The PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite

Being a sedate swinger of the driver can make you the object of derision.

Modern golfers – even hackers – take enormous delight in trying to hit tee shots into the next county.

Many average golfers, however, don’t swing with the speed of the pros. Instead they focus on indiscriminate swipes.

And they find it incredibly funny when others give their drives more of a gentle persuasion from the tee peg – an invitation to find the fairway rather than an instruction, if you will.

Historically, technology has favoured helping the rugged hitter.

But the new PXG Ultra Lite is here for the smooth operator and his polite waft at the ball.

Let’s find out more about it.

Where does it fit among the PXG product?

It’s from the Black Ops Range, it is the third driver in the range and is the freshest addition.

How are the visuals?

It’s typical of the range: black, brooding and sexy.

In contrast to the other drivers in the range – which have weights at the toe or heel as part of the Precision Weighting Technology – the Ultra Lite does what it says on the tin by saving on weight and transferring the centre of gravity back in the head. The one weight socket is at the rear with the option to add preferred weight.

Let’s talk technology.

It features PXG’s proprietary AMF Technology. That means an optimised variable thickness design so that the face produces an increased ball speed for extra distance.

The non-uniform bulge and roll face is refined and manufactured consistently through robotic polishing to adjust the horizontal and vertical curvatures across the face strategically.

This face design gives enhanced forgiveness for off-centre hits.

And the specifications?

The PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite is definitely light weight at just 189 grams – fully 14 grams lighter than the standard PXG Black Ops driver.

Clubhead mass can be adjusted from 179 grams and 196.5 grams with Precision Weighting Technology.

That single weight port gives a deeper centre of gravity to aid forgiveness and consistency as well as enhancing stability.

And materials?

We’re talking high-strength composite that is made from a high-grade carbon fibre. That builds on the weight distribution to increase MOI and add to that push of the centre of gravity lower and further back.

What do PXG say?

Bob Parsons, founder of PXG says: “Whether you play like a pro or an average Joe, we’re committed to having a high-performance setup that will help you play your best and have a good time. The expansion of the PXG Black Ops Driver Collection to include a lightweight option is case in point. There are a lot of players out there who will benefit from this clubhead design, and we’re thrilled to give them what they need.”
