Quick commerce unicorn Zepto recently secured $665 million in funding and is already in talks to raise another $400 million. Zepto is emerging as a competitor to major e-commerce giants like Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart by having found its niche in the top 10% of the market segment that values time over money. While traditional e-commerce will continue to exist, people who value money over time will surely choose quick commerce platforms over traditional e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, even when it comes to getting the smallest of things delivered. A quick commerce model is profitable and has a high order repeat rate. Its business model is based on charging a premium for products and fast delivery. Quick commerce strategically gathers data on high-frequency products, builds localised warehouses, and enables its riders to deliver at hyper speeds, which again gives it a competitive advantage over traditional e-commerce companies. This reminds me of what Blue Dart did to the American postal services; both continue to function but appeal to different segments of people. For example, if I'm at work and urgently need stationery, I would opt for Zepto despite the higher cost for immediate delivery rather than wait for a discounted delivery the next day. Consistency triumphs over Fairy Tales, yet again! KKR winning IPL 2024 yesterday highlighted quite a few intriguing facts for me. 1. Belief can take you places- The two teams playing this year's final finished 7th and last in the league stage last year. But they believed that they can put that behind and approach a new tournament with a fresh mindset. 2. Aggressive- In the era of batters deciding the fate of matches, they realized that bowlers have an equal say in the match. Their bowling was the most aggressive in the entire tournament. The hunger to achieve more and get to the next level acted as the inner force. 3. No one hero! - Their team did not have one larger than life hero. Instead, they had lesser-known players who came on the fore when it mattered the most. Like spokes in a wheel, it took complete effort from all to make them win. 4. Big match player - There are always those in a group who can hold their nerves in a tight situation better than others. When it is tough, the tough get going. The Rs 24.75 Cr invested in a single player by KKR certainly paid off in the playoffs. 5. Leader/ Coach - Unlike most teams, neither their coach nor their captain ever spoke out of the line. Change in IPL auction rules makes it even more of a spectacle Making the fourth retention so costly (18 crores) has forced most franchises to reassess their IPL auction strategy. The change in the Right-to-Match rules also adds another element of suspense to the proceedings. We are all talking about the IPL retention deadline. In fact, social media is in a tizzy with all sorts of stories floating around. Come October 31, and it will finally be known to the world who are the players retained by the 10 franchises. While a number of names are already out in the open, there is still conjecture over the fate of a number of key individuals. But that’s not the point here. The point is how the IPL Governing Council and the BCCI have successfully made this process far more interesting than it could have been. One such decision I want to highlight is the fourth retention at 18 crores. With this one call, the entire auction dynamic has changed. Had it been the conventional 18, 14, 11, 8 – almost every franchise would have used the 8-crore bracket or whatever the lowest one was. At 18, things are vastly different. All of a sudden, people are being forced to rethink. Should we or should we not? Should we use the Right To Match instead? Is it a risk retaining someone for 18 crores as the fourth option? This is the one decision that has made the auction a level playing field and credit must be given to the IPL GC and the BCCI. There is conjecture over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) retaining Andre Russell. The chances are he might not be retained, because of this 18-crore fourth-retention fee. Paying 18 crores to two players would mean you have spent 30 percent of your entire auction purse. And that’s what makes it challenging for teams. You need to be extremely clear in your thinking if you go for four retentions. No half-measures will work, and that’s what this auction is all about. Mumbai, for example, are clear they want to retain the four core players in Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Some other teams aren’t as clear, and will hence go into the auction with a different mindset. The change in the RTM rule is yet another fantastic call, which has added much to the auction. Some of the new rules have also empowered players to turn free agents and take a bold plunge. If they are confident of their market value, they can indeed go into the auction and test the waters. On the other hand, franchises can release a player if they are confident of getting him back at a value less than what they are paying currently. If this arithmetic goes awry, which will surely happen with some teams, the entire auction strategy could go bust. While, for the longest time, we have asked where the next innovation in the IPL is going to come from, we finally have our answer. It is in the auction, and that’s what has made it far more interesting, adding to the robustness of the IPL brand. Now to all the disclosures 24 hours from now.

The Indian sports sponsorship landscape has witnessed a remarkable growth trajectory over the years, with 2022 and 2023 being particularly notable. According to the GroupM ESP Sporting Nation Report 2024, the industry saw a significant surge in sponsorship spending. In 2022, the total sports sponsorship spending surpassed Rs 14,000 crore, marking a substantial increase from the previous year. This growth was propelled by a 105% rise in on-ground, team, and franchise sponsorship, which collectively amounted to Rs 5,907 crore. The following year, 2023, continued this upward trend with the industry recording a revenue of Rs 15,766 crore, approximately $1.9 billion, which is an 11% increase from 2022. Cricket continued to dominate the sponsorship scene, contributing 87% of the total spending in 2023, which equates to Rs 13,701 crore. This represents a 13% growth from the 2022 figures. However, it wasn't just cricket that contributed to these numbers. Emerging sports also gained traction, accounting for 21% of the total sponsorship share, reaching Rs 1528 crore. The year-on-year growth in sponsorship spending was a robust 24%, largely driven by an increase in franchise fees, contributing nearly Rs 1,000 crore within a single year. These numbers highlight the growing potential of India's sports industry. It's becoming important not only within the country but also as a major contributor to the world of sports. The report suggests that this growth is not only a result of the expanding commercialization but also due to the industry's increasing influence globally. With technological advancements and a packed calendar of local and international events, the industry offers ample opportunities for marketers to leverage sports for brand building and consumer engagement.
