Was lucky to be invited to speak at the NAET summit in Helsinki yesterday, and Montel wrote this article based on my talk: https://lnkd.in/d4XpNzM9 The topics will be further explored in our soon to come long-term power market outlook "The Future of Power". It seems clear that opinions differ greatly when it comes to how electricity consumption will develop in the future, and hence the price of electricity. We have long argued against the view that we are heading towards a power deficit in Norway and the Nordics within a few years.

Today had a presentation at Montel Group's Finnish Energy Day. I was given a topic "From coal to SMR. Transforming the energy supply of Helsinki" Our journey from coal to SMR can be seen very simply as changhing one technology to other. But reasoning is more complex and so is the journey as well. We have lived decades in fossil economy. It has quaranteed fairly steady and low energy prices. Climate change mitigation urges us to end the fossil economy era, but that does not happen without systemic change. At the moment new investments to power sector are directed to wind energy and solar power, and that results very volatile power market price. Volatility have considered not to be desirable and many misses the good old days with steady marketprices. Volatility is not a problem rather an opportunity! Our aim at Helen is to increase our flexibility cababilities via technology (like batteries), also better balancing our own production and consumption (electrification of heating brings huge potential) and digitalization (opportunities in treading and customer interface). But how about SMR's. Those we need in 30's when we aim to phase out combustion-based energy production by 2040.

Exciting news from Sweden! Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB has received an environmental permit to build and operate its deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark and the encapsulation plant in Oskarshamn. This is a significant step forward in managing nuclear waste safely and sustainably 👏👏👏 . There is international scientific consensus that deep geological repositories are the best way we know to keep future generations and our environment safe. As Canada plans its own deep geological repository, it's inspiring to see continued global progress 🌍 . Nuclear waste is not the issue many people think it is. Exciting times are ahead in the energy sector, with European societies exploring a massive expansion of the power grid at a speed unprecedented. The message from NKT was clear at the annual conference on energy in Denmark, hosted by Danish Industry: The European cable industry is dedicated to the task and is investing significantly in additional production capacity and capabilities to accommodate the increasing demand. Investments require long-term visibility, which means that early, long-term contracts are the way forward to secure the right amount of production capacity and capability when it is needed.

Energy is and should be at the forefront of European decarbonisation Henrik Tegnér Tegner and I wrote an opinion piece for Dagens Industri on what truly needs to happen for Sweden and Europe as a whole to reach its decarbonisation goals. In summary, our mains points are on: 1.       Policy: Setting clear directions and sector-specific strategies to phase out fossil fuels. 2.       Financing: Utilizing financial incentives effectively and reducing costs, for example through a global carbon price. 3.       Innovation: Scaling up existing technologies and driving down costs for solutions like hydrogen and offshore wind power. At this week’s Nordic Business Forum, Mario Draghi essentially made the same remarks. His points from the recent Draghi report, emphasised the need for effective policies, increased investment and innovation to ensure Europe’s competitiveness. So we all have some homework to do. The decision-makers across all levels in Europe to make the tough calls to truly decarbonise our energy systems, for the industry to make those investments into new technologies and decarbonisation solutions and for us in the industry to make them cost-effective and innovative. Admittedly, I am a nerd when it comes to energy. I love the topic! After more than 20 years in the industry, there is always more to learn. This week, we had the pleasure of hosting Equinor's Chief Economist, Eirik Wærness, in Washington DC. Every time I listen to Eirik I absorb more, and he reminds me that there is no free lunch when it comes to balancing energy, climate, and economic and social imperatives. All of this at a time where geopolitical tensions are high and trust across (and within) borders is challenged. Eirik shared some views from our Energy Perspectives report on these topics with Larissa Lee Beck at the Atlantic Council. We can all relate to energy in our daily lives and sometimes, in certain parts of the world, take its abundance and reliability for granted. However, the complexity of energy systems can be overwhelming. How will we supply a growing global population with increasingly clean, affordable, and secure energy? Can we combat energy poverty and, at the same time, achieve our emissions targets? There are no silver bullets, no black and white answers, no short-term fixes. These questions require an open and honest dialogue about these complexities, trade-offs, and actions needed to meet multiple societal goals.

We’re growing our presence in the Swedish renewables market! Danske Commodities has signed a balancing agreement for 277 MW power with Arise AB and Foresight Group. The power will be generated by Kölvallen, a new onshore wind farm which will be operational next year. When operational, the wind farm will be able to provide app. 360,000 Swedish households with renewable electricity, supporting the overall energy transition and Sweden’s ambition to reach 100% renewable electricity by 2040. With the Kölvallen wind farm soon in our portfolio, we deliver on our strategic ambition to grow our presence in the European renewables market. More to come! Exciting progress in our Waste-to-Energy CCS project! This week, we proudly announced that Vantaan Energia Oy is moving forward to the next phase of our Waste-to-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project! Earlier in the week, me and Hanna Pitkänen had insightful discussions with key officials and policymakers at the European Parliament and Directorate-Generals (DGs) about the enormous potential of this project. What could this mean for Finland and beyond? - Boost recycling rates across Finland ♻️ - Ensure only non-recyclable waste is used in incineration 🔥 - Capture CO2 emissions from the incineration of non-recyclable waste 🌱 - Provide waste heat to heat up 90% of the buildings in Finland’s 4th largest city This innovative project could redefine sustainability in waste management and energy production, but we can’t do it alone. Exciting news indeed! Finland is rich with suitable locations for clean industrial investments - such as #Rauma. This is another good example of our Fortum strategy implementation. Reliable electricity network, availability of clean electricity at scale and easy/fast permitting processes - key ingredients for new #industrial #decarbonisation investments.

The Green Transition is happening in Northern Sweden - there is not better conditions anywhere in Europe to create this transition. The industrial clusters together with the municipality of Luleå with their companies Luleå Energi, Luleå Harbour etc, and the region of Norrbotten is paving the way for a massive gren transition. It is not easy and it is not given and the conditions needs to be right for investment decisions. But if we do not all believe that this will happen and if we do not work together- it will not happen. Happy to participate today at the large conference hosted by the Chamber of Commerce in Norrbotten - “Norbottens handelskammare” to give mine and Uniper’s perspective on the Green Transition.
