It strikes me that attaching to scenarios as articles of faith is blinkering our governance system. A governance system based on scenarios can feel safe. But scenarios are not predictions. It is too safe to assume that they might be - in seeking safety, we ignore reality and make catastrophe more likely.. #governance #SSPs #SDGs #climateleadership

A sustainable and resilient society can occur if we transcend traditional sectoral governance via governance literacy. The gravity of sectoral governance must be overcome so we can take the first step into that future that seems so far out of our collective reach.

Never before has so many diverse organizations converged around common problems with common objectives. Unwittingly, this causes the collaboration paradox where new governance-related conflicts emerge that stall solutions. Meta-governors will be the multi-sector problem-solving facilitators of the near future that can unravel the governance mess and align the entities’ activities. Meta-governors will understand how actor types and governance styles can be formulated to best resolve technical, scientific, political, and socioeconomic (wicked) problems). They will be considered social magicians 😏 as much of the magic is hidden.

Must read! As we all continue to double down on our efforts to invest in reducing GHG emissions – this is a timely and welcome publication by Oxford Net Zero and BSI (an update to their earlier research) which assesses 37 (!!!!) voluntary resources used internationally (by non-state players) to guide net zero action. Great to see strengthened convergence amongst various tools and resources so we’re slowly all getting on the same page – but still so many gaps! So many areas could benefit from greater alignment!! We all know it - ESG needs to be more than an acronym or a 300 page report. Sometimes we need strong language and to call a spade a spade to sum up the lack of action. This article talks about the need for a 'radical shift towards “competitive sustainability” and a corporate mindset shift to view sustainability as a matter of competitiveness, not responsibility. And I got to tell ya - it makes a whole lot of sense. ESG is dead. Long live ESG (ft.com)

Much of the focus of #Sustainability and #ESG practitioners is spent deep in the evolving reporting and regulatory landscape, especially in the West. And yet, most of the leverage for #decarbonization (as but one sustainability challenge / opportunity) is in the East (and is in action, not reporting). China now represents 30% of global carbon emissions. Notwithstanding the caricature of China, that central planning assures goal delivery, weak governance and a prioritized focus on GDP growth have historically belied the country’s image (for more on this topic please read Jonathan Watts superb book “When A Billion Chinese Jump”…though it dates from 2010, it remains a brilliant tour through the Provinces of China and the environmental impacts of the nation). Nonetheless….conflicting signals are emerging from China that can lead one to become optimistic about their (thus the world’s) potential to decarbonize. More specifically: 🇨🇳China is likely to miss its 5 year plan for 2025 targets for carbon intensity reduction (-18%) in part due to a lack of rain (for hydro) and the resulting increase in fossil fuel sources of primary energy (see feedback loop). 🎯 However, “for the 15th five-year plan period starting in 2026, China will set targets for overall volumes of emissions” rather than just intensity targets. 🛢️"In the space of less than a week, China has overturned years of reticence to begin setting hard targets for carbon emissions, announce ambitious goals for provincial renewable energy consumption, and established a multi-year plan to strengthen its electricity grid. Its top planning agency has also laid out measures to beef up how industries measure their carbon footprints.” (from a recent Bloomberg article) Emissions in China fell 1% in the second quarter, the first quarterly drop since the end of the pandemic. One other piece of news from the East. "Samsung Electronics revealed its newest solid-state #battery that has a 20 year lifespan, can power EVs for up to 600 miles, and only takes 9 minutes to charge up. Mass production of these batteries is planned for 2027 and the hope is that the more effective batteries will drive down the costs of EVs further." Encouraging. A Call for Simplicity in Sustainability 🌍 Sustainability doesn’t sell on its own. While I understand the EU’s intent behind regulations like #CBAM and #EUDR, the complexity often overlooks the realities SMEs face. Many believe that all companies have endless resources to navigate these challenges, which is far from the truth. Without regulatory frameworks, sustainable practices struggle to gain traction. Sustainable products typically carry higher costs, largely due to tracking and compliance administrative burdens. Instead of delaying regulations, #EU #policymakers should reflect on the implementation challenges they impose. We need straightforward, efficient solutions that can be realistically adopted by all businesses, not just major players. Let’s work towards practical approaches that balance sustainability with the capabilities of companies at all levels. It’s time to come back to reality and prioritize what’s feasible! 💡💪 #Sustainability #EURegulations #SMEs #BusinessChallenges

Climate change affects us all, and the latest research on climate science gives a stern warning and a call for immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the catastrophic consequence of climate change. It's somewhat ironic (maybe intentional), given today is the final day (of an incredible short consultation period) to submit on the Government's plans to repeal the ban on new #petroleum exploration permits, that the first recommendation from the report centres on "...incentivising investment in the long-term interests of New Zealanders". It would strike me that a good way of minimising long-term costs is to avoid investing in things that will both exacerbate those climate and natural hazard risks, and will require further costs to manage and decommission as the sector inevitably declines. Fascinating discussion on Green Alliance's webinar on what people really want from a greener fashion industry and what this means for government and business, alongside Libby Peake and Alex Proudfoot, and chaired by lucy siegle. We covered two pieces of research from Green Alliance's Circular Economy Task Force and PwC, which between them covered two key topics for progress to be made in this area 1. What the public want from industry and government 2. How reuse can be economically viable My key takeaways from the session were 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 The public want change and made it clear through Green Alliance's research that reuse and reduction targets are more important then recycling to them. Which shows that people can see beyond recycling, and understand that we need to change our consumption habits, and want government and brands to help them. 👕 An item can retain more value depending on how it's resold - platforms that include processes of quality checks and repairs generate up to 5 x more value for the same items. However 📈 We are owning more pieces of clothing and using them less. Despite 25% of our clothing being reused in some way in the UK, the global growth of clothing production has outstripped GDP, and the average number of times an item is used is falling. We discussed the roles and levers that both government and brands have when it comes to create a more circular and sustainable approach to our clothes, BUT it was great to hear that most of the changes brands have and are making to bring more reuse and repair into their offer, are the result of what their customers are asking of them.
