Women empowerment opportunities in automotive sector! MG Motor India (MGMI) was launched in 2017 at Halol, Gujarat, India, a 100-year-old brand (1924-2024) had opened numerous diversification opportunities for women empowerment. Significantly, the company had achieved a workforce gender diversity of 37%, which was the highest in auto industry, while it planned for reaching 50% diversity. Historically, women had been severely marginalised in the auto sector and restricted to working in office and scarcely in leadership positions. Meanwhile, MGMI in sync with its gender diversity commitment introduced the 'Drive Her Back' initiative in 2019 which aimed to reinforce diversity and inclusion for creating an equitable automotive workplace across verticals. Besides, this revival campaign also enriched the talent pipeline. The government of India has rolled out many schemes for startups & manufacturers of electric vehicles, batteries & components. However, the eligibility criteria / process of disbursement / committee deciding on grant / loan disbursements makes it difficult for entrepreneurs to avail of such schemes / grants / loans. There are around 400 electric vehicle manufacturers & EV ecosystem startups in India, but most of them are denied even the INR 50 lakhs ($60,000) startup loan. This is resulting in funds allocated but not disbursed situation even for the PLI EV manufacturing scheme. In contrast, the Chinese government has disbursed over 200 billion RMB ($29 billion) of loans / subsidies and tax breaks to EV & battery manufacturers, making China the global leader in the automobile industry. Here’s an insightful article by Michael Dunne on how entrepreneurs are funded billions of dollars by the Chinese government… “Across China, you can find scores of startups like National Gold. They are run by street smart, hard working people. Some, like NIO, Xpeng and Li Auto, are much more advanced than others. But they all follow a standard playbook for operating in the arena called state capitalism. 1. Secure a manufacturing license, with help from a government sponsor. 2. Get a billion-dollar loan. Build a plant. Buy some Kukas. 3. Get another billion. Build a second plant. Whenever possible, build plants in a few different provinces. That’s good risk diversification. In the West, we (usually) try to spec the plant to market demand. In the PRC, you secure the hard-to-get license and build the plant. The bigger the better. Then you hustle like crazy to sell your cars. Sell them to anyone. Anywhere. Result: China today has enough capacity to supply half of annual global demand for cars - some 40 million a year. Chinese consumers buy about 25 million, leaving 15 million units of extra capacity. Now, if all that excess capacity stayed at home, inside China, no one would give a hoot. But it’s not staying home. Chinese automakers are on a global offensive, exporting cars and trucks – to more than 100 markets worldwide. In my view critical strategy for accelerating the adoption of electric mobility is Retrofitting existing diesel buses and heavy, commercial vehicles (SCVs) (3w and trucks) with electric powertrains can significantly reduce urban and rural air and noise pollution while leveraging the existing fleet. However, several key points need to be addressed for this to be a viable and scalable solution: Retrofitting Strategy: 1. Support with Government Policy and Guidelines: - The Ministry of Heavy Industries and associated bodies need to establish clear, supportive guidelines for retrofitting existing ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles. - Extending the operational life of retrofitted vehicles by at least five years (beyond the typical 15-year cap) is essential to make this investment worthwhile for fleet operators. 2. Cost and Financial Viability: - Retrofitting needs to be cost-competitive. Financial incentives, subsidies, or low-interest loans could encourage fleet owners to adopt this solution. - Involving retail finance and insurance players in designing retrofit-friendly policies will be crucial for adoption. 3. Standardization and Certification: - The retrofitting process must adhere to strict safety, performance, and environmental standards. - A robust certification framework is required to ensure retrofitted vehicles meet the same standards as newly manufactured EVs. 4. Infrastructural Support: - Charging infrastructure, especially for buses and SCVs operating in urban and rural areas, needs to be developed alongside retrofitting initiatives. - Depots and parking areas for buses and SCVs should be equipped with EV charging facilities. 5. Public Awareness and Collaboration: - Educating fleet operators and users on the benefits of retrofitting—such as reduced maintenance costs, lower fuel expenses, and environmental impact—is vital. - Collaboration between OEMs, technology providers, and fleet operators will foster innovation and scalability. 6. Insights from Tata Motors on #EV Adoption survey Some compelling data points from Tata Motors highlight the growing shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) in India: • 36% of customers have moved away from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. • 75% of customers use EVs as their primary mode of transportation.
