Today was spent discussing 'harassment by Autodesk' with a number of architects in India. This is not new, I have been hearing such stories from for many years, from all kinds of practices–small to medium and large. Many architects shared that they receive such calls and emails from Autodesk, despite having acquired the required number of licenses and being fully compliant. Some shared that the licensing system of Autodesk is flawed and lacks flexibility, which is used by Autodesk to extort more money. Autodesk has a near-monopoly when it comes to CAD software. To some extent, I blame architecture institutes for this, because a majority of architecture institutes in India only teach and talk about AutoCAD - and when students enter the profession, it becomes difficult for them to switch to any other CAD software. It is high time architects think beyond AutoCAD. I will be writing about this on ArchitectureLive! soon. Feel free to share your experiences/views in comments, or send them through private message. This is just a comparison of the cities. However, there isn´t enough information to develop a complete analysis of urban space in every town. The different types of grids are influenced by physical aspects such as topography, climate and nature, and the distinct urban systems. Furthermore, these are influenced by economic, politic and social situations, determined by the market, and culture of the communities located in every zone of the city. And, especially by its history.

@rajeshadvani - Time for change. It's true, AutoCAD has a monopoly, and we need to look beyond it. I’ve experienced this during my practice and noticed many pitfalls in the way we architects work: too many software subscriptions with hardly any return on investment. We should not only move away from AutoCAD but also support innovative software from India that is customized to the needs of Indian designers. To address this, I am developing a single software for design, estimation, and project management—one economically feasible solution for all our needs. This is not a promotion; I have a long way to go, but I am committed to it. Our fraternity needs revival in terms of rules, fees, and scope of work. There are many problems, and it’s time someone from our community steps up to solve them.

Despite all limitations and challenges imposed by climate, physical, social, political and economic factors, Architects, Planners and Engineers involved and engaged in  making Chandigarh a distinct reality, did use their knowledge, skill, expertise and understanding to embed element of  sustainability in all acts related to planning, designing and construction of the city. This fact needs  detailed and in depth research and recognition, because it all started  in  the  year 1950 , when Chandigarh  started creating its footprints on the site identified for the capital city . Issue remains important for the reason that concept of urban sustainability was non-existent  in the dictionary of planning of cities at that time .Considering the fact that Chandigarh  made valuable contribution in the domain of urban sustainability, which  remains unknown , un-researched and un-documented, for doing justice to the city and professional contributing to making the city sustainable , it will be important to map and document various aspects of sustainable development. For realistically and rationally mapping the contributions made by  the capital city of Chandigarh in the realm of  urban sustainability, it  will be  desirable that a detailed study on the subject needs to be  taken up by the Chandigarh administration, researchers, scholars and experts having commitment in the domain of sustainable urban development.
