It is estimated that Kenya loses between 30-40% of harvests every year while her neighbour, Rwanda records 40% annual post-harvest losses. These numbers almost mirror the status of post-harvest losses in Africa that are estimated at 30-50%. This not only bears significant socio-economic consequences for farmers but poses a threat to the environment, food security and resource sustainability for African countries. Rwanda Food Fellow Dr Ildephonse Habinshuti is currently pursuing a food systems action (FSA) that is addressing post-harvest loss reduction in Rwanda and the rest of the continent. He notes that this can be largely attributed to lack of proper infrastructure and knowledge to solve poor handling and storage practices, pests and diseases, environmental factors, unethical trade practices and disjointed food supply chains. Reading from the same page as him is the Rwandan 5th Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation (PSTA5) that prioritises reduction of post-harvest losses through various strategies. At the 2nd Transform Food Festival in Kigali last year, Dr Ildephonse along with other Fellows interacted with the policy document, submitting critical proposals to Agricultural Ministry to address problems within the food systems they work in. Leading change through good leadership is what the African Food Fellowship equips you to do. The Fellowship creates spaces for stakeholders to align on priority areas for the continent’s food systems while using a collaborative approach to address systemic challenges. Be a part of this network by applying to join the 5th Cohort. Food systems do not work in a vacuum. They are informed by legal frameworks and policies agreed upon by governments and regional blocs. This is why we seek government actors keen on identifying gaps in current policies and reforming them to make food systems more healthy, inclusive and sustainable in the region. The African Food Fellowship helps people working in government institutions to improve their leadership skills and knowledge, connect and work with people in other sectors, and to create meaningful change on the ground. The Fellowship also provides a space for policymakers to engage with food systems actors who provide perspectives based on realities and practice that can lead to more responsive policies for food systems. We welcome all cadres of civil servants, whether national, regional, or local. Join us today. What a milestone Dave Okech Okech! We couldn't be more proud of you and the impact you continue to make in the Aquaculture sector. Super excited to see all the aquaculture superstars who will benefit from this. #TransformingFoodSystems
We've Launched AquaFedha: Africa's First Credit Finance Product. AquaFedha is bridging the critical financing gap for small and medium-sized fish farmers to transition them from subsistence to profitable, commercial-scale production. Why AquaFedha is a Game-Changer for African Aquaculture 1. Solving the "Unbankable" Challenge Many small-scale fish farmers lack collateral, formal records, or large enough operations to qualify for traditional loans. AquaFedha’s tailored credit model (backed by AquaRech LTD & Equity Bank) assesses farmers based on production potential, not just conventional banking metrics. 2. Fueling Commercial Transition Subsistence → Commercial Farming: Credit allows farmers to: Buy high-quality fingerlings & feed in bulk (lowering costs). Invest in HDPE cages and Large scale ponds to increase yield Adopt technology & Data (Mobile app). Meet market demand consistently (supply local fish traders). 3. Strengthening Africa’s Food Systems Small/medium fish farmers produce ~60% of Africa’s aquaculture output but remain trapped in poverty due to lack of capital. AquaFedha aligns with the African Food Systems by ensuring: Nutrition security (affordable protein for local communities). Job creation (women & youth in fish farming & processing). Climate resilience (funds for sustainable practices ) 4. Partnership Power: AquaRech + Equity Bank + Technoserve AquaRech’s expertise in aquaculture training & technology ensures farmers use loans effectively. Equity Bank’s financial inclusion model adapts to smallholder needs (flexible repayment, digital lending). Technoserve's TechnoServe CASA program supporting the Blended Finance Product Key Features of AquaFedha for Farmers ✅ Low-Interest Loans – Affordable capital for feed, equipment, and expansion. ✅ Technical Support – AquaRech provides training on best practices, disease control ✅ Market Access – Links to farmers to processors, retailers, and consumers. ✅ Digital Integration – Mobile-based loan applications, repayments, and advisory services. Key Take Aways on AquaFedha a) "AquaFedha is farmers gateway to profitable fish farming! Get loans for feed, cages, and technology—plus expert training from AquaRech. Move from struggling to thriving with Africa’s first credit product made for fish farmers." b) "Supporting AquaFedha means investing in food security, jobs, and climate-smart aquaculture.
