For nearly half of India (47%), short form videos influence purchase decisions. #Offline/ #Retail is back in the centre of #Marketing, #Businessplanning discussions as the #Indianretail market is undergoing significant transformations, but need some careful execution. - #GeneralTrade (GT) and #moderntrade (MT) are mistakenly planned as demand-pull networks, which is correct only for low ticket prices or impulsive purchases. Urbanization and changing consumer preferences through a range of choices have an influence. These are channels for #Conversions and driving sell-outs for strategically planned demands. - Where it is missed on #strategy drawing boards—unless there are no clear demand creator plans and actions—scaling up distribution will put pressure on margins and loss of trust from channel partners since volumes are not driven. - #Brands/ #competitors with strong business relations: This makes it much harder for new entrants to penetrate distribution networks, as they have seen thick and thin together, and SKUs are clearly positioned for customers. Imagine a situation where a store with a wide portfolio of a X brand but the majority of sales is coming from selling its HERO category/ product e.g. mobiles and now one of the market leader brands decides to push out competitors from counter. 🌟 The Value of Market Visits: A Lesson in Execution 🌟 I recently had the chance to spend a day with our local sales team in Bangalore market and during visit, team took me to a hypermart called Brigade, a huge Self Service store being serviced by a GT channel partner. This experience served as a reminder of how essential market visits are for ensuring flawless execution. During our time in the store, we focused on analyzing the consumer sell out price of Saffola Honey against our competitors. Post discovering the absence of price call out, one of our team members (sai kumar: TSE) took the initiative to check the pricing at the counter and made an important discovery: the stock inward that was supposed to happen earlier had not been executed correctly, leading to discrepancies in both quantity and consumer pricing. By addressing this issue quickly with the store manager, our team was able to secure an order of 45k including few more categories, an opportunity that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks without that crucial price check. Clear demonstration of one of Marico values- Bias for action. 💡 Key Takeaway: Aligning the team around a clear objective—like checking market execution— in this case focusing on price and RPI against a key competitor led us to uncover a larger issue that had a direct impact on sales. Market visits are not just about observation; they are about engaging with the market and ensuring we are executing flawlessly. Learnings from my Past, highly relevant in today’s Retail Landscape Way back in 2013-2014, when Large Format Retail business started brewing up in India Market & the likes of Reliance Digital & Infinity Croma started showing up, I for the first time heard of these two fancy terms while attending a business meet @ Samsung HQ. Fully Ignoring these concepts, I went traditional way, pushing Inventories with LFR Partners same way as we used to do with General Trade. To my utter shock, it had a strong backlash & inventories got stuck heavily with LFR Partners with very less sell-out from stores. One would hardly realize those days, how these two terms would revolutionize & rule the Retail landscape in coming times & define the fate of Brands too in long run.  The terms were: GIMROF & GMROI. Now that a decade plus has already passed & Large format Retail contribution today stands at 50% plus, Retail Leaders fully realize how critical & non-negotiable these are to Sustain & Succeed in today’s business landscape. The Crux of these remain: To have most Efficient inventory management for their vast product portfolio.  GMROF – Gross Margin Return on Footage GMROF = (%GM) * (Total Sales of category from a particular fixture or area of store) / (Sq. Ft. Space of the fixture or area of store) Measures the inventory productivity by expressing the relationship between the retailer’s gross margin and the area allocated to the inventory.  Importance of GMROF o  Helps identify the profit generating areas within their retail stores. o  Helps Retailers to make informed decisions regarding the increasing or decreasing allocation of categories within the stores. o  Helps retailers to increase footfall in their stores, leading to higher sales and more profits.  o  Helps retailers optimize display during peak sell-out season allowing them to take advantage of the extra traffic.  GMROI – Gross Margin Return on Investment  GMROI in Retail is = Total Gross Margin earned in a period / Average inventory earned in the period GMROI or Gross Margin Return on Investment is a key metric to find out overall profitability of a store or channel. Point to ponder Data range Q1 2018 to Q2 2024 as per #Counterpoint for the top 5 smartphone brands in India. 1. The highest ever share at which a brand has been No. 1 is 31% by #xiaomi in Q1 2018 and Q1 2020. 2. The lowest share at which a brand has been No. 1 is again Xiaomi at 17% in Q3 2023. 3. The biggest gap between Brand No. 1 and 2 has been 14% (Xiaomi and #Vivo) in Q1 2020. 4. The smallest gap between Brand No. 1 and 2 has been 0 (Xiaomi and #Samsung) in Q2 2018 and Q3 2023 and Vivo and Xiaomi in Q1 2024 5. The highest contribution of the top 5 brands has been 91.6% in Q2 2020. 6. The lowest contribution of the top 5 brands has been 72% in Q4 2018. 7. It took Xiaomi 11 quarters to reach a double digit market share in India. 8. It is not that Xiaomi had a clean run as the No. 1 for 20 quarters as is said. Samsung shared the top slot with them in Q2 2018 and beat them in Q3 2020. 9. The brand with the highest swing in market share has been Xiaomi. 31% as the highest and 16% as lowest. 10. Vivo is the only brand except Xiaomi and Samsung that has crossed 20% market share. 11. Q2 2022 was unique in that the top 4 brands were spaced out by 1% each. Xiaomi at 19%, Samsung at 18%, Vivo at 17% and #REALME at 16%. 12. Q2 2024 was again unique that the top 3 brands were separated by a gap of just o.8%. 18.9% Xiaomi, 18.8% Vivo and 18.1% Samsung. 13. Actually Samsung has not been a clear No. 1 brand as it is assumed in 2023 in all quarters. There was a tie between Vivo and Samsung in Q3 2024, and between Vivo and Xiaomi in Q1 2024. 14. The highest share achieved by #Oppo is 11.4% in Q2 2024. 15. The highest share achieved by #Realme is 16% in Q1 2022. 16. Here's what's in the Future of the Consumer Market in India. According to Bain & Company, the luxury consumer market in India is forecasted to grow to 3.5 times the current size and reach $90 billion by 2030. Key factors driving this growth are: - The number of Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWIs) is growing by 6.1% year on year. - The purchasing power of the middle-income class is increasing. - Global brands are introducing entry-level luxury products in the Indian market. - Demand from Tier 2 and 3 cities is increasing. - Growing entrepreneurship. - And the most significant reason – the increasing use of credit cards for spending (a remarkable 26% YoY surge in February, reaching ₹1.5 lakh crore). Some other trends that I am noticing: - Leading e-commerce platforms like Nykaa, Ajio and Tata CLiQ now have luxury online stores. - The luxury housing market is seeing a boom. The demand for high-rise apartments, farmhouses, and holiday homes is rising in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Bengaluru. - Luxury car brands saw a remarkable 50% increase in sales from 2021. There has been a significant rise in the demand for pre-owned luxury cars too, which means more people are aspiring to buy luxury cars. Indian luxury buyers are an informed, educated and well-travelled set of consumers. They associate luxury with high quality, impeccable service and personalisation on every step of the buyer journey. The transformation in the Indian market is fascinating, and it will be interesting to see how both domestic and international brands respond to the rising demand for luxury goods.
