💡Mastering Feature Prioritization In product design, choosing the right features to focus on can make or break a project. Early in my career, I realized that without a structured approach, prioritization often becomes subjective and chaotic. That’s when I turned to frameworks like the ‘RICE Method’ and ‘Kano Model’ to bring clarity and alignment to the process. Here’s how I’ve applied these methods: 1️⃣ The RICE Method 🔹Reach:How many users will benefit? 🔹 Impact: How much value does this feature deliver? 🔹 Confidence: How certain are we about the data behind reach and impact? 🔹 Effort: How much time and resources will it take to build? 👉 My Experience: Using RICE helped me prioritize features for a mobile app redesign. When stakeholders pushed for high-effort, low-reach features, having clear RICE scores helped me justify focusing on impactful, quick wins instead. 2️⃣ The Kano Model The Kano Model categorizes features into: 🔸 Basic Needs: Essential features users expect. 🔸 Performance Features: The more we deliver, the more users appreciate it. 🔸 Delighters: Unexpected features that wow users. 👉 My Example: In a fintech project, we started with basic needs like security and account access, then gradually introduced delighters like personalized dashboards, which significantly boosted user satisfaction. 3️⃣ Collaboration Is Key Prioritization works best when all voices are heard—users, stakeholders, and developers. 👉 Lesson Learned: I always organize workshops to score features together. This ensures alignment across the team and avoids surprises during development. 4️⃣ Iterate, Iterate, Iterate Prioritization is not set in stone. User feedback and business goals evolve, and so should your priorities. 👉 My Approach: Regularly revisiting the roadmap allowed me to pivot quickly when a “nice-to-have” feature unexpectedly became a top user request. 📌 The Result: By combining structured frameworks with flexibility, I’ve delivered products that are not only impactful but also deeply aligned with user needs. What makes you a Product Designer ✅ 1. You must deeply consider how people use things, ensuring that what you create is easy for them and suits their needs. 🤔 2. Designing something that is aesthetically pleasing and simple is not enough to earn accolades and recognition. 🤩 3. Giving a medal for good design solely based on appearance is absurd. The functionality and usability for people must be prioritized. 🎯 4. It's not about receiving praise and awards for a visually appealing design. First it was product design, now, it is product management. I have been a product designer for a while now, I got into Anchoria as a product designer, and I have been privileged to work on amazing products like SEEDs by Anchoria, and also redesigned Anchoriaam.com, and I have learnt a great deal about how the asset management space works. It has been bliss so far. In my time here, I noticed that I have gotten interested in things beyond design, basically the whole product life cycle. The business end, how well it does in the market and it got me thinking; is product management the next step for me? A big shift if you ask me, I took my leap and got to work with the help of Zamai Banje, CPM , and so far it has helped my long term thinking because I'm not just focused on making things look pretty today, but I am also thinking about where the product is heading, and I can balance what users need, what the company wants, and what we can actually do. The best part? I'm not just the 'design person' anymore. I can chip in on bigger decisions and really shape the product. If you're a designer thinking about learning some PM stuff, go for it! It's like giving your career a power-up.

I know the journey can be tough, but I want you to know that every late night, every frustrating design iteration, and every critique is worth it. As you navigate the ups and downs of this field, remember that: Your unique perspective is needed. Every "no" brings you closer to the "yes" that will launch your career. Each failure & disappointment you face is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle. Why Good Design Starts with Great Research: My Lilac Africa Experience I would like to share some observations from the course I've been taking with Lilac Africa of Kachi Kalu, Bolutife Awakan, MBA (our principal), as well as a significant turning point in my UI/UX design career. This four-month product design degree program has been an in-depth exploration of important aspects of the industry. We just finished the first six weeks, during which time our tutor, Nuel Wogundu, helped us understand the complicated nature of user research. I learned a lot, and it was a rewarding experience. Now, as we move into the next 6 weeks, we will begin working on our projects and I can't wait to apply what I've learned about user research in practice. As someone who has been learning UI/UX design for a while now, this course really deepened my understanding of how User Research drives good design. One key realization was that, as a designer, I don’t start with the problem—I start with the people. Once you truly understand your users, you can build meaningful solutions. User research is the foundation of good design. It helps me gather valuable data, understand users' needs, behaviors, motivations, and pain points. From this data, I can formulate a clear problem statement and conduct analysis from surveys, interviews, and other research methods. This process helps me empathize with the users by identifying how they think, feel, what they say, and what they do. With this deep understanding, I can: Develop user personas that represent key user groups. Identify pain points and opportunities for creating solutions. Conduct competitive analysis to see what my competitors are offering and figure out how I can stand out. Design a well-thought-out user flow and information architecture that maps out the user journey and ensures seamless navigation. These learnings have given me a new perspective on how to approach design problems effectively. I now see user research as a non-negotiable step in the design process, one that significantly increases the likelihood of building a product that truly solves user problems. So yeah, this has been a deep learning experience, and I am super enthusiastic about what the next 6 weeks will bring. Broooooooo.. 😫😫😫😫😫 I am really tired of explaining this to young designers but I guess I will have to say it again! 😫😫😫😫😫 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 "If your Portfolio is not good, my referral won't get you selected." 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 Everyday, I get at least 10 messages from designers asking me for referrals thinking that it will get them shortlisted "AT LEAST FOR THE FIRST ROUND". But that is not how it works! Here are a few reasons why! 1️⃣ - There is a difference between a referral and a personal recommendation. Referrals, can be done via an online portal given to us but Personal recommendations are done when I directly go to the recruiters/hiring manager and tell about you! 2️⃣ - If I don't know you and you keep texting me for referral, I might give up and upload your resume on the portal just to close the conversation. In this case, you might have gotten a referrals but you most certainly lost me and my attention for future. 3️⃣ - If I don't know you, I am definitely not making a referral, just to get referral bonus! Every time someone makes a referral, it is a silent endorsement from their side. And if I do referrals without knowing people and they don't get selected, I get bad rep on my name and nobody wants that! 4️⃣ - Most of the times referrals go unnoticed by recruiters! Recruiters have to go through 1000s of resumes from multiple hiring portals and it is very likely that a referral will go unnoticed purely because there is not enough time to look at every single resume! 5️⃣ - Referrals are very overhyped and I have never asked for one! I have applied directly to companies like Google, Wells fargo, rippling and a lot many big names and always gotten a callback because they liked my work and found me suitable for the role! 6️⃣ - Your desperation get a job somewhere is costing you a lot of time waste! Young designers keep applying to random positions in hopes they will get a call back rather than spending that time on sharpening their skills and knowledge about specific topics and becoming a master of them! Note: "EVEN GENERALISTS HAVE CERTAIN SPECIFIC SKILLS." To sum it up, stop asking random people for approvals! Instead, try to ask - people about the role - about the company - if it will be suitable for you or not - the orgs culture, their pay scale - their expectations from certain positions etc etc! Can a Bank's Website Really Change the Way You Experience Finance? As UX designers, we believe it can. And we’re currently taking on a challenge that has the potential to impact millions of people. My team and I have started redesigning the homepage of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). For those who might not know, CBN isn’t your average commercial bank. It’s the central hub of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, overseeing everything from monetary policies to national financial stability. But here’s the problem: 📌 The current landing page is cluttered with information, making it hard to find what you need. 📌 Poor typography makes the content hard to read. 📌 Essential sections are buried and difficult to access. 📌 There’s little hierarchy or white space to guide users, resulting in confusion. In our world, the experience on a website isn’t just about looks , it’s about delivering critical information to people who need it most, whether that’s businesses, government officials, or the public. What did we do on Day 1? We started by looking at who actually uses the site and what they need from it. Our goal is to understand how we can make the experience smoother and more intuitive for different types of users , from someone seeking a simple financial report to businesses navigating regulatory policies. We also studied some of the best practices from websites of other major central banks around the world. Next up: conducting a UX audit and brainstorming on what we can improve. Why does this matter? This project is more than just a redesign. It’s about rethinking how people interact with critical financial information. In a country as dynamic as Nigeria, access to clear and accurate information is vital for businesses, individuals, and policymakers. ___________________________________ 🔻 We’d love to hear your thoughts! Let me ask you, if you wanted to buy a body cream  And you there are 2 vendors you have your eyes on via WhatsApp One is always posting: Up and grateful, Open for business OR the worst Come and buy my product so I can eat (SMH) And the other educates you on how to find the best body cream for your skin type and desires. Which would you go for?  Easy choice right? Because the latter has proven he knows his turf! Instead of sending that cold email and shoving your portfolio and CV in the emails and DMs of recruiters, why not try a different approach? You have done this for weeks and months - still the same result Try another one by showing you are knowledgeable in your field. I was struck by how much it resonated with my own journey in UX design. When I first started, I devoured tutorials on YouTube like there was no tomorrow. But whenever I completed a project, I felt unsatisfied. Why? Because every resource was handed to me by the instructor. Sometimes I’d struggle to grasp certain parts, but I’d follow along anyway since that’s what the instructor was doing. Now, you might be wondering: “Where do I start?” That’s where having a mentor makes all the difference. A mentor doesn’t just provide you with answers—they guide you to solve problems independently, empowering you to create and build on your own terms. And that’s exactly what Mentorix Mentorship is here to offer! Tutorials are a great starting point, but they won’t take you very far. Day 23: Lessons from The Design of Everyday The Gulf of Execution is a critical concept in design that highlights the gap between a user’s goal and their ability to take the necessary actions to achieve it. Don Norman explains it as: "The Gulf of Execution is the difference between what a user wants to do and what the system allows them to do." -------Breaking It Down------- The User’s Goal: What the user wants to accomplish. Example: Sending a message via a messaging app. The System’s Interface: The available tools, buttons, or controls that allow users to act. Example: The app provides a “Send” button but hides it under multiple layers of menus. The Gap: When the design is unclear or actions are unintuitive, users struggle to bridge the gap. Examples: Good Design: A camera app with a prominent shutter button ensures users can easily take photos. Bad Design: A thermostat requiring users to navigate cryptic menus to adjust the temperature leaves users frustrated. Why It Matters: Minimizing the Gulf of Execution ensures users can easily perform tasks without confusion or unnecessary effort. Designers achieve this by: - Providing clear signifiers (labels, icons, or prompts). - Ensuring tasks are intuitive and flow naturally. - Offering feedback to confirm the user’s actions.
