While 2025 freight contracting may seem far off for many, the factors influencing beneficial cargo owner (BCO) freight strategies for next year are more immediate—and potentially more disruptive. The most pressing factor is the outcome of the US presidential election on Nov. 5. A Harris administration is likely to maintain the current status quo with China. However, a Trump administration has signaled a tariff war, particularly targeting China. Whether this is just pre-election rhetoric or not, US importers would be wise to prepare for a scenario involving tariff disruptions and significant unpredictability. If a Trump administration enacts 200% tariffs, importers could face unexpected increases in landed costs, either from a single source or across multiple origins. April 25th, at Smart Freight Week, SFC China officially released the Chinese version of GLEC Framework 3.0, which will greatly facilitate companies to use an internationally recognized industry guidelines to calculate and report logistics carbon emissions and adopt GLEC Framework to China market. Meanwhile, SFC China office is to publish the 1st batch of fuel emission factors and GHG emission intensity value for China, in line with ISO 14083 and GLEC requirement. The publication includes a summary of the Chinese default values, as well as a brief description of the methodologies, sources, and gap analysis.
