This part of Vidya Balan’s interview reminded me of someone. Firstly, what Balan shared in her recent interview is something I deeply resonate with. This interview then reminded me of the Dutch psychiatrist and author who wrote about this in his bestselling book “The Body Keeps the Score”. “Our bodies are not just vessels; they are repositories of wisdom, memory, and intuition.” This concept is known as **Somatic way of knowing answers.** It’s the language of sensations, whispers, and gut feelings. It’s how our bodies communicate truths that our minds might miss. When we pay attention, we tap into a wellspring of answers. Think about it: When you’re faced with a decision, notice how your body responds. Is there a flutter in your chest? A tightening in your stomach? Or perhaps a lightness that lifts you? Your body acts as a living library, storing experiences and insights guiding you to take next actions. This is how you can tap into your intuition: 1. Body Scanning: Take a moment > Close your eyes > Scan your body. Where do you feel tension? Where is there an ease? Trust these sensations — they hold clues. 2. Embodied Breath: Breathe into those areas. Imagine inhaling wisdom and exhaling doubt. Your breath connects you to your inner compass. 3. The Light-Heavy Test: Remember Vidya Balan’s words? Your body will be light or heavy depending on how you feel. Use this as a litmus test. Trust the lightness. 4. Movement as Insight: If you feel stuck - dance, stretch, or walk. Movement unlocks stagnant energy. As you move, answers flow. And that’s how you can start honoring your bodies as allies. When faced with questions, pause. Listen. Feel. I didn't study much but would’ve added automatic doors to keep the heat in and save energy.” It struck me how easily we can overlook small yet impactful design decisions. The Mastermind Behind World’s Greatest Detective🕵️‍♂️ My husband is a huge fan of Agatha Christie, especially of the little Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. He loves the character's self-confidence—after all, Poirot isn’t modest, often claiming he’s the world’s greatest detective. And where does all that confidence come from? The remarkable mind of Agatha Christie! She wasn’t just a brilliant storyteller—she was possibly the world’s greatest researcher for fictional writing. 😊 Every book she wrote was deeply anchored in realism. So much so that when she once asked an archaeologist, “Who is the world’s leading authority on Mesopotamian pottery? I need to ask them a question.” The archaeologist looked at her and said, “You are!” 😂 How did she reach that level of expertise? Through sheer dedication. Thanks to her husband, Max Mallowan, she had access to archaeological digs across the Middle East. Christie didn’t just observe from a distance; she immersed herself in the life of the dig. Her curiosity led her to learn everything….from the processes of unearthing ancient relics to the finer details of the pottery they discovered. She brought humor, authenticity, and extraordinary detail to her descriptions of these sites in her novels, transporting readers into worlds few knew about. Remember, there was no National Geographic or Discovery Channel back then—just Christie, her pen, and her deep well of knowledge. If Agatha Christie could research like that for writing fiction, what does that say about us as business storytellers? How much effort should we put into making our stories come alive? If we want to connect meaningfully with our audience, we need to engage with them on three levels—head, heart, and hand. 1. Head Make them think. Share knowledge they wouldn’t have access to otherwise, and make it interesting and intriguing. 2. Heart Make them feel. Whether it’s about a cause, a product, or data, ignite their passion. 3. Hand Deliver the message in a way that they’ll remember it for a long time and share the gift of your well knit story with others. Storytelling isn’t child’s play. I FAILED. Or did I? It's my Day 12 of the #30DayPromptChallenge from #EscapingTheWellOfSilence by Kim Vermaak of Write Learn and Earn. Although I started 19 days ago. After a disruptive week interrupted my challenge, I was very tempted to give up. But this public commitment played a big part in keeping me accountable... and getting me back on the horse. This is interesting, because my usual response would be (should I admit this?) to simply give up and quietly make all evidence of my #30DayChallenge disappear. As a perfectionist, I really like to see that checkbox ticked every day, so it's really uncomfortable to actually admit that — GASP! — I am human. But when it comes to a big commitment like writing a book, the chances of success are far higher if you skip a day and get back on track than when you give up because things weren't perfect, right? This is the kind of truth I learning a lot about. Will this process result in a book? Let's get the 30 days done first, then we can talk about that. For now I can say that it has been so comforting to return to my morning writing routine after the exciting but disruptive week of intensive working travel. P.S. My writing in this post feels incredibly clunky, which is interesting since this challenge has been all about writing. Right? I take heart in the words of the German-born homeopath who saw me through the many tumbles of childhood. She would simply nod and mumble: "It gets vorse before it gets better." When I moved to the Netherlands 13 years ago, I thought I needed to sign up for a comprehensive language course to understand and learn Dutch grammar really, really well. The first 2 months after the move, I was busy settling in, buying furniture, and finding my way around the city and various Dutch governmental agencies. So, in month three of living in Rotterdam, I asked a new Dutch friend if she could recommend any Dutch grammar classes to me. Her reaction? "A Dutch course? Olivia, you already speak Dutch! You learned it by using it. Not a lot a standard course could add to that now!" Back then, I believed the only way to learn a language was out of a book. But actually, you learn a language by using it. And through interaction with other human beings (no, Duolingo does not really work; at least not for everyone). And by making mistakes. What’s more, my biggest mistakes learning this new language were not grammar mistakes. My biggest fails were cultural fails. And translation fails. Why am I sharing this? Well… If you’re stressed about your accent/pronunciation/grammar, remember you can still deliver awesome projects, even if you forget the 3rd person -s at the end of verbs ;-) Engineers are fantastic at learning English. When one of my mentors recently asked us in a training session to 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. It felt like the push I needed to stop wondering 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 and to take control. The phrase "𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱" has been coming up a lot lately. As well as often being the main caregivers in society; we are still subject to gender stereotypes; which can affect our self confidence making us more risk averse. On top of this, access to capital is more challenging; we are under represented in many professional networks and have fewer role models. Those women who have started businesses to escape the corporate life are now finding they are working a lot more hours for less money than they earned before. At this point many give up. 😞 They are exhausted and frustrated but can’t see a way forward. They can’t see past the start up stage which is inevitably challenging when you are trying to prove your business model and don’t want to commit to bringing in staff until you have got some profit coming in. However, if you have done your homework before launch, have done some financial modelling and scenario analysis and have tested the market, you should feel more confident. You see once you start to grow, build a team and put in systems and processes; that is when you get the rewards for all your hard work. Lesson No. 3 of 2024 - Being diverse means being human This year I had various beautiful opportunities to speak on diversity-related topics. However, I don’t always quite feel authentic in this context. Now I understand why. I've realized that diversity isn't merely about accessibility debates, gender representation in leadership, or disability employment quotas. Diversity is embracing differences, and learning to connect through them. It's about shedding our labels and reconnecting with our true human essence—the core being that exists within each of us, beyond any labels or initiatives. Because we are all fundamentally human. 🌈 Women and men. 🌈 White people and people of color. 🌈 Married and single. 🌈 Parents and childless. 🌈 Heterosexual or identifying anywhere within the LGBTQ community. The list could go on. I’m learning that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what labels I attach to myself, what acronyms I put on my LinkedIn profile, or what title I have on my business card.
