🌿 Expert insights at the Sustainable Vegetable Oils Conference 🌿 This morning, our Senior Advisor for Agrocommodities, Heleen Van Den Hombergh, joined an expert panel at the International Sustainable Vegetable Oils Conference in Rotterdam, where over 250 global participants gathered to discuss the future of vegetable oils. 🌍 Heleen shared insights from the recent IUCN report "The Future of Vegetable Oils", of which she is a co-author. Her key message? There are no inherently 'good' or 'bad' oils. The focus must be on selecting the right locations, ensuring responsible management practices and maintaining production scales that balance the needs of nature and other land uses. 🌱🌿 She emphasised that global oil markets are deeply interconnected. Reducing the use of one oil often leads to an increase in another, potentially causing greater environmental harm. That’s why sustainable practices across all oils—including lesser-discussed ones like coconut and olive oil—are critical. Lastly, Heleen highlighted the need to align global consumption with actual needs, to drive more sustainable usage and support the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Only a realistic perspective on the future of plastics leads to sustainable progress Courtesy Wageningen Food & Biobased Research Patrick Gerritsen (Bio4Pack): "Time we start looking at truly sustainable solutions" 'Plastics are here to stay' - researchers emphasize the need for better choices Tholen - 'Only a realistic perspective on the future of plastics leads to sustainable progress', the researchers from the Renewable Plastics program of Wageningen University & Research recently came up with this conclusion. They emphasize that the assessment of the recycling potential of current plastics is too optimistic and that there are limited options to replace ( plastics to be used once with other materials. 'There's clearly a difference here between the reality on paper and a realistic prospect.' Patrick Gerritsen, director of Bio4Pack, is happy with the publication of the researchers. "It's time for us to look at truly sustainable solutions that contribute to a better packaging future. Unfortunately, we still leave our ears hanging too much on conventional parties. The entire Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is a big wash. He assumes that we will use less plastic, but that is absolutely not the case. If we continue as we do now, we will double what we have now by 2050. It only looks at recycling, while universities have found that we always talk about downcycling at first." Patrick indicates that most of the plastic will still end up in the incinerator. "In addition, we can only start recycling 35% in the most optimal case. So 65% still end up in the incinerator. Since the virgin material is cheaper than the recycled material, with all the benefits that entails, no one will make the move. And no alternatives in the form of biobased or compostable are considered. There are really sustainable alternatives available, but for that it is necessary to think out of the box. That just doesn't happen enough and that's such a shame." The specialist in sustainable packaging fears that we will encounter a wall in the future with the current working method. "If you're going to take the road you're going to take right now, is it a dead end and only after decades do you discover that this is another missed opportunity and that bioplastics are still being pushed aside, while this is the only right option for many, many things." #plastic#recycling#planet#urgency#explore#science

Biotech Booster, a Nationaal Groeifonds initiative, is backing our mission to create biodegradable coatings using biologicals! 🎉 Thanks to their support, we’ll press forward in developing innovative biostimulant and microbial coatings to enhance soil and plant health. Biotech Booster is a national program to support commercialization of biotechnology findings in The Netherlands. With the Biotech Booster Level 1 financing (EUR 200,000), for the period of over 1 year we will further work on bio-coatings with impact for the agri-sector. Thank you Corbion! "All good things come to an end". So is my valuable time at Corbion. After 9 years it's time for a change! Because my ambition goes further. I don't know yet what the new chapter in my career and life will look like, but I do know that I want to continue to make an impact – sustainable, visible, with people, by connecting, with humor and creativity. "Making the world a bit more balanced and fair", remains my motivation. But first things first. A big thank you is in place. For everything I have been able to do and learn at Corbion. From setting up and leading teams, strategy, connecting within Corbion and beyond, assisting the business in different continents, getting to know new cultures, setting up expert teams in Asia, Capex projects and litigation in Thailand, projects in China, new ways of working in Japan, I learned and enjoyed it immensely! I have even been able to stand at the cradle of large projects such as the PLA factory and lactic acid factory in Thailand, expansions of factory lines and new lines in the US, Asia and Europe, and setting up the joint ventures that were needed for this. In short, I have been able to develop into an all-round manager with a good feel for the business, sustainability and a well-developed strategic view. Thanks Corbion, thanks! But what I cherish the most are the amazing people I've met, the collaboration, the learning from each other, and the moments where we got off the beaten track. The team building activities, building houses in Cambodia and playing pickleball in Kansas. We've accomplished so much together, laughed and made great memories. With this grateful feeling, it is time for a new chapter. I'm looking forward to meeting new people, cups of coffee and walks in nature to get new inspiration for what this next step will be.
