Elestor's flow battery: Large scale, Long duration, Scalable & Affordable
Over ons
Elestor has introduced an innovative electricity storage technology for large scale stationary applications (LDES), based on the flow battery principle. With this, the electricity storage costs (LCoS) are reduced to an absolute minimum. Low cost, abundant active materials are used, combined with a patented system design and easy to manufacture and compact cells. This triple cost reduction strategy enables introduction of viable business cases, which are essential to stimulate the adoption of electricity storage and thus to accelerate the energy transition. The technology has the potential to replace fossil power plants at GWh scale (bi-directional power plants) and has all the properties to become the equivalent in large-scale long duration electricity storage of what Lithium ion is today for mobility. The essential difference of the Elestor technology with conventional batteries is that power (MW) and capacity (MWh) are uncoupled: The Elestor technology is 100% modular and virtually any desired power-capacity combination can be designed, enabling very cost-effective bridging of long periods during which hardly renewable electricity is generated. With a progressing dependency on intermittent energy sources (sun, wind), this property becomes increasingly distinctive, if not decisive, for the energy transition to succeed. Another unique feature is that the Elestor technology can be integrated in hydrogen infrastructures and electrolysers, resulting in a large reduction of green hydrogen production costs. In a competition entered by 600 companies, Elestor is named as one of the 10 most innovative companies in The Netherlands by the Amsterdam Centre for Business Innovation (University of Amsterdam). Fueled by a Series A investment of 30M€, in a round led by Equinor Ventures with also Vopak joining, as well as by agreements with clients strategically adopting its innovative storage technology, Elestor has embarked on an ultra-rapid growth path.

Elestor B.V. has been around for about a decade, and now we’re ready for the third phase of our growth plan. During this phase, we will identify and develop the most robust, cost-effective and desirable engineering solutions that will enable partners and customers to introduce and integrate our technology into their existing and future operations. Or to put it more succinctly; we’re transitioning from a research-based company to an 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 company that will deliver value to our partners and customers, as well as to society more broadly. So far, we’ve basically built the company’s foundations. We’ve done this during two phases: One, as a start-up focusing on 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of hydrogen-based flow battery technologies. Two as an 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 growth company searching for specific technological solutions to complex sets of challenges. This, the third phase in our growth plan, is also the one that will make Elestor B.V. a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. We’re ready to do this because the first two phases of our development and growth plan resulted in the creation of a hydrogen-based, large-scale, long-duration flow battery solution. We have chosen to develop this technology in engineering settings during phase 3 because we believe it is optimal when benchmarked against a complex set of criteria. The technology we will develop in engineering settings during phase three has been carefully selected based on a set of complex criteria, ranging from commercial considerations presented by clients and industry partners, to availability of the required materials, which must be abundant, to scientific, technical and societal criteria. What this means in the real world is this: We have come up with a robust, affordable and scalable way to store electricity produced by solar panels and wind turbines. This will help speed up the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. 𝐓𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: https://lnkd.in/e6RqH5_D

“During tests a record was broken, with the stack showing an impressive current density of 3 Amps/cm2”
From 2020 to the present, the MELODY consortium has actively studied the best possible outcomes in creating a low-cost flow battery with a high energy and power density. This evolved into select test setups focussed on Elestor’s Hydrogen based flow battery, including some set-ups to test cells, some set-ups to test stacks and one set-up to test a complete MELODY battery system. Over the course of the MELODY project Elestor B.V. has welcomed many visitors to its laboratories to see the technology in operation. You can share the experience of visiting the Elestor labs and seeing some test arrangements with this short video. MELODY’s initial idea was to minimise costs by removing the membrane in the cell. During the project the MELODY consortium concluded that this was not feasible and the new objective became to minimise the membrane thickness without sacrificing performance. In the end it showed that a minimal thickness of the membrane is not only defined by its physical strength properties, but also by a balance between crossover, ion conductivity and energy efficiency. Elestor also arranged a special ‘pressure balanced system’ to operate the cells in such a way that the pressure difference over the cells was independent of the pressure swings at the hydrogen side. This system concept showed successful and proved Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL5). It was concluded that this arrangement of Elestor’s flow battery system is feasible for further scale up.”
