Project Discovery is a competition led by Enable (India) aimed at collecting and celebrating assistive solutions created or used by people with disabilities. Anyone from the disability community can participate, including PwDs, teachers, organisations, and caregivers. To participate one must shoot a 2-minute video in landscape mode, mention their name, location, problem, and showcase the solution created. The video can be in any language. 20+ winners from 7+ categories will be chosen and awarded a cash prize of up to ₹1 Lakh (for organisations) and ₹25,000 (for individuals). 🚨 Alarming Findings on Popular Street Foods in Karnataka: Panipuri and Shawarma Under the Spotlight 🚨 Recent reports from Karnataka have raised serious concerns among food enthusiasts. The Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSA) in Karnataka revealed that 22% of 260 panipuri samples collected across the state contained harmful food colouring agents and fell short of safety standards. These findings underscore a critical issue that warrants immediate attention. 🇮🇳 India's Love Affair with Street Food 🇮🇳 India's street food culture is unparalleled. According to the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), over 80% of Indians enjoy street food regularly. The affordability, accessibility, and unique flavours make street food an integral part of our culinary landscape. 🔍 But at What Cost? 🔍 Given the recent findings, it’s crucial to reassess our food choices. Street vendors are vital to our economy and culture, but ensuring safety and hygiene is paramount. The FSSA report found carcinogenic agents like Brilliant Blue FCF, Tartrazine, and Sunset Yellow FCF in 41 out of the 260 samples, while 18 other samples were deemed unfit for human consumption due to poor quality. 🍴 If Not Street Food, Then What? 🍴 Considering factors like affordability, accessibility, economy, and time, what are the viable alternatives? -Hygienic food stalls: Encouraging vendors to adopt better hygiene practices through regular health inspections can significantly improve safety. -Home-cooked meals: Promoting simple, quick, and nutritious recipes that can be easily prepared at home. -Standardized food trucks: Supporting food trucks that meet high hygiene standards, offering a safer alternative without sacrificing the taste and convenience of street food. 👩‍🍳 Supporting Our Street Vendors 👨‍🍳 To support our street vendors, it requires: -Training programs: Educating vendors on food safety and hygiene practices. -Microfinance loans: Providing financial support for better infrastructure and sanitation facilities. (Which is even there in our system, the awareness needs to be publicized) -Regular health inspections: Ensuring consistent monitoring and adherence to food safety standards. As someone who has personally seen the care gaps for mental health conditions in one's own family, communities, corporates and across SDGs, this article by the World Economic Forum on India's mental health challenges hits home. The huge 83% treatment gap and less than 1% budget allocation show how this issue has been sidelined for too long. But private philanthropy in India is stepping in and stepping up; to support a range of mental health research, early intervention models, training and bridging access to marginalised communities. It is a privilege to be part of the India Mental Health Alliance (IMHA), an initiative seeded by philanthropists Vasvi Bharat Ram and Ashish Bharat Ram as founding trustees. IMHA's mission to reimagine mental health discourse and practice in India by focusing on lived experiences, local knowledge, and non-clinical approaches is exactly the inclusive method we need. Creating a nationwide alliance and bringing together organisations for capacity building and training is critical to bridging care access in India today. IMHA joins initiatives like Vandrevala Foundation, Tata Trusts, Raintree Foundation, The Live Love Laugh Foundation, Azim Premji Foundation, Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, Mariwala Health Initiative and so on, which have all focused on addressing mental health across the SDGs. Ultimately, as the article puts it, private philanthropic capital is a game changer to catalyse new care models, preventive solutions, and policy reforms that bring mental health to the forefront of public health agendas. With a surge of self-proclaimed gurus and educators infusing personal religious elements, Ayurveda is getting overshadowed by superficial concepts like satvic, rajasic, and tamasic diets, veganism, chakras, asanas, mantra chanting and kundalini awakening. While discussions on nadis and ojas abound, the true essence of Ayurveda, grounded in humility and genuine healing, is at risk of being diluted. The proliferation of Ayurveda mixed packages, offering training without fundamental knowledge or certifications, is fueling a culture of greed and irresponsibility. Aspiring naive practitioners are being lured by the promise of easy certification, leading to a loss of critical thinking and accountability for patient healthcare. Moreover, a growing sentiment against modern medicine further compounds the issue, jeopardizing Ayurveda's credibility.
