I have just ended a very good panel discussion at Arendalsuka about the electrification of the boating sector and the technology shift that the maritime industry is facing with focus on fast charging. Splendidly arranged by Peder Tellefsdal at Lydløs. The need or search for emission free operation at sea in the shipping and boating world is somewhat tricky and there is not "one solution fits all". Electrification has many hurdles, marine charging network is one, the weight and energy density of batteries another. Done correct, with a design that matches the need and the operation, battery electric propulsion provides a very attractive solution. For others, wind propulsion / sailing and alternative fuels, like methanol is a better solution. Like always, it depends on the operational profile. At RISE Research Institutes of Sweden Maritime at RISE we are working with a interesting project which was in the spotlight of the panel discussion, the emission free battery electric foiling Sea Rescue boat (https://lnkd.in/dWnAhJaN). It is a massive effort to transform high demand work boats to become emission free. The demands for a sea rescue boat is far different from a pleasure craft of the same size. One of the most important demands is that the boat itself should not be a burden to the crew, but help the crew deliver a better job, rescuing those in need. VESSEL REVIEW: Maritime Partner of Ålesund, Norway recently delivered a new catamaran ferry to local operator Moskenes Shipping, which provides passenger and freight transport services in and around Reine in the northern archipelago of Lofoten. The 19.72- by 6.8-metre (64.7- by 22-foot) 'Brit' has an all-electric propulsion system and capacity for 75 passengers in addition to two crewmembers. The vessel’s operation is in line with a goal of achieving zero emissions for both land and sea transport in Lofoten. The main salon has access from both the fore and aft decks. The lounge has seating for all 75 passengers and handicap/wheelchair space in accordance with local regulations. Several seats are arranged with tables, which makes the boat suitable for both sightseeing and transporting tourists. Full article link in comments.

With the deadline for regulatory requirements for the use of zero-emissions technology at berths in Europe from 2030 fast approaching, Christoffer Ahlström at Manta Marine Technologies emphasises the need for ship owners and operators to proactively plan for compliance. Writing in the latest issue of Bunkerspot, he points out that shore power is likely to be the simplest route to compliance due to the fact that: ⚓ To meet the requirements of FuelEU Maritime, a zero-emissions technology must not produce CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, SOx, nitrogen oxides (NOx) or particulate matter when producing energy. These strict limitations rule out certain green fuels as a route to compliance. ⚓ For example, while the lifecycle GHG emissions savings of green methanol may fit other decarbonisation regulations on a well-to-wake basis, the CO2 produced in its combustion would run afoul of FuelEU Maritime’s rules for power generation in port. ⚓ Fuel cells, on board energy storage such as batteries, and on board renewable power generation from solar and wind are all noted as zero emissions routes to compliance, but their adoption within shipping remains limited, especially in large merchant vessels. ⚓ The use of shore power allows ship engines to be shut off at berth, maintaining power to necessary systems onboard through a physical connection to the port’s electricity grid, drastically reducing in-port emissions. WIND TECH AS A PATH TO COMPLIANCE In the second in a series from Kongsberg Maritime, Oskar Levander explains how a research project has devised a ship concept using conventional fuel, that can meet future compliance targets, with the addition of energy-saving technologies including wind. Ship owners can tackle the prospect of tighter regulation in many ways. The easy part is agreeing that all of these new technologies have something to offer, but the difficulty lies in how to apply this to your vessel, knowing that your investment choice will need to remain relevant for decades. The fundamental target here was to design a vsl, that could comply with the predicted CII regulation throughout its lifetime. For the study, we selected a Kamsarmax bulker of 82,000 dwt. It also represents a vsl type for which a switch to alternative fuel, could become restrictive, in terms of global availability of low-carbon bunker fuels. Central to our study was the development of a ‘super-efficient bulker’, a Kamsarmax vsl equipped with a range of energy-saving technologies. By combining wind propulsion, air lubrication, hull optimisation, and advanced energy management systems, this concept vessel demonstrated significant fuel cost savings of between 40% and 55% compared to conventional designs. One of the key innovations explored in the study was the use of a hybrid wind propulsion system. All manufacturers, those are making wing sails or rotors, only offer their own solution, and each works well in specific conditions. For example, a prevailing headwind gives better results with a wing sail, while rotor sails give maximum benefit in sidewinds. What we chose to do was equip this vessel with two types of wind-assist technology, to get the best of both. So, instead of installing five of one type, we have opted for three rotor sails and two suction wing sails. The combined wind propulsor setup results in larger savings compared to either wind technology being used on its own. The three rotors in the middle are also tiltable to aid cargo handling. Air lubrication, injecting air bubbles into the water surrounding a ship’s hull to reduce frictional resistance, has also gained prominence. While this technology has shown promise, its effectiveness can be limited by the dissipation of air bubbles. The Super-Efficient Bulker addresses this challenge through a novel, one-degree sloping hull design that traps air bubbles – with vertical bilge keels – more efficiently, enhancing the benefits of air lubrication. This project has been a real eye-opener for us. While each element makes a difference, it’s the combination of these technologies, where the real difference lies. Wind and air lubrication are great technologies, but at Kongsberg, with our experience as an integrator, it means we can pull together the best technologies out there, along with our own, and offer something that could offer an alternative destination on the journey to cleaner, more efficient shipping. They can revitalise communities and are much faster and easier to deploy than building a bridge. “We question whether it is right to use the limited resource that is green energy to make fuels that have so little effect?” I applaud Øistein Jensen's provocation and have immense respect for Odfjell SE, but there is a flaw in the basis of the question. Green energy is not the limiting resource. The logic of electrifying everything we can as fast as we can is unequivocally sound, but the factors limiting this are things like grid connections, transmission capacity, EV and heat pump adoption rates, etc. and it’s highly localized. Solar and wind are the most scalable and rapidly growing power technologies the world has ever seen, and we can scale green energy faster than the power sector can absorb it (evidence = curtailment).  So yes, let’s electrify everything we can as fast as we can AND let’s also tackle the next best options. We have the capital and capability to do both! Moreover, the implication that maybe it's not worth the effort because it will have “so little effect” clearly misinterprets every recent #IPCC report. If your house is being threatened by wildfire, do you wait for the fire brigade and air tankers to arrive, or do you pull out your garden hose and get to work? #shipping #decarbonization
