Empowered women are a catalyst for growth. Alitheia Capital’s Co-founder & Managing Director, Tokunboh Ishmael, stood alongside Andrew McDowell, Director General of the European Investment Bank (EIB) , to emphasize a powerful truth: Educated, empowered women drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and build resilient communities. Africa has the highest rate of women entrepreneurs globally. Yet, women-led businesses receive less than 5% of available funds, despite consistently delivering 20% better performance. At Alitheia Capital, we believe inclusive investment is the key to unlocking Africa’s full potential. By supporting diverse businesses, we foster innovation, create jobs, and drive sustainable growth. Together, we can build a more equitable and prosperous future. A Milestone Moment: Alitheia Capital and Goodwell Investments Exit Baobab Nigeria We’re pleased to announce the successful exit of Baobab Nigeria, marking the first exit from our joint uMunthu Fund. This exit is a testament to the power of patient capital, dedicated partnerships, and the belief that inclusive finance can drive transformative change. When we first invested in Baobab Nigeria (formerly MicroCred) in 2012, it was a small microfinance institution operating from a single room in Kaduna. Our partnership, later expanded through the uMunthu Fund in 2015, was built on a shared vision to bridge the financial gap for underserved communities. Today, Baobab Nigeria stands as one of the country’s leading microfinance banks, serving 230,000 customers across 16 states. The Numbers Tell a Story of Impact: ● Expanded from 5 branches to 38 branches ● Loan book grew 43.5x and the balance sheet grew 37x ● Staff strength increased by 3.2x ● Average loan size remains small, ensuring financial services stay accessible to MSMEs and underserved individuals ● Significant role in reducing Nigeria’s financial exclusion, contributing to a drop from 70% unbanked in 2012 to 26% in 2023 Why This Matters: Our local presence as investors, coupled with our hands-on approach, has been a key driver of Baobab Nigeria’s success. From governance enhancements to financial structuring and market insights, our collaboration empowered the company to scale sustainably. This exit reinforces the immense potential of impact-driven investing in Africa. What’s Next? While our chapter with Baobab Nigeria concludes, we’re excited to continue supporting businesses through the uMunthu II Fund, which is actively raising capital. The success of Baobab Nigeria serves as a strong reminder of what’s possible when capital meets purpose. To the incredible team at Baobab Nigeria, thank you for your dedication and partnership. We’re proud to have been part of your journey and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Here’s to more milestones ahead!
