India’s SaaS market is set to double and reach a massive $50 Bn of ARR by 2030 – but serial entrepreneur Saket Dandotia sees a gap in the bustling market 💡👇 His belief stems from a very Indian problem. For instance, India mints a whopping 1.5 Mn engineers each year on average. When a Tech Giant Stumbles on Facts: The Meta Misinformation Problem Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently made a glaring error by misreporting the results of India's Lok Sabha elections, claiming the NDA lost when they had actually secured a significant victory. For a platform with nearly 3 billion active users globally, including over 400 million users in India, this is more than just a factual error. It’s a trust issue. In an age where 70% of people globally rely on social media for news, such inaccuracies have far-reaching consequences. Platforms like Facebook claim to use sophisticated AI and data systems, yet incidents like this question the effectiveness of their $5 billion annual investment in content moderation and technology. This raises key concerns: 1) 2.9 billion monthly active users: How many rely on this platform for reliable information, only to be misled? 2) 87% of misinformation spread is political—when a tech giant gets it wrong, it amplifies the problem exponentially. 3) India is Facebook’s largest market—shouldn’t accuracy in this region be an uncompromised priority? The issue isn’t just about this one mistake, it’s a systemic problem of accountability. India has earned the unfortunate title of ‘snakebite capital of the world’, accounting for roughly half of global snakebite deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified snakebites as a “neglected tropical disease”. While gathering data is crucial to addressing any man-animal conflict, accurate figures on the scale of India’s snakebite crisis have been elusive. This is why leading herpetologists, who have tracked this issue for decades, were thrilled when Karnataka became India’s first state to make snakebites a ‘notifiable disease’ in February 2024. This policy requires all snakebites, whether treated in government or private hospitals, to be reported. Though it might seem a minor change, renowned herpetologist Gerry Martin, based near Rathnapuri village in Hunsur taluk, called it “a very, very big thing”. The true magnitude of India’s snakebite crisis, and the gap between official figures and reality, came to light a few years ago. An ambitious study, part of the broader Million Death Study on premature mortality in India, was conducted by a collaborative group of Indian and international researchers. Their landmark 2011 paper estimated 45,900 annual snakebite deaths in India. A follow-up study in 2020 painted an even grimmer picture, estimating 1.2 million snakebite deaths in India between 2000 and 2019. Despite these staggering numbers, herpetologists and community health researchers believe the actual death toll could be even higher. Drawing on the critical data from the Million Death Study, Sumanth Bindumadhav, Director of Wildlife at Humane Society International, lobbied officials at Karnataka’s Department of Health and Family Welfare. His goal was to implement crucial measures to address the snakebite crisis, ultimately leading to Karnataka declaring snakebites a ‘notifiable disease’. If Indian cities are to get some relief from traffic congestion and overcrowding in public transport, drastic steps are needed to add capacity through involvement of private players in building and operating transport solutions with dedicated right of way. Public transport never could scale sufficiently and profitably. Time to rethink how mass transit is operated. Of course technologically better solutions based on automated platooning and roads is possible with a much more open system architecture. But, not feasible to work with bureaucratic business models or public enterprises like Indian Railways. Innovation is the need of the hour as it looks really shameful considering all the claims of great innovations from India and IITs. Needless to say, if government of India was operating Mumbai and Bengaluru airport to this day, instead of private players like Adani, GVK, GMR and Prem Watsa, we would have seen people falling off of airplanes as well and not just trains.😖😖😖
