Google hints at a shift in how ccTLDs are valued for SEO. It's not a good news. Traditionally, country code top-level domains (ccTLD) provided a localization boost, but this might soon fade. 🌍 The LDCP algorithm boosted ccTLDs like .in for Indian users. Why Every SEO Should Build a Site Database. I have a database of over 1000 websites, many of which I've been monitoring for over 2 years, some 3. I started it just to keep track of a few sites I found but I've added to it over time. So what's in it? These are websites and case studies from other SEOs, sites I've encountered and sites I've found. There are black hat sites. PR drive sites. Sites ranking with no backlinks. Topical authority case study sites. The sites of guru's HCU-impacted sites. And a lot more. The image shows a DR24 e-commerce site that is outranking DR 80 sites in the same niche. Building my own site database has been one of the smartest moves of my career because the value compounds. I get to see what's working and what isn't across various sectors. So, how do you do the same? Easy. If you see a website doing something interesting or you encounter a site on a pitch or an enquiry, add it to your list. And that's it. The power of this compounds as you get to see performance over time. For example, I've just found a site that enjoyed huge growth through buying links, but now it's starting to drop in rankings. I see loads of learning points in my database. Everything from content systems to link networks and more. I'm sure some smart SEO person could whip up a Chrome extension that makes collecting sites much easier than manually adding them, like I do. But however you do this, start building your own learning database of websites and you'll have an asset that will help you to become a far better SEO.

It's a challenging time to be in SEO. At the top of my mind is how some of the biggest publishers in affiliate have been gobbling up smaller competitors in the search results. What's most frustrating is that a lot of publishers dominating are reaping the reward of being an authoritative news site and are doing affiliate as a secondary revenue source. It can feel kind of hopeless if you're working on a smaller, specialized site - even if your content is good. But, taking a step back from the ramifications of losing ground, there are a couple key insights to learn from as to why big brands keep benefiting from Google updates:   1. Large publishers have established brand recognition and authority. Branded searches, direct traffic, brand mentions, external links - these are all trust signals. Big brands end up in the news more, which leads to more branded searches, mentions, and links. People are more likely to include a brand they know in their search queries. They are also more likely to go directly to a website they know. News outlets are more likely to quote sources from known brands. Many large publishers have done syndication in their past and/or present, which has helped them build links over the years.   2. Large publishers who do SEO well are building internal links to their most important evergreen pages continuously because they publish new articles that link back to the relevant evergreen pages at a larger scale. We don't talk enough about internal links. Just like with external links, growing a page's internal link profile naturally and consistently is going to yield great results and make it a lot harder for smaller sites who don't publish at the same scale to compete.   Obviously, struggling to compete with big brand recognition and high-volume publishing is impossible to solve in the short-term. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the next Google update stops rewarding the top-tier publishers for content on topics they have less expertise in than some of the smaller, more specialized sites. It's time. It's long overdue, in fact. And we need it before said smaller sites disappear from results entirely.   However, I do think it's imperative for smaller brands to start focusing on their brand strategy immediately. It's time to start bringing together SEO, digital PR, and content marketing. That means focusing more on brand building via more traditional marketing efforts and digital PR. It could involve doing original research and partnering with others to deliver best-in-class content. It also means following content marketing best practices: develop a unique angle, choose a platform for your content, build an audience, and deliver consistent content to them. Rely less on organic traffic over time and build an audience you can provide content to directly. As you build a message people start to recognize as yours, they will seek out your brand and share it with others. And then you'll start to reap some SEO benefit from that.
