JNPA Scales New Heights with 10.60% Traffic Growth in Q1 Performance for FY 2024-2025 Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India's best-performing port, continues to scale new heights by handling 1,688,145 TEUs of containers from April 2024 to June 2024. This represents a growth of 10.60%, compared to 1,526,284 TEUs of containers in the corresponding period in the previous financial year 2023-2024. Appreciating the substantial growth in the first quarter of this fiscal year, Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairman, JNPA, stated, "We are delighted to share that JNPA has continued its growth trajectory with significant increase in handling TEUs. This quarterly performance is a testament to JNPA's efforts to reduce logistics costs and time by providing efficiency in EXIM and ease of doing business. I must say that this quarter has been very fruitful for JN Port as we also received the cabinet's approval for the mega port project of Vadhvan, which is going to be a game changer for the Indian Maritime sector.” "This project is a catalyst for strengthening economies of scale and transcending the conventional way of port operations in India. We also completed our 35 glorious years of establishment and have been thriving ever since," he further added. JNPA handled 567,392 TEUs of containers in June 2024, representing an increase of 19.11%, respectively, compared to the traffic in June 2023 which was 476,350 TEUs of container. There is also a remarkable increase in the rakes share. In June 2024 containers handled through rakes are 86333 TEUs an increase of 17.13% compared to 73707 TEUs in June 2023. Ensuring Power Security Amid Record Heatwave: The Role of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor As India battles unprecedented temperatures, with some northern states recording highs of 50 degrees Celsius, the demand for power has surged to record levels. In response, the Indian Railways has stepped up its efforts, transporting 9.3% more coal in May 2024 compared to May 2023. This remarkable feat has been significantly bolstered by the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), which has played a crucial role in expediting coal movement to thermal power plants. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC): An Overview The EDFC is a vital infrastructure project aimed at creating a high-capacity, high-speed freight corridor to streamline the movement of goods across the eastern part of India. Spanning from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni in West Bengal, the EDFC spans over 1,800 kilometers and connects key industrial regions with major ports. This corridor is designed to decongest the existing rail network, reduce transit times, and increase the efficiency of freight transport. Benefits of the EDFC: Increased Capacity and Efficiency: The EDFC significantly increases the capacity for freight movement, reducing congestion on traditional rail lines and enabling faster delivery times. Enhanced Reliability: With dedicated tracks for freight, the EDFC ensures more reliable and predictable transport schedules, crucial for industries reliant on timely deliveries. Economic Boost: By facilitating smoother and faster transport of goods, the EDFC supports economic growth, particularly in the industrial and manufacturing sectors. Overall, freight loading in May increased by 8.4% to 139.16 MT compared to 128.3 MT in April, leading to a sequential rise in freight revenue by 8.2%, amounting to Rs 15,230.9 crore. Owing to their unique fleet structure, trade patterns and operating environment, bulk carriers require a different approach to handling decarbonization compared to most other ship types. Maximizing energy efficiency, combined with the use of biofuel and potentially on-board carbon capture and storage, seems to be the most promising strategy in the short to medium term, while working towards a faster adoption of low-carbon fuels for newbuilds in the longer future. The decarbonization options for bulk carriers differ from those for other ship types due to the cost structure, world fleet composition and trading patterns of this segment. Therefore, the most promising choices for existing vessels and newbuilds in the near future are energy efficiency enhancements, both operational and technical, while working towards a faster adoption of low-carbon fuels for new buildings in the longer term. Alternative fuels are slowly picking up and moving in the right direction. According to Clarkson Research, 2024 had a record orderbook since 2007 and 50% of all tonnage in the orderbooks is capable of running on green marine fuels. It is exciting to see the maritime sector’s energy transition move forward.
