African ports play a critical role in global maritime routes, particularly those along the East African coastline, which serve as key transit points for vessels navigating the Suez Canal. The ongoing expansion and modernisation of these ports offer promising opportunities for growth in the bunkering sector, especially for refuelling services. In this regard, Port Louis, the unique port of Mauritius has seen significant growth in bunkering activities in recent years. As Port Louis continues to play an important role in global shipping, key stakeholders for bunkering had convened in Mauritius for the recently concluded 2-day Maritime Week Africa 2025 conference. These stakeholders included maritime fuel experts, bunker suppliers and buyers, port authorities and policymakers. The conference offered a forum for discussing the issues facing the marine fuels sector in Africa and new prospects, with a focus on alternative fuels, on a regional and international level. The conference witnessed high-level participation namely the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Hon. Dr Arvin Boolell, GOSK; the Special Envoy and Advisor for Maritime and Blue Economy, Executive Office of the President of Kenya, Mrs Nancy Karigithu; the Chief Executive Officer of ship.energy, Mr Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes; the Acting Director General of Mauritius Port Authority (MPA), Mrs Aruna Bunwaree Ramsaha. The Maritime Week Africa event was held for the first time in Mauritius, underscoring the island nation's strategic, growing importance and commercial significance in the maritime sector, its expanding role the Indian Ocean, and its place in Africa's blue economy.
