"Standardization" in manufacturing, often viewed peripherally is a criticality, more so in terms of electronics. It is a pivotal issue for development, acceptance of products and associated scales of production. The main difference between the international and national standards is perhaps in the scope, with the former looking at consistency and the latter being need specific. For India’s burgeoning electronics sector, which has set course to become a significant player in the electronics export market, adopting standards is instrumental in harmonizing products and processes across borders. Sharing my piece on this very important issue in The Economic Times today. The Central govt has sanctioned modernisation of semi conductor laboratory (SCL), Mohali. The modernisation endeavour is estimated at Rs 10,000 crore. This was conveyed by Jitin Prasada, minister of state for electronics and information technology, while responding to an enquiry by Vikramjit Singh Sahney during the question hour at Rajya Sabha. The govt has sanctioned the Semicon India programme with a comprehensive outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for the advancement of the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country. In this programme, the govt has additionally approved the modernisation of the Semi Conductor Laboratory (SCL), Mohali, the minister stated. Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney had raised the question asking about the govt announcement in February 2024 that a modernisation scheme of Rs 10,000 crore for the Semi Conductor Lab (SCL), Mohali, had been prepared and the govt would select a partner for the same. The question was directed to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the current Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Whilst responding on behalf of Vaishnaw, Jitin Prasada stated the govt had sanctioned the Semicon India programme with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for the development of the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country. Under this programme, the govt additionally approved the modernisation of the Semi Conductor Laboratory (SCL), Mohali. Benefits of having Semiconductor Fab(s) in India The benefits of domestic semiconductor fabrication are manifold. First and foremost, it reduces India’s dependence on imports, mitigating the risks associated with supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions. Moreover, the establishment of fabrication facilities, i.e., fabs, has the potential to create a ripple effect on the economy, generating highly skilled jobs across various domains such as engineering, manufacturing, research and development, and technical support. There are many challenges for Establishing Fabrication Facilities. Few critical ones are mentioned below: (1) High-Risk and Capital-Intensive: The semiconductor industry has high entry barriers. Building a semiconductor fabrication plant (fab) involves significant upfront investment in infrastructure, equipment, and research and development. Moreover, the return on investment is not guaranteed, as it may take several years to recoup the initial capital outlay. Securing funding for such ventures is challenging, particularly for new entrants. (2) Economic Viability and Production Volumes: Semiconductor fabs require massive production volumes to achieve economies of scale and remain economically viable. Meeting global demand becomes crucial, which leads to high production levels and competitive pricing. This poses a major challenge for new fabs entering the market, as they must compete with pre-established industry players. (3) Ecosystem Development and Skill Gaps: Establishing a semiconductor fab requires building an ecosystem that includes supply chain management, infrastructure development, and workforce training. Training a skilled workforce capable of operating and maintaining sophisticated semiconductor equipment is essential but can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. This, in turn, leads to the development of skill gaps within the industry. (4) Quality and Yield: Maintaining consistent quality and yields is crucial in the semiconductor industry. Even minor defects or variations in production processes can result in significant losses. Achieving high yields while adhering to strict quality standards requires continuous monitoring and process optimisation. Failure to meet quality requirements can render a fab economically unviable. (5) Environmental Considerations: Semiconductor fabrication processes involve the use of hazardous chemicals and generate significant amounts of waste. Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, managing waste disposal, and adopting sustainable practices are essential for minimising environmental impact, maintaining public trust, and securing long-term sustainability. Combating these challenges shall require a planned strategic approach and united efforts by the government, technological institutes, and private players to ensure that more semiconductor fabrication facilities can be set up within India without hindrance. Stability of Government is utmost important.

Go cross wind direction to assembly point 2. We will move upwind against the direction of wind. Which word we can use according to safety standard? 1. Avoid going to the laydown area because H2s heavier than air. 2. Avoid going to the low lying area. Which one is correct?

Tessolve, a leading semiconductor engineering solutions provider, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire German chip design firm Dream Chip Technologies in a deal valued up to ₹400 crore. This acquisition strengthens Tessolve’s global footprint and enhances its capabilities in delivering end-to-end, turnkey design solutions for advanced chips, particularly in System on Chip (SoC) applications across the AI, automotive, data center, and industrial sectors. As part of this acquisition, Tessolve will add four new delivery centers in Germany and the Netherlands, including a specialized Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and imaging center of excellence. Srini Chinamilli, Tessolve’s CEO, highlighted that this deal positions Tessolve among the few global design firms with comprehensive capabilities to tackle complex ASIC design projects. Jens Benndorf, CEO of Dream Chip, noted that the combined strengths of Dream Chip’s design IP and Tessolve’s established services will enable fully integrated solutions, from chip architecture to post-silicon testing and supply chain management.
