A recent survey has linked climate change to escalating food insecurity in Southeast Asia, with 70% of participants reporting difficulties in securing enough food. The 2024 Southeast Asia Climate Outlook Survey reveals that both rising food prices and climate change are key drivers of the growing crisis. Conducted by the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, the survey shows an increase from 60% in 2023 to 70% of respondents now facing food shortages. Of these, 42.5% attribute the problem to rising food prices, while 28.8% point to climate change as a major factor. Extreme weather events—such as droughts, floods, typhoons, and heatwaves—are becoming more common, worsening food insecurity in the region. The survey emphasizes that climate change is no longer a distant threat but is already affecting daily lives, particularly in terms of food access. The broader impact of climate change is also a growing concern, with nearly 60% of respondents expecting significant changes to their lives in the next decade. More than half believe the health effects of climate change will be severe. Gathering input from 2,931 individuals across the ten ASEAN nations, the survey also highlights growing support for climate action. About 70% of respondents back the introduction of national carbon taxes, with over 90% willing to bear the personal costs of such policies. Support for carbon taxes is strongest in Vietnam (75%) and Indonesia (73.5%). Despite the increasing food insecurity, the momentum for decarbonization is rising, driven by government initiatives and individual commitments. ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute's Director and CEO, Choi Shing Kwok, noted that the survey tracks regional climate perceptions during a time of post-pandemic recovery, heightened climate ambition, and geopolitical uncertainty. The survey also indicates a shift in perceptions of global climate leadership. Japan has overtaken the European Union, with 22.4% of respondents naming it the leading player in global climate efforts. In Sungai Siput, Perak, a group of single mothers, who are smallholders, were introduced to oyster mushroom cultivation. They received comprehensive training on the mushroom's life cycle and the necessary equipment to begin cultivation. 🍄 This initiative extends from an earlier oyster mushroom farming project in Bagan Datuk, Perak. As part of this project, 1,000 mushroom blocks were distributed to a group of single mothers. These women were trained in accurate data recording and monitoring. From their first cultivation cycle in March 2023, they harvested 545 kg of mushrooms and earned approximately RM 3,000 (around €588). 👩‍🌾 💸 After the profits were distributed equally among the members, they purchased an additional 400 mushroom blocks. Puan Aminah and Puan Habsah, two of the mushroom cultivators from this group, expressed their confidence in continuing mushroom cultivation due to its low maintenance and labour requirements, along with the additional income it provides. ✅ 🗣 “Since I started participating in this project, I can now improve my income by selling mushrooms to the villagers and not rely solely on palm oil to support my family. The Solidaridad Perak team always visits us to monitor our progress and solve any issue during cultivation,” says Aminah Saadan. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 The country’s honey production increased by 12 percent in 2023, with about 41.8 metric tonnes of honey extracted last year compared to 37.2 metric tonnes in 2022. Samtse, Bumthang, and Sarpang are the leading dzongkhags in honey production. In 2023, a total of 18,523 beehives were recorded from 7,508 beehive holders, up from 6,342 in 2022. Of these beehives, 92 percent are local. The government has also expanded the apiculture program to boost the production of blossom honey, pot honey, and comb honey, largely through UN Development Programme grants. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock has implemented various activities, including the procurement and supply of 187 full-fledged honeybee colonies, the promotion of 250 improved flow hive technology, and the provision of bee feeds and equipment for beekeepers. https://lnkd.in/guvsSiJf

[ Protect our wildlife 🙏🏻 ] In parliament, I asked in respect of the 445 development projects where directions have been issued under section 10 of the Wildlife Act on wildlife-related measures for development or works since 2020, what are the most common types of directions issued, what steps does the Ministry take to verify compliance with the directions and what are the consequences for the three projects which have recorded contraventions. Minister shared, "The measures imposed within directions issued under section 10 of the Wildlife Act depend on the nature of the development and its location. The most common types of measures are pre-felling checks for bird nests and other wildlife, and restricted working hours, as they mitigate common impacts arising from development. To ensure compliance with directions, developers may be required to develop and implement an Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan, and provide monitoring reports to the National Parks Board (NParks). NParks reviews these reports to verify compliance with the directions issued. NParks also conducts site inspections for developments, where necessary. For the three projects that have recorded contraventions against directions issued, NParks had taken enforcement action m against the main contractors involved." 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 The production of major cereals in the country decreased last year, according to the Integrated Agriculture and Livestock Census 2023 released by the National Statistics Bureau recently. Bhutan recorded approximately 69,008 agricultural holdings, comprising 66,440 family farms and 2,568 commercial farms. This marks an increase from 67,093 agricultural holdings in 2022. The total production of major cereals in 2023 was 68,786 metric tonnes (MT), a two-percent decline from the previous year’s 70,168 MT. The number of growers also dropped from 22,138 individuals in 2022 to 21,891 in 2023. Punakha, Paro, and Wangdue were the top dzongkhags in cereal production, collectively contributing 30 percent of the total. Punakha alone produced 7,971 MT of cereals. Paddy production last year included 40,563 MT of irrigated paddy and 241 MT of upland paddy, recording marginal declines of 0.5 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively, compared to 2022. Punakha Dzongkhag harvested 7,761 MT of irrigated paddy despite a slight decrease from the previous year. Paro Dzongkhag increased its irrigated paddy production to 7,024 MT, up by 820 MT from 2022, while Wangdue recorded a slight decrease with 4,449 MT. Maize production is mostly concentrated in dzongkhags like Trashigang, Mongar, Pemagatshel, and Tsirang. The country also produced 965.51 MT of buckwheat, 837.01 MT of wheat, 530.26 MT of millet, 518.13 MT of barley, and 12.87 MT of quinoa. Farmers in Bhutan cultivate a variety of vegetables, with pumpkins, squash and gourds, cabbage, cauliflower, chili, broccoli, and beans being the most viable across the country. Last year, about 26,825 MT of vegetables were produced, a slight increase from 26,726 MT in 2022. Under the category of oilseeds and pulses, mustard and soybeans were predominant. Production increased to 1,092.21 MT in 2023, up from 1,012.81 MT in 2022, which is mainly attributed to an increase in the harvest area. In Bhutan, potato, cassava and ground apple are the main roots and tubers. A total of 38,327 MT of roots and tuber was produced in 2023 – an increase of 6,768 MT from 2022. Wangude, Paro and Chukha dzongkhags were the dominant roots and tuber producers. Bhutan produces a wide range of fruits and nuts. About 42,780 MT of fruits were harvested in 2023. Of this, 34,895 MT were major fruits such as apples, mandarins, and areca nuts, while 84 MT were newly promoted fruits like watermelon, kiwi, and dragon fruit. Among the dzongkhags, Paro ranked first in apple production, followed by Thimphu, Haa, and Bumthang. Samtse, Sarpang, and Dagana dominated areca nut production. Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Agriculture   Ram Dulari, a 46-year-old farmer from Rahimabad Grant village, Hardoi, was struggling to sustain her small dairy business. Despite her hard work, she faced numerous challenges, including limited knowledge of modern practices, poor nutrition for her four cows, and low milk yields. The frequent illnesses and mounting veterinary costs took a toll on her family's well-being. However, in 2024, her fortunes changed when she enrolled in Samuday by HCLFoundation's Capacity Building of Dairy Farmers initiative under its Dairy Development Project.   Through comprehensive training, Ram Dulari gained valuable insights into balanced animal nutrition, disease prevention, and cleanliness, which significantly improved dairy productivity. She also learned about artificial insemination, enabling her to enhance her herd's genetic quality. The results were remarkable: within months, her cows produced 30% more milk, with improved quality. The reduced incidence of diseases led to cost savings, which she reinvested in better infrastructure for her dairy.   Ram Dulari's success inspired other women in her village to adopt modern techniques, fostering collective progress.
