Food systems do not work in a vacuum. They are informed by legal frameworks and policies agreed upon by governments and regional blocs. This is why we seek government actors keen on identifying gaps in current policies and reforming them to make food systems more healthy, inclusive and sustainable in the region. The African Food Fellowship helps people working in government institutions to improve their leadership skills and knowledge, connect and work with people in other sectors, and to create meaningful change on the ground. The Fellowship also provides a space for policymakers to engage with food systems actors who provide perspectives based on realities and practice that can lead to more responsive policies for food systems. We welcome all cadres of civil servants, whether national, regional, or local. Join us today. What a milestone Dave Okech Okech! We couldn't be more proud of you and the impact you continue to make in the Aquaculture sector. Super excited to see all the aquaculture superstars who will benefit from this. #TransformingFoodSystems
We've Launched AquaFedha: Africa's First Credit Finance Product. AquaFedha is bridging the critical financing gap for small and medium-sized fish farmers to transition them from subsistence to profitable, commercial-scale production. Why AquaFedha is a Game-Changer for African Aquaculture 1. Solving the "Unbankable" Challenge Many small-scale fish farmers lack collateral, formal records, or large enough operations to qualify for traditional loans. AquaFedha’s tailored credit model (backed by AquaRech LTD & Equity Bank) assesses farmers based on production potential, not just conventional banking metrics. 2. Fueling Commercial Transition Subsistence → Commercial Farming: Credit allows farmers to: Buy high-quality fingerlings & feed in bulk (lowering costs). Invest in HDPE cages and Large scale ponds to increase yield Adopt technology & Data (Mobile app). Meet market demand consistently (supply local fish traders). 3. Strengthening Africa’s Food Systems Small/medium fish farmers produce ~60% of Africa’s aquaculture output but remain trapped in poverty due to lack of capital. AquaFedha aligns with the African Food Systems by ensuring: Nutrition security (affordable protein for local communities). Job creation (women & youth in fish farming & processing). Climate resilience (funds for sustainable practices ) 4. Partnership Power: AquaRech + Equity Bank + Technoserve AquaRech’s expertise in aquaculture training & technology ensures farmers use loans effectively. Equity Bank’s financial inclusion model adapts to smallholder needs (flexible repayment, digital lending). Technoserve's TechnoServe CASA program supporting the Blended Finance Product Key Features of AquaFedha for Farmers ✅ Low-Interest Loans – Affordable capital for feed, equipment, and expansion. ✅ Technical Support – AquaRech provides training on best practices, disease control ✅ Market Access – Links to farmers to processors, retailers, and consumers. ✅ Digital Integration – Mobile-based loan applications, repayments, and advisory services. Key Take Aways on AquaFedha a) "AquaFedha is farmers gateway to profitable fish farming! Get loans for feed, cages, and technology—plus expert training from AquaRech. Move from struggling to thriving with Africa’s first credit product made for fish farmers." b) "Supporting AquaFedha means investing in food security, jobs, and climate-smart aquaculture. Partner with us to scale up Africa’s smallholder fish farmers." c) "AquaFedha tackles a $5 billion credit gap in African aquaculture. Back a sustainable, high-impact model that lifts farmers out of poverty while boosting local economies." "AquaFedha isn’t just about loans—it’s about transforming Africa’s aquaculture into an engine of growth, food security, and prosperity for millions of small-scale farmers." Tunnel vision may help you to move fast and attain short term goals, but for sustainable impact, you need a critical understanding of how systems work and how to pursue your vision within the broader picture. In simpler words, you need to work with others. It is for this reason that the African Food Fellowship brings together different leaders working in different sectors of the agri-food system to create a rich network where variety and diversity is celebrated and valued. We help these leaders to leverage their interconnectedness and expertise so they can work collectively towards impact and progress in our food systems. Whether you are a soil scientist, cooperative leader, farmer, extension office, food producer, policymaker, food tech developer, program manager, food transporter, financier, nutritionist or activist, the African Food Fellowship is the place to meet your peers and charge your passion for food systems. Send in your application ahead of the deadline on 25th April 2025 https://lnkd.in/dxj3BifX

Why does the African Food Fellowship exist? We acknowledge that a lot of investments have been made to end hunger, tackle malnutrition, raise productivity, and generally improve food systems in Africa. However, few have focused on building the capacity of the people tasked with delivering these ambitious targets. We see that Africa needs good leaders to deliver healthy, inclusive, and sustainable food systems. While many such leaders are already doing valuable work in their fields, most work in silos focusing on individual or organizational goals, without considering the larger ecosystem in which they operate. This way of working has so far failed to provide sustainable responses to the big challenges facing food systems today, including food insecurity, climate change and poverty. The complex and interconnected challenges that affect African food systems require leaders who understand food systems and can work together to drive bold change. Are you one? Well, we are looking for you. Join the 5th Cohort of the African Food Fellowship and immerse yourself in a transformative food systems leadership programme! Apply by 25th April via this link https://lnkd.in/dxj3BifX #AfricanFoodSystems #FoodSystemsLeadership Wasafiri African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Wageningen University & Research Joost Guijt Alex Rees Claudia Piacenza Brenda Mareri Anysie Ishimwe

At the heart of the African Food Fellowship is inclusion. We believe that food systems transformation is only possible if everyone in society can play a part. We want to enhance the role of people with disabilities who are leading communities every day in transforming food systems. Their approach to food systems properly encapsulates responsive and sustainable food systems as they address pressing challenges and gaps that exclude PWDs from value chains and discussions on nutrition security and sustainable livelihoods. The Fellowship is specially curated for you! Find out how you can apply via this link https://lnkd.in/dxj3BifX

Actors within the NGO and civil society space have been instrumental in championing for change that targets health, inclusion, and sustainability. They have historically been at the forefront of initiatives addressing food insecurity, climate change and poverty. The African Food Fellowship wants to admit those particularly working with vulnerable communities and focus on climate change and biodiversity loss mitigation. At the Fellowship, you stand to gain know-how and networks that will scale up individual and institutional vision, strategy, and impact. https://lnkd.in/dxj3BifX Wasafiri Wageningen University & Research Small Foundation IKEA Foundation Claudia Piacenza Alex Rees Brenda Mareri Anysie Ishimwe African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) AGRA
