A look back at the world’s first offshore vessel to use batteries for DP3 operations, North Sea Shipping’s offshore construction vessel the North Sea Giant. Rebuilt in 2018 with Wärtsilä serving as integrator, the vessel features an innovative, hybrid power system that can be split into three separate systems and incorporates Corvus Energy battery systems for spinning reserve. Delivering superior redundancy and energy efficiency, battery power allows fewer engines to run during dynamic positioning operations and enables running engines to operate at optimal loads. The groundbreaking design resulted in significant emissions and fuel savings, with fuel consumption reduced by up to 50%, equivalent to an estimated 2 million liters per year. Less engine runtime also contributes to reduced wear and tear and maintenance costs. The North Sea Giant is currently chartered for operation through Q1 2027 by Norwegian-based Ocean Installer, a subsidy of Moreld AS. By 2027, batteries in EU with a capacity above 2 kWh, will need a digital Battery Passport. The passport will store all relevant battery data throughout the entire battery lifecycle, containing detailed information from the entire value chain from battery cells and all the way to recycling. This is important work to enable a scalable EV industry and Corvus has taken an active role as partner in BASE EU: Battery Passport for Transparency & Circularity. Interesting video highlighting the world`s largest battery electric ship currently being constructed by Incat Tasmania for Buquebus. Corvus Energy is proud to have been selected by Wärtsilä Marine to supply the energy storage system for this groundbreaking vessel. The 100% electric lightweight Ro-Pax ferry will have more than 40 MWh of energy storage– four times as big as the current largest installation.
