The fascinating battle in the Indian OTT market continues to intensify! JioCinema's recent launch of their Rs 29 JioCinema Premium plan is a fascinating development. This is an aggressively disruptive pricing strategy, and will significantly impact the players in the industry. Let's delve into the "how" and "why" behind this disruptive move. The How: - India boasts a significant user base of 800 million internet users (thanks to Jio again), and for the majority of users, affordability is key. The new plan makes content more affordable and accessible, creating a new segment of paying users for the entire industry. - While currently JioCinema does not have an exhaustive library of content, their plan is to heavily invest in creating high-quality regional content, catering to our country's diverse linguistic audience. - A recent survey revealed that 42% of Indian subscribers juggle between at least two OTT subscriptions. This could encourage users to juggle and experiment with multiple platforms, sort of cannibalizing the existing user base of other players. The Why: - The Indian OTT market is experiencing explosive growth, and JioCinema wants to capture a significant share. - Indian audiences are known to be price-sensitive and this strategy reflects a deep understanding of this user preference. - The Indian OTT market has traditionally been dominated by global players. This pricing strategy disrupts the established order, forcing existing domestic players to adapt and protect the Indian turf. Last week, Razorpay launched Razorpay Buyer Protection, which allow consumers to get a third party to guarantee on-time delivery, the option to return the item purchased. In India, where cash-on-delivery (COD) still makes up a large portion of transactions, Razorpay Buyer Protection is free for prepaid orders, incentivizing customers to move away from COD and complete transactions upfront. This reduces fraud, lowers operational risks, and helps merchants improve their cash flow. Co-founded in 2014 by Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar, Razorpay reached a 7.5 billion USD valuation in 2021. While Razorpay Buyer Protection is specific to the Indian market, I have a feeling this won’t be the last time we see payment providers adding insurance as an upsell embedded in the payment flow. As a result, I wouldn’t be surprised if global players like Stripe or Adyen start offering something similar soon. This story was initially published in this week’s issue of Global Fintech Insider. Yesterday, I had an insightful conversation with a VP of Customer Success from a well-known SaaS company based in Bangalore. We were discussing strategies around upsell and cross-sell, and she shared a fantastic example of the power of subtle nudges. Her team noticed one of their long-standing customers was steadily increasing their use of automation features—a strong indicator that they might benefit from more advanced capabilities. But rather than pushing an upsell directly, her CSM decided to take a softer approach. During a regular check-in, the CSM casually shared a success story about a similar customer who had upgraded and saw a significant boost in productivity. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡, 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐩. The CSM even highlighted a few specific premium features that would align with the customer's current growth phase, like advanced analytics and additional integrations. This was all done in a way that showed they understood the customer’s journey and were there to support it. The result? Within a quarter, the customer upgraded, excited by the potential impact on their operations. They even went on to explore cross-sell options in other areas.
