It's been nearly half a decade since I started understanding and tracking #ESG and #sustainability across global #corporations (thanks to Maneesh Sagar and RS Metrics) only to realize #ESG and #sustainability are widely misunderstood. As I dived further academically, I realized that this misunderstanding was quite widespread, not just among consumers but also among corporations who were trying to practice it, and this was at the core and the way it was #marketed, not just the #products and #services but also the core theme of #green Picking up one conversation with some of the greats in the #industry and taking the first thing that affects the #consumer, I realized #greenmarketing and #greenwashing are two terms that often get tangled in discussions about #corporate #responsibility and #environmental #sustainability. And that led to the research on how #greenmarketing can sometimes serve as a disguise for #greenwashing or as a lot of us call it, "The Thin Green Line." In recent years, as #consumer awareness about #environmental #issues has soared, #businesses have increasingly turned to #greenmarketing to showcase their efforts in #sustainability. While green marketing is meant to highlight genuine #ecofriendly initiatives, it sometimes slips into the murkier #waters of #greenwashing. Haven happened multiple times; you begin to realise that the green sheen is only surface-deep, masking practices that are not truly sustainable. While #greenmarketing taps into the growing consumer preference for environmentally responsible products, companies have used green-themed #packaging, #ecofriendly #product claims, and sustainability-oriented #advertising to appeal to this demographic and with an idea to build #brand #loyalty and a reputation as a #responsible business. But slowly and steadily, no one realizes how this line is often crossed (knowingly and unknowingly), and they slip into #Greenwashing, ultimately misleading the #customer. Often found around tactics, green marketing is often found around marketing and advertising that have ➡ Exaggerated Claims: Products are advertised as ‘green’ based on a thin veneer of sustainable practices, often emphasizing minor or irrelevant attributes while ignoring more significant environmental impacts. ➡ Lack of Proof: Companies may claim environmental benefits without providing #transparency or #evidence to support these claims. ➡ Misleading Imagery and Language: Using nature-inspired #images and terms like ‘natural’, ‘eco’, and ‘green’ can suggest environmental benefits where none exist. While there could be endless thro's and fro's around this, here is a small glimpse of our #research paper that highlights and explains where this thin line is and where #corporations have gone wrong in crossing it with a focus on #food #industry. In an exclusive interview with ETEducation, Prof. Prafulla AGNIHOTRI, Director of IIM Sirmaur, shared valuable insights on the future of management education in India. "I couldn’t have had a better mentor and friend to guide me through the process. Arvind was super thorough, patient and accommodating. Through our brainstorming sessions, Arvind emphasized the importance of focusing on what I wanted from my MBA program rather than getting distracted by external noise. This perspective on how well my goals can be met by the program, helped me prioritize programs based on a structured approach. When I was preparing for interviews, I needed structure amidst the chaos, and that’s precisely where Arvind helped. Through mock interview sessions, he coached me on how to structure my answers effectively, ensuring they were impactful and delivered the necessary punch. In short, Arvind’s advice proved invaluable in eventually securing admission to IESE and Oxford Saïd MBA programs." These were Jegyasa's kind words on working with me/ admitStreet. When Jegyasa reached out to me, her motivation for an MBA and career goals post-MBA (strategy consulting) were clear. She needed guidance on which B-schools to prioritize, and subsequently preparations for her IESE and Oxford Saïd MBA interviews. To start with, we evaluated the top MBA programs across dimensions including consulting career opportunities, alumni network, profile-fitment, her geographic preferences, etc. This gave us an objective view of which programs to prioritize and why. Typically, this is one of the first personalized steps I work with candidates on, as it structures their thought process and directly impacts the outcome. Subsequently, for our mock interview sessions, we identified high-impact anecdotes from Jegyasa's professional and personal experiences. Given there were a bunch of anecdotes, it was important to prioritize and structure effectively. For each mock session, I could see her prepare in advance by adding pointers in our school-specific 'MBA Interview Questions' document. After each mock, she improved along my feedback dimensions across content, structure and delivery. Our final mock was excellent, and gave her (and me) the confidence about her actual interviews! I'm glad that Jegyasa received her well-deserved admits from IESE Business School and Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. I wish her the best in her journey at IESE and going forward!
