In my personal experience while interacting as an officer with Narendra Modi, I found in him a receptive, perceptive and decisive leader who took some path breaking decisions and the initiative to break bureaucratic silos. Quite inexplicably, however, something snapped after initial few years. The headline is incorrect. However, individual actions against the corrupt are fine but haven't impacted corruption. The issue is creating a system where corruption becomes extremely difficult if not impossible. It can be done today as it has been in some segments of governance through use of technology. Transparency through use of technology can tackle corruption substantially. However, it has to begin from the top. The PMO should digitize files and insist on making processes transparent. Except national security issues, all else should be put in public domain. I discuss this and many other issues relating to governance in this free-wheeling chat.

Narendra Modi is so fond of technology. Then, why doesn't he get the files in the PMO digitized? Why doesn't the PMO receive only digital files from Ministries? This will cut down the delays in decision making as I witnessed in the Coal Ministry. It can be done. It should be done in the interest of improving governance but charity has to begin at home. Dials on political macro 1. Freebie culture (Revadi) has a momentum of its own. In Tamilnadu - it began in 1967, and sustained. 2. First time since 1990- we have two divergent policy offerings. Consensus on economic policies has broken. 3….the offer of opposition is an aggressive social safety net. 4…what will be the policy direction of the future is revealed, not in what incumbent defends but in - what opposition popularly suggests. 5. Constituencies of market, rich and of incumbent is worse off in the set up that the alternate policy creates. 6….the camp of people who have not participated in the growth is better off in such a setup. All of it and more in Hindi with Neeraj Vajpayee!

The first dialogue that came to mind - Chowkidar hi Chor hai ! Interesting development and it's still developing story. The greater concern is if this is actually true, how deep our systems are rotted. If regulators are hand in glove with fishy promoters (Adani or anyone), it shakes the fundamental basis of the market and that is "TRUST". How can we believe that it is just limited to Adani. What if they have done similar activities with other companies? The report does mention about Blackstone and REITs. I know many can take this as an insignificant event, but it has grave consequences. If you are an FII/FPI, will you trust the market with such regulator. Or what about the retail investors who have so much (over)confidence in stock market these days. If this has no substance, SEBI must come forward aggressively and defend. And if it is slightly true, strictest action must be taken against the wrong doers.

Indo-USA Relationship upswing : This leaves India as a notable exception in Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi looks set to nurture a strengthened relationship with Trump while expanding India’s strategic opportunities. India's decision to stay out of RCEP was wise, sparing us from deeper trade deficits like those seen in ASEAN. While we figure out how to address our growing dependence on Chinese imports to truly achieve self-reliance ; we should also focus on formulating an appropriate industrial policy.

BJP's wings have been clipped though it has been given mandate to form the government; but it needs its alliance partners' help to do that. Condemnation is easy and that is what many indulge in. The attempt should be to look at solutions by studying the ground reality that goes beyond purely academic indulgence. What India needs today is not condemnation and criticism but workable solutions. If those that have been in positions to "change" but couldn't or didn't, should not indulge in sweeping criticism. In this interaction with Shutapa Paul, I comment on various aspects of bureaucratic functioning, how it has evolved and how it should and can evolve. The observations are based on personal experience.
