Have you ever heard of the golden cage phenomenon? For me, first thing that pops into mind is tech salaries. To explain this let's talk about how it in my opinion relates to compensation tiers in the Netherlands. First let's pull up a great blog by the Gergely Orosz: https://lnkd.in/enaUkC6S. It's worth a full read if you're interested in learning more about tech compensation in the Netherlands. I'll give my short summary here. The blog describes the trimodal nature of tech salaries in the Netherlands. In short, companies active in Netherlands can be put into one of three tiers of compensation for tech: Local Champions (Albert Heijn, Coolblue), Global Players (Adyen, Miro, Nike), and Big Tech (Uber, Booking, Amazon, Netflix). For more examples, check out the blog. Compensation can be wildly different between tiers, where second tier compensation can be 2x of that given in tier 1 and tier 3 can go up to 5x. In my opinion working for one of these "Big Tech" companies can become quite the golden cage. If you're able to get in, working for one of these companies usually comes with very high total compensation (€250k total comp a year is not unheard of check: techpays.eu). In addition these companies usually offer great secondary benefits like catered lunches, free gym access, contribution to health care, etc. And you'll probably be working with the best suited hardware and tech stack for the job. However, it also tends to come with very high internal competition (e.g. for promotions), worse work-life balance (no 9-5 for sure) and generally less job security (PIP anyone?). I'm not even mentioning the fact that with the job market as is, it might not be easy to find another job for a comparable salary. Making it a golden cage. One category I didn't mention but is a honorable mention: start-ups. This is probably the place where you won't get great a great base salary, but might get some meaningful equity. However, given that most startups fail the equity might never be worth something. Hence total compensation is difficult to determine. Therefore, it's a gamble that has a slim chance to pay-off big time. But if you're seeking stability and a healthy work life balance, stay away. It's well known that start-ups can be a stressful place to work that put a high demand on you. Nevertheless, having worked in a startup does give you a unique perspective. In my opinion it's all a delicate balance between many factors, where compensation is just one of them. Having a family for me work-life balance is more important, but this might be dependent on your life stage. My advice, stepping out of a golden cage into something different (entrepeneurship, freelance, startup, local champions) can be great options, it's just a matter of what's important. It’s common for mid-level developers to overcomplicate things that could be simple. The transition from junior to senior involves a lot of learning and applying new concepts, which often leads to over-engineering. I decided to give Strapi a shot and add it as the CMS for my website. As expected, that increased the loading time (you know, it's always a trade-off), so I thought that it was a good opportunity to learn more about Skeletons. My findings so far: • Skeletons should match the size, shape, and layout of the final element—to prevent layout shifts. • Use lightweight animations, and avoid overloading the DOM. • Ensure skeletons are responsive and accessible to all users. • Focus on above-the-fold skeletons for the best-perceived performance. • Test skeleton performance and responsiveness under real-world conditions. #strapi #cms #skeletons #frontend #development #ux

Working at KeenChess as a backend developer has been challenging and has actually taught me a lot. Ups and downs..panic mode but we always end up finding a way to solve the problem! Some weeks ago, I pushed an updated codebase having a microservice with an embedded Kafka consumer (set to run on a separate terminal). After deployment, I realized that the consumer wasn't receiving any event from the auth microservice. I felt it might be a production issue so I talked to our Devops Engineer, John Ojabo, he did checks but nothing changed. I decided to setup kafka locally on my system...just to see if the issue was from my end and guess what? It was🙂. I realized that the kafka consumer was subscribing to the wrong topic name. I changed it, pushed again and it worked! Last week, the frontend dev messaged me about an API endpoint that was throwing a connection refused error. The API was calling a celery task which was causing error but ONLY in production.. Yeah yeah I know, the usual thing we say- "but...it works on my system!!😂" It was clearly a problem with the message broker because the celery terminal was up without errors and the message broker, which is supposed to act as a middleman between the django main process and Celery workers was showing up in the error logs. At first we changed the broker from redis to rabbitmq, still nothing. The DevOps engineer then made some networking adjustments on the Kubernetes pod with respect to the message broker and suddenly the error disappeared. That's how we roll.

I am learning Flask, with the aim of positioning myself as a web programmer again, after a long time dedicated to another field, my other engineering, with projects as a freelancer in programming (mainly Wordpress), yes, but very sporadic and small. I have experience with the MVC pattern (PHP Laravel, 2016-2019), I have experience with Python (I learned it and applied it at a job in 2008, and have used it subsequently), but I did not know how to use this language to make websites. Now is the time. I opted for the Flask framework, because it has a smoother learning curve, and because of the greater control it provides, compared to Django.

I dream of becoming a self-employed developer. A 22-minute video gave me most of the answers I needed. Giovanni shared a video on his profile, where Judith talked about her journey to become a self-employed full-stack developer. In the video, she shares: What sparked her interest in software engineering, The challenges she faced along the way, How she overcame those obstacles. Her experience clarified my journey and taught me valuable lessons for better steps toward my dream. I’d like to highlight some advice from Judith, that can apply to any career path. “Don’t limit yourself” “Prioritize fundamentals” “Don’t expect too high” “Enjoy the sharing” Learning from other's experiences helps me avoid mistakes. GDP per capita between Sweden and Netherlands are quite close. Netherlands (62K USD) Sweden ( 56K USD) However, software engineering salaries are not that close. Sweden considered tech unicorn of Europe but with the weak krona and limited salary bumps software engineers are earning less and less after covid.

Just wrapped up another Kotlin training for a great group of developers at Albert Heijn last week. This time, I ran it with my colleague M. Masood Masaeli. It was hands-on, and we covered the essentials—Object Orientation, Testing, Null Safety, Functional Programming, and Kotlin + Spring Boot. It’s always interesting to see how quickly developers can adapt and apply new concepts. These sessions are a good reminder of how much value we can add by building skills that directly impact our work. I’ve started reading the book 'Eloquent JavaScript' by Marijn Haverbeke. 📖It’s not just a great refresher for the fundamentals of JavaScript but also a chance to see things from a new perspective or at least explained in different words. "Learning Journey: [Eloquent JavaScript] – Update 1"💡 DATA: 💾 Everything is data in a computer's world. 🌍 We can read, modify, and create data. All this data is stored as long sequences of BITS and all fundamentally looks the same. (0's and 1's). 🟢⚪ BITS: 🔢 Bits are kind of two-valued things, usually described as zeroes (0) and ones (1). Any piece of information can be reduced to a sequence of 0's and 1's and represented as Bits. 💡📊 VALUES: 💻 A typical computer's RAM has billions of bits, and a hard disk or an equivalent storage has even more bits. 🛠️ To work in this ocean 🌊 of bits without getting lost, we separate them as chunks that represent pieces of information. 🟨 In JavaScript, these are called values. All values are made of bits, but every value has a type that makes them different. 🔢 Some values are numbers, some are texts , and some are functions 🔧. 🗂️ Values take up space. If we want all values to exist all the time, we will soon run out of space! 🛑 So if we no longer use a value, bits of those values are recycled, freeing up space for new values. ♻️ 👉 Link to second post! Next, she gives a brief explanation of the BEAM, processes, and message passing, followed by explaining how CodeSandbox uses Elixir with only 2 backend engineers, who also maintain the LiveView admin portal. She finishes by stressing out how LiveView allows them to move faster compared to React. CodeSanbox replaced the frontend part to manage teams, subscriptions, permissions, and billing with LiveView because with React, things were getting out of hand.  I am excited and proud to announce that I have become one of the specialists in Pocketbase development and responsible for updating its services in the Middle East region. PocketBase is an open-source backend as a service platform that is shipped as a single executable that can be self-hosted. For you to use PocketBase in production you have to host it yourself. 🎯 SLAYGROUND 2.0: 21-Day Coding Challenge 🚀 Day 14 of 21 Days of Problem Solving ✅ Challenge: Sort an Array of 0s, 1s, and 2s ✅ Difficulty: Easy ✅ Solution: Completed using the efficient Dutch National Flag Algorithm! 🎉 Day 14’s challenge focused on sorting an array containing only 0s, 1s, and 2s. While it may seem straightforward, achieving this in a single traversal required the clever use of pointers and swaps, an excellent application of the Dutch National Flag Algorithm. 💻🔥 It’s always rewarding to revisit and implement such elegant solutions that balance simplicity and efficiency. Thanks to Coding Ninjas and Ninja Slayground 2.0, these challenges are boosting both my coding skills and confidence. Explanation: 1️⃣ Initialize three pointers: low points to the start of the array (to place 0s). high points to the end of the array (to place 2s). mid traverses the array, determining where each element belongs. 2️⃣ If the current element is 0, swap it with the element at low and increment both low and mid. 3️⃣ If the current element is 1, simply move mid forward. 4️⃣ If the current element is 2, swap it with the element at high and decrement high. This approach ensures all elements are sorted in O(n) time with a single traversal. 🚀 💡 Key Takeaways: The Dutch National Flag Algorithm is a simple yet powerful technique for solving sorting problems with constrained inputs.
