Radio, Are You Listening? Jagdeep Kapoor was recently interviewed by Shanta Saikia of ADGULLY about whether 730 new FM Radio channels in 243 new cities and small towns in India will be a viable proposition in the long run. According to Jagdeep Kapoor, Founder, Chairman and MD, Samsika Marketing Consultants, “The penetration of private radio channels deeper into Indian cities will also lead to the penetration of brands and advertisers through this mass medium.” Shedding light on the current state of the private FM radio industry in India, Mr. Jagdeep Kapoor added, “There is less internal competition and more external competition. As customers get used to streaming apps on their phones and even in their cars, private radio competes for attention share with both audio and audiovisual competitors. ▶ But the key differentiator that Radio can leverage is that it is ‘Live’ and that it is ‘Alive’. ▶ It is Live unlike preset playlists or even albums on a streaming app, and it is alive because it has a local RJ who may be much more interesting than just listening to tracks back to back.” Similarly, when it comes to the strong focus on regional and local, Jagdeep Kapoor says, "▶ Local private radio content always generates local stars, celebrities and helps highlight local issues. ▶ When the cities increase, the RJs, the artists, the shows and even the Brands will have a local flavour because of the nuances of each city’s culture, issues and taste. ▶ Vocal for Local is literally the mantra for radio, which is the perfect platform to be vocal about local culture, topics and tastes.” Sharing his view, Jagdeep Kapoor further highlights that the key issues to be addressed in private FM radio are: ▶ differentiate with content in the age of streaming apps, ▶ show what true radio and spoken word content is capable of in a live setting, in a way that can compete with podcasts and streaming apps. He says, "Listeners aren’t attracted to technology or platforms, they are attracted to content. And if the content is good, their ears will gravitate towards that RJ or channel, irrespective of whether it’s on Radio or on streaming apps or podcasts." Change in IPL auction rules makes it even more of a spectacle Making the fourth retention so costly (18 crores) has forced most franchises to reassess their IPL auction strategy. The change in the Right-to-Match rules also adds another element of suspense to the proceedings. We are all talking about the IPL retention deadline. In fact, social media is in a tizzy with all sorts of stories floating around. Come October 31, and it will finally be known to the world who are the players retained by the 10 franchises. While a number of names are already out in the open, there is still conjecture over the fate of a number of key individuals. But that’s not the point here. The point is how the IPL Governing Council and the BCCI have successfully made this process far more interesting than it could have been. One such decision I want to highlight is the fourth retention at 18 crores. With this one call, the entire auction dynamic has changed. Had it been the conventional 18, 14, 11, 8 – almost every franchise would have used the 8-crore bracket or whatever the lowest one was. At 18, things are vastly different. All of a sudden, people are being forced to rethink. Should we or should we not? Should we use the Right To Match instead? Is it a risk retaining someone for 18 crores as the fourth option? This is the one decision that has made the auction a level playing field and credit must be given to the IPL GC and the BCCI. There is conjecture over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) retaining Andre Russell. The chances are he might not be retained, because of this 18-crore fourth-retention fee. Paying 18 crores to two players would mean you have spent 30 percent of your entire auction purse. And that’s what makes it challenging for teams. You need to be extremely clear in your thinking if you go for four retentions. No half-measures will work, and that’s what this auction is all about. Mumbai, for example, are clear they want to retain the four core players in Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Some other teams aren’t as clear, and will hence go into the auction with a different mindset. The change in the RTM rule is yet another fantastic call, which has added much to the auction. Some of the new rules have also empowered players to turn free agents and take a bold plunge. If they are confident of their market value, they can indeed go into the auction and test the waters. On the other hand, franchises can release a player if they are confident of getting him back at a value less than what they are paying currently. If this arithmetic goes awry, which will surely happen with some teams, the entire auction strategy could go bust. While, for the longest time, we have asked where the next innovation in the IPL is going to come from, we finally have our answer. It is in the auction, and that’s what has made it far more interesting, adding to the robustness of the IPL brand. Now to all the disclosures 24 hours from now.

Lenskart, a visionary company in the eyewear industry, has been a beacon of innovation and customer service. However, my experience highlighted a gap that many businesses, regardless of size or success, can fall into. Despite taking an appointment, I was unable to receive the complimentary eye test - a key service offering and a lead magnet for Lenskart - due to the absence of the store manager, who also serves as the refractionist. This wasn't my first encounter with such an issue, pointing towards a systemic problem rather than an isolated incident. Peyush Bansal, the CEO of Lenskart.com and a respected figure on Shark Tank India, has often emphasized the importance of standardization of processes and automation in scaling businesses. Yet, it appears that even the most well-intentioned advice can be challenging to implement within one's own organization. This experience isn't just about a missed eye test; it's a reflection on the broader entrepreneurial journey. It serves as a reminder that the road to success is paved with continuous learning, adaptation, and the humility to recognize that there is always room for improvement. To my fellow entrepreneurs, especially those who have faced criticism or felt discouraged after receiving feedback, remember that perfection is a moving target.
