A copywriter, creative director and digital marketer walk into an onboarding session of a fintech scale-up. The CMO welcomes everyone and after the introductions kicks off the agenda: 1. Company and solution overview 2. GTM strategy 3. ICP and positioning Two minutes in, the new team members start asking about ICP. Skip, skip, and the focus immediately goes to 👇 the ICP and positioning part of the agenda where we spend most of the time. This starts as a joke. But it’s a true story, and the course of the onboarding session is a testament to me that these folks are real pros. I could be sad that they've ruined my onboarding agenda. But I feel quite the opposite way. I’m stoked that we have a new force on board who get the importance of the ICP and positioning and started contributing to our ongoing focus on this on their very first session. There have been many occasions where I have been there- commenting on LinkedIn posts and downloading those templates to use them sometime. The truth? They rarely work as promised. After years of stalking Ankit Vora on LinkedIn - I finally met the man who writes for the top names in B2B SaaS - including Hubspot, Zapier, Semrush and Buffer. Ankit is now charging up to $3000 per blog post - but this wasn't always the case. Starting his career in 2015 as a student who just wanted to be able to pay his own rent and become independent from his parents, Ankit was only getting $5 per article. How did he go from freelancing for peanuts on Fiverr and Upwork, to working for top SaaS brands, while being an unknown young guy from Mumbai? Sprinkle Thought Leadership & Original research on top for original ADDED VALUE Companies don't pay thousands for dumpster diving into the first page on Google. To command really high rates - you need to provide original content, that creates added value.  There are a few ways to do it: by either interviewing experts to provide orginal quotes, and adding a thought-leadership component to the writing ,or doing original research based on e.g. first party data. The latter approach is naturally sometimes really hard to execute - but if you create a report based on data analysis, you can fetch the highest rates. 2. Years of Experience, first-hand experience + topical expertise Experience and expertise in the field you're writing about adds value to your writing. If you have a degree in a specific field, e.g. law, biology or medicine, or have a hobby you're really passionate about - chess, running, rock climbing - you can command much higher rates by niching down and tapping into your first-hand experience and expertise. 3. Think Like a Marketer, NOT a writer! To command high rates, you can't think like a writer. You need to think like a marketer - write with the goal of achieving conversions and proving ROI. Your content needs to sell. Always think how you can contextually embed the product in the context of each keyword, and how the whole piece of writing contributes to gradually building trust and brand affinity, and convincing the reader to buy.  4. Act like a PRO - show impeccable Work Ethic! Apart from the writing itself, having a good relationship with your clients and always appearing as reliable and professional person is crucial for commanding high rates. 5. Create Detailed Outlines before writing a single line Don't rely on client briefs which may often be sketchy, rushed or incomplete. Create detailed outlines BEFORE writing a single line of content - to structure your thoughts. You should know exactly what you're going to write and how you'll structure your piece. Product Marketing ≠ Marketing. Many B2B team members struggle to articulate the difference. In a nutshell, ✅ 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 focuses on creating brand awareness and capturing demand. It creates demand for the category (problem-aware), builds awareness of the product (solution-aware), and then captures that demand (conversion). ✅ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 focuses on supporting the product across the buyer journey. It decides how to position the product in the market. Then, it crafts a strategy to get it into the right hands (go-to-market). Finally, it ensures customers adopt the product and don't churn through effective launches, messaging, and content. ▶️ Product Marketing and Marketing work in close tandem to get acquisition results. PMMs provide the target segments, messaging angles, and GTM strategy for marketing to infuse into their campaigns. ▶️ Moreover, Product Marketers work much closer with product teams and customer-facing teams to translate what's been built into words the target audience can relate with. In return, they provide insights and feedback on the product, segments, and future roadmap. Marketing, on the other hand, aligns a lot more with sales to discuss pipeline and lead quality. Some other thoughts: [1] 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 Back when I was working for a SaaS recruitment platform, I wasn't just doodling messaging sheets. I had to write the copy for the landing pages, run paid ads, and schedule email blasts with Mailchimp. When the team grew to a certain size, I moved to orchestration. That early practical exposure comes in handy later on when you have to manage or mentor such teams with specific, tactical direction. [2] 𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗠𝗠𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 There are a couple of skills product marketing managers should borrow from their marketing counterparts: copywriting and content strategy. If you can't develop a culture of high-quality writing in the company, it'll be hard to influence anyone with your value propositions. Writing copy requires much practice. [3] 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹. Each team has its own set of secondary metrics they measure. For example, The PM cares about conversion rates, sessions on-site, and social media traffic. Similarly, the Product Marketer loves to assess sales velocity, win rates, and adoption rates. But ultimately, they both care about high-priority metrics like MQLs and net new revenue. That binds them together towards one strategic vector. -- What are other differences you know about?

We talk about how amazing B2C brands have become a common noun/verb of their own. You Uber to work, Xerox a page, Google information or Photoshop something. Heck! You go into rural or even semi-urban North India, and you will see people asking the local shopkeeper for "Colgate." One B2B brand I am truly amazed by in this regard (and frustrated with!) is the good ol' Calendly. Look, Calendly is great. I was one of the early adopters almost a decade back and it soon became the classic "viral loop" dream for marketers with its brilliant "Powered by Calendly" growth hack (along with Dropbox). They literally had PLG going at scale before buzzwords like PLG and "growth hacking" were even coined. Since then, I have been a part of multiple GTM orgs where I got a chance to solve for growth at scale. The humble meeting scheduler is an essential component of any classic B2B SaaS GTM org. And invariably, sales reps would just use Calendly, though the ops team would have spent significant time and energy customizing & integrating the shiny new meeting booker with the sales process plus CRM. And it's not just a couple of rogue reps doing it - it's EVERYONE. Calendly is truly underrated in the world of brands. They probably had the first-mover advantage and a great product that solved a real problem. And today, they are a common noun in the world of sales. These days, when I want to meet someone, I just send them my Hubspot Meeting link and ask them to choose a time slot from my Calendly. Can you think of any B2B brands that have become a common noun or verb?

Marketing funnel = clear answers to 3 questions - How will you get high-quality traffic every day? - How will your users understand why your product is awesome? - How will you nudge more customers to buy on the spot? It will take you 10 minutes to answer them. Do it already.

Email nurturing is grossly underused With it you can understand - what your product is used for - why users aren't converting - how to stand out from competitors - what your audience care about - how to communicate your value Nurturing shouldn't always be a one sided communication where you try moving users down the buying process It can also be a way to get their input on the product that's built for them - making sure they get the most value from it Converse. Don't just announce.

What is the point of running ads, writing blogs, posting on LinkedIn, partnerships …. when conversions are actually not happening. I asked this question atleast 20 times in the last 4 years. Here’s the thing i realized:  The channels might not align with the GTM funnel. Here is how channels are typically aligned with different stages of funnel... Step 1: Top of Funnel (TOFU) It’s about awareness—shouting, “Hey, we exist!” Best channels: LinkedIn Ads, SEO blogs, webinars, Newsletters, Influencers Step 2: Middle of Funnel (MOFU) MOFU is the “getting-to-know-you” phase. Buyers are exploring. Best channels: Email drip campaigns, LinkedIn retargeting ads, case studies. Step 3: Bottom of Funnel (BOFU) BOFU is where the discussions happen on commercial levels. It’s decision time. Best channels: Personalized LinkedIn messages, free trials, ABM campaigns, exclusive webinars. Too many SaaS landing pages fail to attract and convert prospects ❌ Instead of driving conversions, they distract visitors with unnecessary information. It’s not only about getting the structure right and adding some social proof. Many landing pages fail because they don’t resonate with the real pain points of their audience. ✅ Do qualitative research on your existing customers. ✅ Understand their pain points and address them. ✅ Show how your product can solve them. Many SaaS buyers have never purchased a product like yours before, so it’s your job to explain how product features benefit their business.
