What keeps us motivated to launch Sooorya EV in the market, especially in developing countries, is the positive social and climate impact we can make. Affordable last mile mobility can make the journey to and fro work less difficult, especially for women folk. And, electric vehicles do not contribute to heat, noise and air pollution in our neighbourhood. Climate funds need to nurture EV startups and fleet operators, because switching to electric vehicles can drastically reduce our burning of fossil oils to power road transport, a major contributor to the climate crisis… “Alok Sharma, the president of the Cop26 climate summit in 2021, said: “The results of the Guardian’s survey should be another wake-up call for governments to stop prevaricating and inject much more urgency into delivering on the climate commitments they have already made.” He said world leaders needed to get on and deliver on the pledge they made to transition away from fossil fuels at Cop28 in December. World’s top climate scientists expect global heating to blast past 1.5C target Christiana Figueres, the UN climate chief who oversaw the landmark 2015 Paris climate deal where the 1.5C goal was adopted, said: “These climate scientists are doing their job. It’s imperative that all Indian citizens start focusing on achieving energy independence, in order for India to become prosperous again. Switching to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy, will generate more employment and wealth within the country. India spends over $200 billion every year to import fossil fuels that get burned in ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles, polluting the air we breathe. Instead of making fossil oil exporting countries rich, India can become rich… “India is poised to achieve energy independence in its mobility sector by 2047, according to a groundbreaking report released today by global non-profit RMI (formerly known as Rocky Mountain Institute). Titled India at 2047: A Vision for Energy Independence in the Mobility Sector, the report outlines a bold roadmap for the nation, emphasising the need for 100 percent clean fuel vehicle sales—predominantly electric—across all road transport segments by 2043. The analysis underscores the transformative potential of this shift, projecting a 91 percent reduction in crude oil consumption within the road transport sector, translating to cumulative savings of Rs 160 lakh crore (US$ 1,923 billion). Additionally, the report estimates a nearly 14-gigatonne reduction in cumulative carbon emissions, marking an 87 percent decrease compared to the progress-as-usual scenario projected for 2047. Key recommendations from the report include the implementation of cohesive supply- and demand-side policies, the development of innovative financing mechanisms, and the promotion of a circular economy for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The #PM #EDRIVE Scheme has been approved by the Cabinet (proposal placed by MHI with a financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore for two years to expedite the adoption of EVs by providing upfront incentives for their purchase, as well as by facilitating the establishment of essential charging infrastructure for #EVs. This initiative promotes #electricmobility through #subsidies for #electric 2 & 3 Wheelers, #buses, #ambulances, and #trucks. One should look into this along with the state incentives available in each of the states' industrial policies to maximise the benefit. Here is the bifurcation with primary conditions: 1. Electric 2-W & 3-Wheelers - ₹3,679 crore (24.79 lakh 2-Wheelers, 3.16 lakh 3-Wheelers) - e-voucher issued to buyers with Aadhaar authentication while purchasing. Such voucher would be uploaded by the dealer on the assigned portal to demand incentives. 2. Electric Buses - ₹4,391 crore (for procurement of 14,028 e-buses by STUs/public transport agencies subject to more than 40 lacs population in cities) - Preference to those scrapping old buses under Vehicle Scrapping Scheme 3. Electric Trucks - ₹500 crore - Incentives for trucks with scrapping certificate from MoRTH-approved centres 4. Electric Ambulances - ₹500 crore - Performance standards to be set by MoHFW, MoRTH 5. Charging Infrastructure (to address range anxiety while driving EVs) - ₹2,000 crore (Install 22,100 fast chargers for e-4Ws and 48,400 for e-2Ws/e-3Ws) 6. Upgradation of testing agencies with an outlay of ₹780 Cr. This scheme is a enhanced/improved version of FAME Policy, though focuses more on rapid EV adoption. It is unlikely to include Hybrid vehicles, but need to wait for the clarity. 70% of India's domestic freight is moved by medium and heavy-duty trucks (MHDTs). Of the 5.7 million trucks operating on Indian roads as of January 2024, over 90% were using diesel. The electrification of MHDTs presents untapped opportunities for #climateaction in India. We recently co-hosted a workshop on ZETs in India: Building Capacity, Driving Impact. The event brought together Logistics Service Providers (LSPs), Financial Institutions (FIs) and Shippers. It provided a platform for robust knowledge sharing on zero-emission trucks (ZETs). Among the highlights were:   ⭕ Discussions on high purchase cost of ZETs in India ⭕ The need to make ZET related operational data available to FIs to instil confidence in the technology ⭕ Concerns around battery costs and safety ⭕ Asset utilisation, which is the minimum distance the truck runs to be considered viable in operations, and its impact on the total cost of e-truck ownership (TCO) ⭕ Boosting ZET adoption among large fleet owners ⭕ ZET financing support options such as carbon credits The workshop was organised by us in partnership with the CoEZET IITMadras, under the aegis of NITI Aayog's #e-FAST platform. Some thoughts on the OLA Electric IPO. - - The first bike was delivered in Dec 2021, so quite a young company doing an IPO :) - Sales seem to be stagnating for the past few months (too early to call it out anyway) - Will see how it develops its battery tech capabilities - Other players also scaling up - EV Chetak, Bajaj CNG Bike (Darkhorse) and iQube - Good R&D spends - Lithium battery and component imports - 37% of it from China (Increasing YoY) - One full warranty cycle on EVs not yet done - 870 Showrooms - majority less than 1 Yr old - Deep-pocketed OEMs are also playing the EV game but ICE OEMs' FCF can easily fund the EV businesses. - ICE OEMs' war chests, distribution network, and manufacturing prowess are far bigger and maybe even better! - 2 Triggers for the company - Financial and Fundamental - Financial - Sales volumes pick up rapidly and operating leverage kicks in - Monitor sales trends, Fame subsidy, and Unit Economics - Fundamental - Innovation on the product side, especially the battery - Mileage, cost, etc (Innovation in the truest sense) These are just some random thoughts. New Rules for Innovative L2-5 Category Vehicles in India! The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has introduced new regulations for a unique category of motor vehicles: L2-5. What are L2-5 Category Vehicles? - L2-5 refers to a three-wheeled vehicle that offers the flexibility of transforming into a two-wheeler (L2 category). This innovative design features a detachable rear module, allowing owners to switch between configurations based on their needs. Key Highlights of the New Rules: - Clear Definitions: The notification introduces clear definitions for L2-5, L2-5 M (passenger carrying), and L2-5 N (goods carrying) vehicles. - Single Registration: A single registration number will be assigned to the L2-5 vehicle, regardless of configuration (two-wheeler or three-wheeler). - Standard Dimension Plates: L2-5 vehicles will have specific registration plate dimensions (200mm x 100mm). - Identification Number: The identification number, including month and year of manufacture, will comply with the AIS 177:2021 standard. - Safety Standards: All L2-5 vehicles must adhere to the safety requirements outlined in AIS 177:2021 until corresponding Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications are notified.
