Amsterdam-based VC firm 819 Capital Partners has acquired and invested in CiMaas BV, a Dutch biotech company specialising in Natural Killer (NK) cell therapy for cancer treatment. CiMaas had filed for bankruptcy in June 2024 due to financial difficulties that hindered its ability to fund critical clinical studies, despite possessing proprietary technology. Following the acquisition, CiMaas reaffirmed its commitment to developing effective, low-side-effect cancer therapies. Yield is a big problem for AAV therapies. New innovation is needed to fix the issue.  But that’s what makes this news so exciting: I’m happy to announce that VVector Bio has been granted, as the lead partner, a funding support of £1.1 million to help solve this challenge.    The collaboration project aims to develop a next generation high-yield producer platform for cell and gene therapy viral vectors - and other complex biologics.   But we aren’t doing it alone.  We’re joined by: - National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada-HHT-Royalmount - Revvity  - Abselion This grant is part of the Canada - UK Biomanufacturing of Biologics and Advanced Therapeutics initiative launched by Innovate UK (part of UK Research and Innovation) and the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP).   It’s been a challenging couple of months waiting for the approval and announcement of these news. Not to mention the long nights of writing and putting together agreements for this collaboration project, but all worth it! This new alliance between a major international academic healthcare center and the Leiden grown Okos Diagnostics has huge potential to form the basis for a significant change in the global healthcare ecosystem including global clinical enduse in hospitals and clinics and R&D in biotech, pharma and academia. Our industry uses enormous amounts of plastic and Okos Diagnostics is on its way towards becoming a company with gamechanging potential to put a stop to this.

Investing in vision: Innovation in retinal therapeutics and the influence on venture capital investment https://lnkd.in/d2QHx_bH by Dr. Dmitrij Hristodorov, Tim Lohoff, Nanna Lüneborg, Geert-Jan Mulder, Simon J. Clark. Highlights: 1. The acquisition of Gyroscope by Novartis for up to $1.5 Billion in 2022, including an upfront payment of $800 million. It was a landmark deal for the founding investor, Syncona Limited, delivering an impressive ~$424 million upfront return. Other investors in Gyroscope, including Forbion, Sofinnova Investments and T. Rowe Price Associates enjoyed a quick return following their investment into the company in 2021. Regrettably, Novartis has recently announced that further development of GT005 has been stopped. In a press release, Novartis states that “this decision was based on a recommendation from the independent Data Monitoring Committee following an overall risk-benefit assessment of available data from the program studies, which concluded futility criteria had been met. Importantly, no new safety signals were identified” 2) Increasingly clinical-stage programs can be developed by biotech companies on a standalone basis, with increasingly larger financing rounds. Between 2004 and today, the average financing round has almost quadrupled from around $17 M in 2004 to around $63 M in 2022 and 2023 3) The likelihood of drug approval for ophthalmic drugs after a positive Phase 2 read-out is ~47% only and compares unfavorably to several other therapeutic areas. The availability of larger funds provided by VCs to run larger Phase 2 b and/or even pivotal Phase 3 studies will allow us to close this potential gap of innovation in the coming future 4) 9 out of the 15 largest financings were for gene therapy companies 5) The surge of investment has been paralleled by a growing appetite from pharma in the ophthalmology sector, highlighted by the most recent mega-deal, the acquisition of Iveric Bio, An Astellas Compan by Astellas for $5.9 billion. Pharma companies have become aware of the enormous impact and financial success they can generate, as showcased by blockbuster anti-VEGF drugs, such as Lucentis and Eylea

Kairos Biotech Ltd are pleased to announce they have received follow-on funding of €1m from Dutch entity EchiumBio Holding BV.   Kairos Biotech management comprises CEO & founder, Dr Mike Bunce, R&D director Ben Passey, Senior Scientist Hayley Hogan and Investor Director Dr Wietse Mulder.   The transaction was executed with legal support from Herke van Hulst and Angela Saldanha at Osborne & Clarke in Amsterdam and Catherine Williams from Keystone Law in London.    The follow-on investment came after the company achieved significant milestones in developing its novel molecules for transplant diagnostics and applications in targeted immunotherapy.   Our approach in transplantation   Successful kidney and other solid organ transplants need to avoid immunological rejection to succeed. Unfortunately, many patients have pre-formed anti-donor T and B cells that restrict the opportunities for transplant. Some patients may wait years for a transplant opportunity due to deleterious anti-donor immunological responses.    Kairos Biotech aims to improve transplant success by developing small molecules that are suitable for both improving diagnostics, and molecularly enhanced to modulate or remove immunological anti-donor responses. We will demonstrate that these ‘designer immunosuppressive molecules’ can interfere and remove the anti-donor responses in a highly-specific and possibly permanent way. This transplant tolerance is expected to be highly beneficial for the transplant of highly sensitized patients. This will enable shorter waiting times for transplant, and potentially improved transplant survival.

🌟 Happy New Year! 🌟 I’m so excited to see what 2025 holds, not just for Salix Sciences, but for me personally. With the big 5-0 on the horizon and preparing for half my nest to be empty, it’s a year of reflection and growth. One thing that has always been central for me is the belief that prevention is better than cure. I truly believe we can manage so much of our health through proper nutritional choices and a healthy lifestyle. We don’t need to be “gym rats” or obsess over every calorie. It’s the small, consistent steps that make the biggest difference. Taking a walk, choosing the apple over the fries, prioritizing movement and nourishment—these are simple yet powerful actions we can all take. Food education is key. If we know better, we can do better. Prevention should be foundational to a functional care system. Relapse Multiple Myeloma (MM) patients urgently need more effective therapies. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) Takeda Molecular Templates publish a nice study on the development of a toxin body (CD38 scFv linked to Shiga-like toxin A) synthesized by ATUM. The toxin body its internalized and the Shiga-like toxin cause cell death to MM cells with minimal toxicity to non-MM cells. Broadview Ventures leads €5M financing for breakthrough therapy for intracranial haemorrhage. Alveron Pharma is pleased to announce a €5.0 million Series Seed extension financing to advance the development of its innovative drug, OKL-1111, for the treatment of intracranial haemorrhage (ICH). The syndicate is led by Broadview Ventures and includes the participation of all existing investors including Sanquin (the Dutch Blood Foundation), Thuja Capital, Waterman Ventures and Oost NL. Alveron Pharma is developing a synthetic anticoagulant and platelet inhibitor reversal agent to prevent haematoma expansion and improve clinical outcomes in patients with ICH. Current therapies for treating ICH patients on anticoagulants have cumbersome regimens, resulting in excessive door to needle times, often exceeding two hours, which exacerbate poor outcomes for these patients. OKL-1111 has a universal mode of action by binding to a downstream clotting factor and a unique product profile enabling administration within 10 minutes of a diagnosing CT scan. In addition, the drug reverses the effects of clopidogrel, a major platelet inhibitor, for which there is currently no antidote. The capital provided from this new financing enables Alveron to accelerate important development activities that support OKL-1111´s readiness for further clinical studies to demonstrate safety and proof-of-concept efficacy in patients.
