A versatile choice for salads and hummus! 🍛 Kidney Beans: These hearty beans have a slightly higher carbon footprint compared to chickpeas, but they pack a punch in stews and chilies. 🥣 Broad Beans: Also called fava beans, they have a comparable footprint to chickpeas and are a great source of plant protein with a unique flavor. 🍲 Lentils: This number shows a higher carbon footprint than the beans above. For this particular example (lentils, dry), our data shows that most of the emissions are from the agriculture process, with deforestation contributing to most of this. A new plant-based fiber that offers a superior texture and lower environmental impact compared to traditional meat substitutes has been introduced by Schouten - Specialist in Plant-Based Protein. The family-owned company's latest product, the Schouten NewTexture Schnitzel, showcases this innovation. CEO Niek-Jan Schouten expressed excitement about the launch, stating, "We're confident that Schouten's NewTextures will be a game changer." The new technology addresses concerns about the energy-intensive texturization process often used in meat substitutes. Schouten's NewTexture Schnitzel is notable for its juicy texture and chicken-like appearance. "Meat substitutes can sometimes fall short in terms of moisture," said Schouten. "Our product retains its juiciness, making it more appealing." Beyond the Schnitzel, Schouten has also introduced mycoprotein-based products and a line called Variations, which offer plant-based options without mimicking meat. 🌱💡 SCHOUTEN UNVEILS NEWTEXTURE TO REPLACE TRADITIONAL TEXTURED PROTEINS When it comes to plant-based meat, one of the biggest pain points for consumers is the texture. For years, many meat analogues have been described as dry, crumbly, mushy, or just unappealing in terms of mouthfeel. It’s why companies are racing to come up with ways to produce meat analogues with whole-muscle structures that better resemble their conventional counterparts. It’s also why this effort is called the “holy grail” of plant-based meat. Globally, the texture of vegan meat products is as important as their animal-derived versions for 75% of consumers – but only about 60% are actually satisfied with it. Similarly, a 1,500-person survey this year found that 42% of Americans are deterred from choosing a meat analogue dish at a restaurant because they don’t think they’ll like the texture. And in Germany, 26% of people say they’d pay more for a plant-based product if it has the same taste and texture as the food it’s hoping to replace. Responding to these needs, Dutch alternative protein pioneer Schouten - Specialist in Plant-Based Protein has come up with a “self-developed” fibre technology, promising enhanced textures in meat analogues. It’s starting with a chicken schnitzel, which is now available for its foodservice customers. Schouten explains that a lot of meat analogues require high amounts of energy and what some feel is “unnecessary processing”. This is why it has developed a novel fibre technology, dubbed NewTexture, which it describes as a “replacement for textured proteins”. In summary, hydrolyzed proteins are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance pet food products by improving nutrition, palatability, aroma, and digestibility. Despite the technical nature of the term "hydrolysis," these proteins are widely used and essential for addressing consumer demand for high-quality, functional pet foods. Personally, I believe a more consumer-friendly alternative could be to label these as 'peptides', making the benefits more accessible to pet parents. Looking ahead, hydrolyzed proteins will play a key role in advancing pet health, innovation, and product performance, making them a cornerstone of functional pet nutrition. Zinnias make wonderful cut flowers and colorful additions to the garden! The F1 Sun series produces masses of large, fully double flowers. Sun Gold and Sun Red are both All American Selection Winners . Cut-and-come-again flower, yielding multiple cuts over the season. Plant height is 24 – 32″ (60 – 80 cm). Available in Cherry, Gold (AAS winner), Red (AAS winner), and Sunshine Mix. Sow: Transplant (recommended) - Sow into 72-cell flats or preferred seedling container 4 weeks before planting out. Cover seeds. A heat mat will help maintain an accurate temperature. Lower temperatures will result in slower germination: 5-7 days at 70-75°F (21-24°C). Do not allow plants to become root bound and avoid disturbing roots; transplant shock or other stress events may cause double-flowering varieties to produce single blooms for a period following stress. Direct seed - Sow 1/4” deep. Succession-sow/plant every 2 weeks for prolonged yields of high-quality stems. Pinching of initial bud or bloom and subsequent deadheading is recommended to encourage strong branching and bloom production.
