As social enterprise to improve productivity, increase income, build an inclusive business for small-scale fish farmers
About us
We are a social enterprise targeting rural based small-scale fish farmers to improve their productivity, increase income and develop an inclusive community based aquaculture value chain. Aquarech App is a centralized database system that links key actors in the fish value chain namely; farmers, trader and input suppliers. The innovation monitors growth of fish from the time of stocking to the time of sale. It provides vital production data such as the quantity of feed fed, average daily growth, FCR, fish price, feed cost. Further to this the innovation has an inbuilt feeding regime that calculates automatically for the farmer the exact amount of feed to be fed based on water temperature, size of fish and quantity of fish. Our Objectives : To improve fish production through better data recording practices utilizing the App within the first year of operation To connect farmers and traders through a streamlined online trading platform based on the App To connect input suppliers and farmers through a customized central database hosted on the App within six months To reduce/eliminate fish for sex trade by enabling women fish traders to access fish through a verified platform free of any manipulated data or circumstances within the first harvest.

Hello Technical Tuesday! Let's talk about tilapia attraction & reproduction How Do Tilapia Attract Mates? Tilapia have an interesting courtship process: 🏠 Males build nests; they dig circular depressions in the substrate to attract females. 🎭 Color changes; males turn brighter or darker to show dominance. 💃 Dance displays; males perform side to side movements to impress females. How Do Tilapia Reproduce? Tilapia are mouthbrooders, meaning the female carries the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch! 🥚 Egg laying; the female lays eggs in the nest. 🐠 Fertilization; the male fertilizes them externally. 👄 Mouth brooding; the female picks up the eggs and keeps them safe in her mouth for about 5-10 days until they hatch. 🔄 Parental care; even after hatching, baby fish (fry) sometimes return to their mother’s mouth for protection. How to Tell Male & Female Tilapia Apart Males - Larger with a pointed genital papilla. - More colorful, especially during mating. - Aggressive & territorial. - No egg-laying opening. Females -Rounder belly with a two hole genital opening (one for eggs, one for excretion ). - Less colorful, smaller. - Mouthbrooding behavior (if carrying eggs).

AquaRech LTD, a Kenyan agtech startup, is on a mission to transform the lives of small and medium-sized fish farmers.🐟 Millions of people in regions surrounding the African Great Lakes depend on fisheries for their livelihoods. However, overfishing, pollution, and climate change threaten this vital income source. Aquaculture offers a sustainable solution, but farmers face challenges like limited access to quality feed, credit, and fair markets. Founded by the father-son duo David and Joseph Okech, along with James Odede, Aquarech is Kenya’s first digital platform dedicated to aquaculture. Through their innovative B2B and B2C models, they provide farmers with: 🔹 Access to high-quality fish feed 🔹 Credit through a buy now, pay later (BNPL) model 🔹 Direct market access, bypassing exploitative middlemen This comprehensive approach empowers farmers to increase productivity and profitability, contributing to a more sustainable and secure fishing industry in East Africa. Imagine learning how to swim by just reading a book. You might know all the strokes, but until you jump in the water, you won't truly understand how it works! That's why hands on learning is so important in fish farming. We recently had a group of students from @Mawego National Polytechnic visit our facilities for an academic workshop. Instead of just learning from lectures, they got to experience fish farming firsthand! With the guidance of our team, they were taken on a tour of our fish processing unit and warehouse at the headquaters where they learned how the processes take place and the job opportunities in these areas guided by Adesa Victor. Next, they proceeded to the Aquarech Technical and Transfer Center where they had sessions on good fish farming practices such as feeding and feed collection, pond management and water quality led by Eunice Opany and Broodstock management and fingerling production trained by Metrine Opiyo. Finally, we proceeded to Fish Farmilia and Fish Deli to provide a clear understanding of the whole aquaculture value chain, from when a fish is born to how it gets to the table. One student said, "At least I get to put my theory into practice!" It's really inspiring to see young people learn and grow in a less popular industry like aquaculture. #academicweek
