❤️‍🩹 On World Humanitarian Day, humanitarian organizations honor the memory of their fallen colleagues and continue to provide support to Ukrainians in need. More than 600 humanitarian NGOs, including volunteer organizations, are officially involved in the humanitarian response in Ukraine, working closely with national and local authorities, UN agencies and donors, and continue to help everyone in need. 🏠 These activities remain essential and necessary for the survival and well-being of Ukrainian communities as the war continues to take its toll. According to the UN Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for 2024, around 15 million people, 40% of Ukraine's population, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Among them are almost 3 million children, 3.4 million elderly people and 3.6 million internally displaced persons. More than 7 million people are in need of urgent food security and livelihood assistance. Public and critical infrastructure facilities that ensure the survival of the population have been severely damaged - about 1.4 million homes have been destroyed or damaged, and 3,800 educational institutions have been damaged or destroyed. 😢 It is worth noting that humanitarian workers risk their lives every day to deliver aid to those in need. Last year alone, 35 humanitarian workers were injured and 11 were killed while carrying out their mission to provide critical assistance to people. 🙏🏻 War destroys lives, damages health, and destroys livelihoods and homes. However, ZOA and other humanitarian organizations continue to support Ukraine in its recovery and reconstruction efforts by providing assistance through their employees. The findings of UNHCR´s first-ever Forced Displacement Survey (FDS) conducted between April and December 2023 on some 3,100 households in South Sudan show that refugee and hosting communities face similar challenges that aggravate protection risks and limit self-reliance opportunities. Results show that those forced to flee to South Sudan often arrive in rural areas with limited basic services, high unemployment rates, lack of education opportunities, poor infrastructure and overcrowded shelters.

Sharing this excellent news from a previous work in Afghanistan. Perfect timing as the CoP 29 just concluded. UNDP, FAO and IOM launched a joint European Union-funded USD 16.2 M initiative on Community and Climate Resilience for Afghanistan, a fragile country facing heavy risk from disasters and climate change. This program is a great example (and strong concrete message!) towards stronger inter-agency cooperation especially among sister UN agencies and key actors like the private sector, not only the big companies but small businesses (MSMEs) as well. The climate hazards are evolving, and so should the way we work, form partnerships, and address climate change in high risk and fragile contexts.

Sharing a participatory research report conducted with 120 children on protracted displacement and durable solutions for IDP children and families. At the heart of the findings is a message that is crystal clear: In today’s poly-crisis environment, traditional approaches which provide short term support aimed at immediate needs, but which fall short of enabling sustained livelihoods over the long term, are no longer sufficient, and children remain at risk unless they can see and live out a future in their new locations. It is time to radically rethink how we approach durable solutions for children. This calls for creative approaches and an agenda that disrupts the current culture of passive provision of services aimed at alleviating immediate humanitarian need upon integration, resettlement or return. Instead, state and non-state actors need to drive an agenda that meaningfully involves children and communities in informing, reshaping and testing solutions to generate more evidence of what works and what doesn’t, ideally with a view to promoting livelihoods, climate mitigation and adaptation, and strengthening urban environments and local governance.
