📌How did the textile and allied industries performed in the year 2024? 📌What was the impact of global events like wars/conflicts, demand contraction and policy changes on the Indian textile industry? 📌What are the industry expectations for different sectors of the industry in the forthcoming budget? 📌What opportunities exist currently for the Indian textile industry and how do we see the industry trajectory in year 2025? The key takeaways of the webinar are as follows: ✅Higher raw material prices reduced competitiveness of the industry in 2024. China's dumping of MMF knitted fabrics affected the industry badly till such time the government declared the minimum import price. The spinning industry faced an under utilisation due to over capacity and reduced yarn exports and local demand. Garment exports were down. Only in the last 2 months the export orders have increased partly due to the Bangladesh problem. Textile machinery and Textile Chemicals industry had its own problems coming from lesser demand from textile consumers. ✅Increased shipping costs due to changed routes, EU's strong push for Sustainable manufacturing and QCO for polyester fibre and yarn had some impact on the business. ✅Industry expects the budget to take cognisance of the criticality of the textile industry and expect that the finance minister gives an extension to RoDTEP scheme, abolishes 11% import duty on superfine cotton imports, extends the PLI scheme to cover garment manufacturing and gives special attention to MSMEs. ✅Due to recalibration in geo-political situation, disturbances in Bangladesh and pick up in orders from US, in last 2 months export orders have increased. Most textile clusters are operating above 90%. Resumption of the UK FTA discussion is a good news. If all these factors play out well then perhaps 2025 will be an inflexion point for our industry. Industry is preparing for green manufacturing and with increased focus on man made fibres and increase in the capacity of garments manufacturing, India can hope to increase its global share. As India Inc. announces its Q2 results, it’s evident that the quarter brought a mix of outcomes. While some sectors performed as per expectations, others especially in the consumption and manufacturing sectors, faced challenges. These were driven by factors such as reduced consumer spending, rising raw material costs, and unregulated import pressure from neighbouring countries. For most of our listed entities in India, the quarter mirrored similar trends. We are confident we can navigate these challenges while staying steadfast in the future. Our petrochemicals business continues to face headwinds from unrestricted global imports and pricing pressures while the fertiliser segment maintained steady performance. SPIC’s FY 25 Q2 topline saw an improvement compared to the corresponding period last year, underscoring resilience amid a challenging landscape. Our commitment to operational and energy efficiency remains central to our strategy. As India advances toward the ‘One Nation One Fertiliser Scheme’, we are aligning our operations to ensure readiness and active participation in line with Government of India directives. Manali Petrochemicals Ltd.’s overseas subsidiaries, PennWhite - Global Chemical Solutions and Notedome, performed well this quarter, contributing positively to the consolidated results despite a dip in MPL’s standalone results. MPL’s announced expansions, including the Propylene Glycol (PG) and Polyester Polyol (PP) projects and its new plans in western India, are progressing as planned. Across all AM International Holdings Private Limited's businesses, our focus continues to be on optimising operations, reducing costs, and executing our CAPEX plans in the coming quarters. It gives me immense pride to be part of Epsilon Advanced Materials Pvt. www.polymerupdate.com *Weak price trend impacts margins in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector* The Indian chemical industry recorded an average revenue growth of 4 percent year-on-year (yoy) in the April-June 2024 quarter, largely driven by the specialty chemicals segment where volumes increased despite weak prices trend.
