Attending industry conferences often involves significant costs, from booth fees and travel expenses to the time investment required for preparation and follow-up. So, is it worth it? While the initial costs may seem high, the long-term benefits can be substantial. Attending conferences provides invaluable opportunities for: 1. Networking: Connecting with industry leaders, potential partners, and investors. 2. Knowledge Sharing: Learning about the latest trends, technologies, and best practices. 3. Brand Building: Increasing brand visibility and establishing your company as an industry leader. 4. Inspiring Innovation: Gaining new perspectives and sparking creative ideas. Are we expecting too much from developers? Thank you to Nuno Mateus-Coelho, PhD, for asking this during our fireside chat, and to everyone at #websummit who joined! Today’s engineers are being asked to wear many hats—not just developing the system, but handling deployment, security, QA, and more. There is A LOT they need to “get right.” It’s like expecting someone building a house to be a fantastic architect, contractor, every tradesperson, and the inspector all at once. I think these demands are here to stay, and we need to make it feasible for one person to wear all these hats productively: it needs to be easier to “get it right.” I shared a two-step approach, one we make possible with Semgrep: 🔹 Provide the right building blocks—Equip your team with secure, performant primitives and abstractions tailored to your organization. Start with essentials like authentication/authorization, role-based access control, and database access. These create a secure-by-default environment where developers don’t need to know every detail to build safely; they just need to use your primitives. To continue the house analogy: it’s like being given fire-resistant materials by default—a secure foundation without needing all the science. 🔹 Provide just-in-time guidance—It’s easy to overlook best practices or critical details when moving fast. A co-pilot or automation layer can provide just-in-time guidance, nudging teams toward best practices right when it’s needed most. Think of it like lane-keeping assist for coding: it helps developers stay on track or make intentional changes when needed. We also discussed the evolving role of security engineering, which I believe will focus increasingly on creating secure infrastructure and reusable tools to support developers across teams. I see security teams becoming engineering teams. Lastly, when asked about Semgrep, I shared what excites me most right now: our new Assistant Memories feature in the Semgrep AppSec Platform. Our vision? Level 4 autonomy for code security—a self-driving platform that proactively manages and enhances security, reducing the need for constant oversight. After spending a few days in Lisbon at Web Summit, I’m still processing everything I saw and heard. It was my first time at the event, and it was incredibly inspiring to feel the energy of thousands of innovators, startups, and thought leaders all under one roof. A few key themes really stuck with me—some that confirmed my expectations and others that left me questioning. Here are my top takeaways: 1. AI Everywhere, But Lacking Depth AI for sure dominated the summit, but not all of it was substantial. Many ideas seemed to exist just for the hype. According to Microsoft we’re in the 3rd Industrial Revolution, and it’s time to focus on building the infrastructure AI needs to truly transform industries. 2. AI’s Role in Managing Information Overload The internet is drowning in data. AI is emerging as the solution to organize and extract value from this flood of information. Generative AI as a B2B search engine feels closer to reality than ever. Accio (www.accio.com) - the world's first AI sourcing engine by Alibaba.com. A game-changer for global trade and a great example how Generative AI can be applied. 3. Speculation vs. Execution While there’s no shortage of bold ideas about AI’s future, clear roadmaps are missing. The real opportunity lies in execution and solving tangible problems. 4. Data is Everything The rule is simple: “Garbage in, garbage out.” High-quality, well-managed data is critical for building effective and inclusive AI models. 5. No-Code Innovation No-code platforms are breaking barriers, empowering people without coding skills to create and innovate. This democratization is reshaping software development across industries. Today we can all build No-Code websites (and many other things). What will be next? 6. Automotive Industry MIA Surprisingly, the automotive sector was noticeably underrepresented at the summit—a missed opportunity for an industry where AI could drive significant change. Beyond autonomous vehicles, AI can transform the commercial side by automating sales, optimizing pricing, and delivering personalized customer experiences. Companies like AutoBrief, Phyron AI and Preskok are already leading this transformation, offering platforms that streamline vehicle management and enhance business growth through AI-driven solutions. It's time for the industry to embrace these advancements and catch up with others already leveraging AI. 7. Tech and Sustainability Sustainability wasn’t just a buzzword—it was a central theme. From clean energy to green financing, companies embracing green tech are setting the bar for future innovation. Final Thoughts Web Summit 2024 highlighted AI’s vast potential but also the need for thoughtful execution and collaboration. Now is the time to focus on building the foundations for these technologies to thrive. What were your key takeaways?
