"Standardization" in manufacturing, often viewed peripherally is a criticality, more so in terms of electronics. It is a pivotal issue for development, acceptance of products and associated scales of production. The main difference between the international and national standards is perhaps in the scope, with the former looking at consistency and the latter being need specific. A staggering 90% of this industry is concentrated in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, with the remaining 10% spread across Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The story of Sivakasi's firecracker industry is fascinating. It began in the early 20th century, primarily as a cottage industry and has since grown into a major economic force. The town is now home to over 1,000 firecracker manufacturing units, employing thousands of people. This town boasts 30% of the production of the printing industry of India, along with 70% of the matchstick industry and 90% of firecrackers. However, despite its economic significance, the industry faces several challenges like environmental pollution, child labor, etc., which are pressing issues that need urgent attention. It's time for the industry to step up and take responsibility for its impact on society and the environment. BSNL’s Direct-to-Device Technology: A Revolutionary Leap Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in partnership with global satellite communications leader Viasat, has taken a bold step towards revolutionizing mobile connectivity in India. Their recent trials of Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology showcase a forward-thinking approach that could potentially outshine private telecom giants like Reliance Jio and Airtel. However, as this state-run entity inches closer to transforming the telecom landscape, a critical question emerges: will the government back BSNL’s innovation, or will it favor its private counterparts? BSNL’s D2D technology is designed to provide seamless and reliable connectivity by allowing smartphones, smartwatches, and even cars to communicate directly with satellites. Unlike traditional mobile networks that rely on terrestrial infrastructure such as towers and cables, D2D technology uses satellite connections, ensuring that users remain connected even in remote or underserved regions. This advancement is crucial for a vast country like India, where many rural and isolated areas still suffer from unreliable network coverage. The technology is compatible with Android and iOS devices, enhancing its appeal for widespread adoption. Whether it’s making phone calls, sending messages, or accessing data services, BSNL’s new system offers a robust solution, especially during network outages or natural disasters when terrestrial networks typically fail. BSNL and Viasat’s trials have already demonstrated the power of this innovation. Using Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity, the companies successfully conducted two-way messaging and SOS messaging on a commercial Android smartphone. They even managed to make a phone call via a satellite stationed 36,000 km away. This BSNL ahead in the race for bridging the digital divide in India and ensuring even the most remote regions have access to connectivity. BSNL’s Direct-to-Device service could pose a real challenge to telecom heavyweights like Reliance Jio and Airtel. For years, these private entities have dominated the market, often benefiting from favorable regulatory environments and massive private investment. BSNL’s latest innovation has the potential to disrupt this dominance by offering coverage and reliability that is difficult to match using traditional terrestrial networks alone. While BSNL has taken a technological leap forward, its success largely depends on government support. The telecom sector in India is notoriously competitive, and government policies have often favored private players, ensuring they maintain market dominance. Supporting BSNL’s D2D technology would mean investing in infrastructure, expanding its satellite capabilities, and giving it the financial flexibility to scale its operations. The benefits would be immense—an India where rural and remote areas enjoy the same connectivity as urban centers, leading to economic growth and social development.

I see striking parallels between India's GCC growth trajectory and the transformation our industry underwent in the early 2000s. When we first expanded our networks into smaller cities, we faced scepticism. Today, some of our most innovative solutions come from these regions. The projected 25-30% growth in GCC demand in these cities is a validation of the distributed innovation model telecom industry leaders have long advocated for. The integration of AI capabilities in 70% of GCCs by 2026 is particularly significant along with the transformation of GCCs into Global Innovation Centers (GICs). However, the challenges lie in the infrastructure gaps in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. India's GCC sector isn't just competing on cost, it's competing on innovation capability. The projected growth to US$100 billion by 2030 is achievable, but the real measure of success will be the intellectual property and innovations these centres generate.
