I was educated at Peking University (B.H., 2005. Ph.D., 2011), and a faculty member at Department of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine of Peking University now. My research and teaching are centered around the medical and cultural history of ancient China, especially 3th-13th centurys. In recent five years, I also start to work on the formation of “modern” historiography on ancient/“traditional” medicine and other knowledge in Republican China, from a trans-national or global perspective.

This paper proposes to explore the formation of a discipline named Chinese medical history in the... more This paper proposes to explore the formation of a discipline named Chinese medical history in the early half of 20th century through a case study of a medical historian, Chen Bangxian, and his writings. Chen gained knowledge about recent trends in world medical history in his local world indirectly, when the thinking of historians in the German-speaking countries spread to other Western countries, to Japan, and finally to China. The article explores ways to understand the interaction between knowledge and historiography in the early half of 20th century in a global context, and reveals how a historiography which both embraced world trends and historians with limited transnational background at the same time created a new “modern” way to write medical history in Republican China.

This article analyzes the ways in which Zuo Ya weaves a network of concepts around empiricism, and builds a historical and intellectual ground to use these concepts.

P.3287, a Dunhuang manuscript belonging to the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale of France... more P.3287, a Dunhuang manuscript belonging to the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale of France, is the middle piece without the beginning or the end of an original manuscript. There are 149 lines remaining in the current manuscript. Previous research on this manuscript tended to consider it as five medical books written in one manuscript. This article argues this manuscript should be taken as a medical book in the making. Detailed research on it reveals the reproduction of medical books and the reconstruction of medical authority in Medieval China.

This is a review article on recent scholarship on the medical history of Song dynasty. Previous s... more This is a review article on recent scholarship on the medical history of Song dynasty. Previous scholarship considered Song dynasty as a major time of transition of Chinese medicine, and took the influence of waves of epidemics, the emperors’ interests on medicine, the involvement of literati in medical books and knowledge, the transition from manuscript culture to the woodblock print, and the interaction between medicine and religious healing as the major factors of changings. This article tries to provide several reflections on current narratives on the medical history of Song dynasty.

The Historical Context and Canonicity of Grand Basis of Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon in Early Tang 唐初医经《黄帝内经太素》的历史语境

This article tells two twisted but distinct stories, one about the canonicity of a medical book, ... more This article tells two twisted but distinct stories, one about the canonicity of a medical book, and the other about the historical context of the reading and using medical canons in the same period. This canon, which gained magnificent authority in the woodblock print period and the modern world, was at the margin in the period it was written. It was a tiny part of an enormous cultural project sponsored by the empire and hidden in court library with other thousands of volumes. However, it reflected the bigger picture as a mirror at the margin: why was a medical canon included in the imperial cultural project? How did cultural trends in imperial court and bureaucratic system effect on the medical canon making and medical knowledge? These questions intrigued the other story. The medical knowledge and its canons were in the intersection. Canonicity from the community of medical masters and book giving-gaining ritual was replaced by textual characters and teaching methods imitating Confucian classics in the imperial court and school system. Some social groups were excluded from the process of rebuilding canonicity, for their social status or gender.

Zhubing yuanhou lun 諸病源候論 (Treatise on the Origins and Systems of all Diseases), compiled at the ... more Zhubing yuanhou lun 諸病源候論 (Treatise on the Origins and Systems of all Diseases), compiled at the decree of the Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty (581-618 C.E.). In this text reading workshop, Dolly Yang investigates the development during the Sui dynasty (581-618 C.E.) of a particular tradition of exercises known as daoyin 導引. Daoyin literally means guiding and pulling. It works on the qi, the vital force in all living beings, to create a harmonious condition within. It often involves stretching and contracting the body and limbs, uses breath and intention to 'pull' deviant qi out of the body, and self-massage, thereby restoring or enhancing harmony and good health. Her analysis focuses on changes in the interpretation, significance and practices of daoyin, and the way the term and its practices change in different contexts. Chen Hao revisits the debate on authorship of Treatise on the Origins and Symptoms of all Diseases from records of tomb inscriptions, and tries to find a book history of this medical manual in a historical and cultural context of producing books in Sui court. Moreover, they raise questions about how to understand a medical manual between cultural practices, producing, reading, citing and copying it, and bodily practices recorded in it.

Whose " Tradition " : Chinese Medicine, Modernity and Historiography (April 27 th , 2016 NRI Lunch Talk）

Inspired by Prof. Miranda Brown's revealing new book entitled " The Art of Medicine in Early Chin... more Inspired by Prof. Miranda Brown's revealing new book entitled " The Art of Medicine in Early China: The Ancient and Medieval Origins of a Modern Archive " , this talk would like to explore the formations of both " Tradition Chinese Medicine " and modern historiography of Chinese medicine, and how they integrated into each other historically. Chen Hao would like to focus on the year of 1914. In this year, two young scholars from different continents published their articles, which were considered as landmarks of writing medical history of China in a modern way: Franz Hübotter published " Berühmte chinesische Aerzte des Altertums " , and Chen Bangxian's article turned into the preface of his famous book, Chinese Medical History(《中國醫學史》). Comparison of these two articles seemingly reverse our understanding of Eastern/Western and traditional/modern, why did a Chinese medical historian embrace " world trends " , when a German sinologist insisted on translating bibliographies from ancient Chinese authors and embedded them into his writing. However, there is more than that. How did Chen Bangxian transform history of medical institutions and medical regulations into this new paradigm called history of social status of physicians? By highlighting " whose " , we not only demonstrate controversial but spiraled relationship between Eastern/Western, global/local, traditional/modern, but also draw attention to agenda, creativity and writing environment of individual writers, as actors of writing practices as well.

However, reassessing these familiar themes with new concepts, sometimes from other disciplines, can shed light onto overlooked or forgotten aspects of them. For example, there are various things stored in the utility room of medical history – drugs and the materials used to produce them; medical apparatus; medical books and manuscripts; and the human body. Studies of " material culture " keep our eyes from being blindfolded by the material and symbolic surface, and maintain our focus on exploring the meanings things hold for people who handle them. This statement can also be applicable to the concept of " bodily practice " , which encourages us not to limit our thinking about the body merely to anatomy or a functional organism, but rather examine the body as a cultural construction and a site of interactive agency. However, for most historians, the medical text is the medium, and sometimes obstacle, to understanding things and the body in the past. How do we determine the meaning of a medical text? Benefitting from philosophy, anthropology, linguistics and literary criticism, we have started to explore how texts and their meanings are related to authors, audiences and contexts. This workshop would like to raise two questions: first, what kind of insights will be sparked off by the encounter of these approaches and the field of Chinese medical history? Second, can we provide a reflective perspective on concepts by negotiating them

Panel Abstract This panel explores the formations of both modern Chinese medicine, including mode... more Panel Abstract This panel explores the formations of both modern Chinese medicine, including modern biomedicine in China and " Traditional Chinese Medicine " , and modern historiography of Chinese medicine, with the aim to reveal how they integrated into each other historically. Chen Hao will focus on the year of 1914 when two young scholars from different continents published articles, which were considered as landmarks of writing medical history of China in a modern way: Franz Hübotter's " Berühmte chinesische Ärzte des Altertums " , and Chen Bangxian's preface of his famous book, Chinese Medical History(《中國醫學史》). These two articles reverse our understanding of Eastern/Western and traditional/modern: why did a Chinese medical historian embrace " world trends " , when a German sinologist insisted on translating bibliographies from ancient Chinese authors and embedded them into his writing? How did Chen Bangxian transform history of medical institutions and medical regulations into this new paradigm called history of the social status of physicians? Lena Springer takes up CHEN Bangxian's role and introduces medical historians in China who are his students. Oral history and the activities of medical historical associations reveal their memories, on the one hand, and scholarly activities, on the other hand, both shedding light on a feature of the 1950s in China that contributes to the rewriting of overly campaign-driven PRC history and medical history of that period. Pi Kuo-Li's paper explores the significance of history of western medicine in Republican China. By analyzing introductions and translations in the early period of the twentieth century, he demonstrates opinions and debates on writing medical history and teaching medicine from communities of Chinese medicine and of Western medicine. Medical history symbolized part of civilization and development in a state, and consequently reading and writing medicine's history would reveal a brighter future for medicine. Moreover, history of western medicine, mirrored not only what should be done in the future of Chinese medicine, but it also encouraged communities of Chinese medicine to find their own history. Natalie Köhle presents a specific example of such medical historiographic scholarship and introduces the stance of Chinese and Japanese authors on a specific body fluid and the question of its (un)changing importance due to historical change.
