Here is a QUESTION THAT HAS BEEN HAUNTING ME FOR LONG. Please share your thoughts in the comments. My sojourn into full-time teaching (along with my work!) started in 2009 when one of the Professors, Dr K Chandrasekaran (a rare academic with a mind for product design!), requested I take a course on CREATIVE DESIGN and later got extended to EMBEDDED SYSTEMS and ELECTRONIC PACKAGING (this course encouraged me to write a book on the same topic. I was taking these courses for about five years before my job made me shift to Vizag. However, I have been teaching various forms focusing on basic System Design, Engineering, electronic manufacturing and EVs (last 5 years). During this duration, I saw many types of courses, starting from a textbook-based manufacturing course to ML/AI. But what surprised me was most of these courses were a collection of topics and applicability in practice is a big issue. I have been searching for a course "how to design hardware for an ML engine in practice. My search often led to a dead end. Most of these courses are theoretical and don't deal with "how and why". Mostly dealing with "What" only. None of these so-called courses ever teach you the basics so that application becomes easy. Are you facing a similar situation? Let me know in the comments. Retail is tough - and endlessly fascinating! A colleague recently shared something that truly resonated: “It’s a complex problem. Every retail store has its own unique story and nuance; no two are the same” When we began our journey with retail stores at Tata 1mg, we thought we had it all figured out—leveraging local online demand patterns to shape store assortments, relying on our expertise in supply chain excellence to build seamless operations, and so much more. But as we delved deeper, we realized that the real world of RETAIL is far more intricate, unpredictable, and full of lessons we never saw coming. Everything we thought we knew broke down in unimaginable ways when put to the test across tens of stores—soon to scale into hundreds and thousands. A retail facility carries all the challenges of a supply chain node, with the added complexity of directly serving customers. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had a rough day—be it a fight at home, the stress of meeting revenue targets, or the pressure of my visit to the store. When a customer walks in, you put it all aside, smile, and serve - that’s the Heart of Retail. I am constantly amazed by the depth of insight our retail staff brings to the table. They innately understand demand patterns, seasonality, and customer behavior better than most data guys. They are a crucial part of cracking this complex puzzle, with ideas shaped by years of hands-on experience, deep customer connections, and an incredible knack for making things work seamlessly in the dynamic, confined space where customers get served. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆! 😊   It’s a tale of 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 (𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼!) 𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙬 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩. Read on and take your own “to be or not to be” clues.  𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 A few days back, my home water filter started acting up. So, I decided to explore new options and stumbled upon Livpure Smart. Their brand promise sounded tempting: ₹0 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵, 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵 – all at affordable plans. I decided to go for it.  But my primary concern was installation speed. With my existing filter barely working, 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘺. Here’s how the story unfolded: 𝟭. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 When I called their sales number, I told the agent I had already researched their plans. My only question: 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚?   He checked my address and assured me: - Delivery today ✅   - Installation tomorrow ✅  To back it up, he confidently mentioned their office is in Gurgaon, my city, so it would all be done promptly. Trusting this, I made the payment. 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮: It took additional 𝟮 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, countless calls, and negotiating with installers to get the job done. 𝟮. 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 Promise ₹𝟬 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩. But the installer 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆, refusing to proceed otherwise.  When I tried calling customer care, I discovered another irony:   Their "𝟮𝟰/𝟳 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁" 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 only operates 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟭𝟬 𝗔𝗠–𝟳 𝗣𝗠 𝗜𝗦𝗧. Since it was off-hours, I begrudgingly paid the installer to get drinking water at home. 𝟯. 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 Livpure operates in an essential category—𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿. But their process showed 𝙯𝙚𝙧𝙤 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙮 for customers' needs.  From sales to support, no one seemed to understand the urgency of having drinking water at home. Responses like “𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 24–48 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴” 𝘰𝘳 “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵” felt robotic & detached. 𝟰. 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 Livpure’s operations showed a lack of planning for 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲. Their installers are local contractors who:   - Don’t share the brand’s values or commitments. - Are motivated purely by money (e.g., charging me despite their "free installation" promise). 𝟱. 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 Livpure did one thing 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹—they chose Sachin Tendulkar 𝘗𝘢𝘢𝘫𝘪 as their brand ambassador. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘪𝘯?   - Sachin is an icon of trust, loved by millions.   - His personal values align with the brand’s mission: clean drinking water at affordable costs. 𝗕𝘂𝘁… A great ambassador can only do so much. I trust Sachin Tendulkar for life but not the brand Livpure Smart anymore :(

Abhiraj Singh Bhal, dropped a couple of interesting insights during Z47's "the consumer unicorn blueprint" chat a day before: 1/ While marketplaces can offer you distribution, you don't end up owning the consumer. and till the time you don't own your consumer, you won't be able to create businesses with healthy margins. Period. Any brand with a Q-commerce only or market place+Q commerce only strategy will find it increasingly difficult to create sound businesses. He offers a way out but with a caveat: 2/ To create a fundamentally sound business, with good margins- one has to go the d2c way. He talked about the challenges of creating his own D2C brand "native" in the water purifier and allied category. The biggest challenge he talked about is why should an end consumer trust you and buy directly from you? When he has the option to buy from an Amazon or a Flipkart with easy returns and complete trust in the process if anything goes wrong? That he says is the biggest roadblock which makes it 100X difficult to scale as a D2C brand. But that's also the only way to create a profitable business. Everytime i hear such inputs from industry veterans, it just reaffirms the mission we are onto at Simpl. Our 1-tap checkout is not about giving credit but rather about bridging that missing trust in a d2c brand dot com. It's about giving that feeling of safety while purchasing anything online, the same nostalgic "bharosa" feeling we have from buying from our neighborhood khata store :)

Happy Product Review - #BluSmart BluSmart is truly delivering a distinctive experience in the tough and competitive transportation network / cab aggregator industry. I had an airport drop in Bangalore recently. Here are some highlights. This is of course unpaid- just appreciating good execution and hoping other entrepreneurs can find it useful. - Not just Referred, but Strongly PUSHED by another customer to use. Don't rely on customer referrals, aim for customer PUSH. A 10% increase in customer push will likely have a 10X impact on multiple business metrics- NPS (happy customers), market share (customers stealing other customers from competition for you), CAC (~0 acquisition cost), CLTV (if he's so happy he's likely repeating), and of course revenue growth. - Electric Vehicle- decarbonization mission, plus EVs tend to be quieter. - Very polite and friendly driver. He was happy because he gets a salary and is not chasing crazy incentives like Uber and Ola. I'm tagging the cab driver- Ferros Issac - wonderful job, keep it up. Lovely talking to you! - Arrived 20 minutes before pickup. No "pickup anxiety". - I ended up paying Rs. 400 less than Uber/Ola prices, probably a first time trial incentive. I would pay Rs. 100-200 extra next time. - Safe and lane driving- mostly under 80. Again, he told me clearly that he is chasing customer happiness not maximizing "# of rides" targets. This is a good example of "show me the incentives and I'll show you the behavior". Also a distinctive, standout strategy executed well. Good job Punit K Goyal and team..! Keep it up. Some quick suggestions: - Asking people to load money in advance in the wallet in your FTUE isn't a great idea. - A water bottle in the cab will help in the summers - Scale/expand with caution, without diluting the core user experience.
