Something I’ve only just come to appreciate is how far Design Thinking has infiltrated user-centred design practises. Take Experience Mapping. Under UCD this was a great way to communicate a lot of pretty complicated qualitive and quantative data and share insight. It took significant amounts of time to put together. Design Thinking has essentially turned Experience Mapping into an ideation workshop where we get a bunch of people with variable knowledge of the customer to imagine and “empathise” so we can come up with new design opportunities. This now seems to be the prevalent understanding of what Experience Mapping is. But it’s just a way of capturing informed guesses, it’s not really UCD. I’m not “against” Design Thinking but it’s important to be intentional. If we have little time, low risk and we’re exposing our work to the customer somewhere else in the process it might be ok but don’t mistake this approach for proper evaluative research.

We all know how extremely challenging the world is now for junior designers. Many talented individuals aren’t given a chance to find a job or freelance project. Every crisis, like the modern Tech Winter, temporarily disrupts the junior market, but things usually stabilize eventually. However, this time it's different. The generative AI revolution, as well know, has worsened the situation by automating tasks traditionally assigned to juniors. As a result, many young designers, some potentially more gifted than current leaders, aren’t given a chance to enter the industry. That really s*cks, and the community needs to do something about it. ———————————————————————— In my new article, I share some ideas on what can be done: ➡️ Industry gatekeepers, such as design leaders in mature teams and agencies, along with influencers, should revise the junior role. ➡️ Educators should update design courses and other resources accordingly. Junior designers shouldn’t wait for change and should start adapting to the modern market: ➡️ High-maturity teams are more likely to hire juniors—Google has already posted ads. ➡️ As AI automates some tasks, juniors should continue learning traditional skills while also embracing AI. I've seen so many posts about the changes in our industry this year and how AI and expectations from business is morphing the way we work in the design industry. At the end of may I took part in the UX Research workshop led by Ana Cláudia Dias through EDIT. - Disruptive Digital Education. This time allowed us to get hands-on and practise some of the biggest challenges faced when planning each step of #UXresearch. ✨ Questioning, organising and planning the research value are important processes that help companies define what they want to achieve. ✨ Research must generate actionable knowledge. Just think of the question: What are you going to do with data? What decisions will be made in the future as a result of the research? ✨ There are many methods of psychology that we can use, but one or more may suit your problem. The challenge is to find the best combination or to be creative to achieve the research goal. ✨ Huge databases can be another problem if the data is not useful for research. We should check why or how they are being collected. ✨ If nothing is being measured, think about doing it. Measurement allows us to see how effective improvements are compared to old solutions. ✨ Without the right people, we can't get the right answers. And moderating is more about listening, empathising and being available to receive than talk. ✨ Analysing, transcribing, identifying, relating and coding is work that take time. It's a challenge to write the right words, so it's all right rephrasing again. ✨ The presentation of the results must be understandable to the type of audience or maturity of the company. And don't leave your research without recommendations as they are the guiding thread for what to do next. Overall, was a pleasure time that combined a lot of sharing experience and I'm very grateful to continue reviewing and learning 🚀
