I became both a producer and a CEO. Here's how it happened ↓ Part of my career success comes from dual expertise. My journey started at LoadMe as a game designer. Within a year, I was Head of Studio, essentially doing the work of a CEO. At LoadMe, I wore many hats: • Client Relations • Project Production • Partner Collaboration Understanding the "why" and "who" behind my game creations was essential. While I dream of crafting a super hit, my goal is to build meaningful gaming experiences that resonate with players. When I founded UGI Studio, my role expanded as our team grew to over 40 members. Despite my CEO duties I remain deeply involved in game development You might be wondering. Aren't these roles completely different in dynamics? And how does wearing both hats benefit our clients? Game Industry Ecosystem ♻️ Yesterday, during dinner with three remarkable individuals from the Swedish game industry in Stockholm, we sparked a discussion about the current challenges in game industry education. We talked about how there are currently too many educational programs, and that many game industry teachers end up getting jobs themselves instead of helping students secure employment, leaving their teaching roles. Additionally, we highlighted the significant gap in the ecosystem—soon, we'll have an influx of newly graduated students who lack the necessary experience to be fully prepared and responsible candidates for companies. This is where organizations like Spelkollektivet and initiatives similar to game jams, summer game camps play a crucial role. They function like boot camps, where students can acquire practical skills necessary to become game developers, regardless of the category. I believe we will soon need more places like Spelkollektivet, where students can learn teamwork, hone their skills, and work on several actual projects. These experiences will help them build real portfolios and sharpen their raw talents. Moreover, such environments enable students to form valuable relationships, potentially leading to the creation of their own companies/startups/consult and freelance. Here are some suggested solutions to help solve this issue: 1. Enhanced internships and apprenticeships 2. Project-based learning 3. Industry-driven curriculum 4. Boot camps and workshops 5. Portfolio development 6. Networking opportunities 7. Career services 8. Soft skills training 9. Continuous learning 10. The Heart Behind the Warhammer: Fatshark AB is building a dream team, one developer at the time Meeting the recruiting stars behind the hiring success On one of our Stockholm trips Josua and I got a glimpse into life at Fatshark. If you haven’t heard of Fatshark before, they are the creators of the Warhammer series. The latest one being Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Their 180 people team design, develop and publish high-profile games for PC and consoles. In today's crazy climate they are one of the unicorns who never had any layoffs. Something they take pride in (as they should!). They are consciously building their staffing strategies to keep it that way 🌟 On this visit we sat down with absolute recruitment powerhouse Aleksandra Grozdanović and rising star Rachel Raschke and talked about recruitment and staffing strategies. But before we go into that, I just need to mention the office. I absolutely love their office 😍 Plants everywhere (even in the ceiling!) And shark plushies (of course!) in every corner. If you are looking for a warm, welcoming and relaxed environment, give Fatshark a visit. Comfortably seated in a nice conference room with a cup of tea we talked about The challenges of hiring for onsite ↳  Relocation is a lot of work ↳  and a personal risk for the developer if the trial period doesn’t end with a hire. Aleksandra has ideas to mitigate this, ie a multiple step process with the first three months remote. The challenges of hiring for a fast paced environment like game development ↳  Projects still need senior people “yesterday” ↳  but  most of them have three months' notice. Hard nut to crack. The key is a good employer brand and ensuring people know about you and want to work with you. Meeting Aleksandra it’s easy to understand why developers get a good first impression of Fatshark. She is just super-nice. And good at what she does. She has successfully recruited over 100 developers to Fatshark. She basically singlehandedly populated all the four floors in their office. That’s amazing! As we were leaving, Aleksandra and Rachel jumped straight into an interview Things get done at Fatshark! 2nd Book Progress – First week of onbirding   In the last few days, I started my first week at Rovio Stockholm. I met some familiar faces, lots of new faces, and encountered generally a very positive and friendly vibe. By the way, that is our studio manager, Johannes Mang :) Due to this, progress has been a bit slower than usual. Also, I ran into a slight problem with my last two scenes which I discovered after finishing them. They took place in the office and a bar. However, at that time the pandemic just began, so I had to rewrite them a bit to take that into account. Next, after all the political powerplay, producer Angelo returns to tactical development of the game, discussing with Simone, the Lead Level Designer, about the resistance of her team to start working on content while the mechanics are still in flux. Her team just hates the fact that the work they are going to do will not end up in the final game. Angelo is getting comments like this: "Because I don't know the dimensions of buildings or structures, I can't allocate appropriate space for them on the map." "Since I don't know how quickly resources are consumed, I can't balance the distribution of resource spots effectively." "Since I don't know the maximum number of units that can be present, I can't scale the map appropriately." All true. And yet, they have to create maps in order to figure those things out. In this phase, it inevitably means that those early maps will not end up in the final game. Angelo notices the team’s misconception - they behave as if they are in production, trying to create player value. But in reality, they are in conception trying to gain knowledge instead. Hi to all. I want to share what I promised. Implementation of management on a mobile device. Made the controls in my mobile game. But I got what I wanted, which was to control turning and firing with the right stick. That is, the left control is only for movement - as you need to run away from enemies. And the correct control, if we control within the outer ring, turns the character, and if we run the drain behind the ring, there is a twist and turn. I love character management, what do you think I'd be interested to hear? Who wants to try, write to me, I can send the apc of my game. #Unity #GameDev #Android

19K games were published on Steam in 2024; amplifying the glut, er...trend. That's a 33% YoY increase. However, the real story here is the % of "Limited Games." Coffee up, nerds... First, let me just say that there are nuances here; I'm expecting a diverse spectrum of experiences and opinions as a result. I'm not making declarations of truth, outside of the data itself. Implications of the data are broad - and they affect different developers in different ways. We good? Caveats, waivers, and disclaimers properly set? I'm just going to assume yes. I'm also going to assume that I'm going to miss a ton here...that's fine though - that's why you're here. Feel free to fill in the gaps, set me straight, or enlighten the class with new perspectives. I'm here for all of it. Ok...so first - what the hell is a "limited game?" Essentially, any game with metrics that do not hit player and sales thresholds (set by Valve corporation), are flagged as "Profile Features Limited." Games in this category do not receive profile customization options (such as badges), limiting their community appeal. Perhaps more importantly: these games do not count toward a player's Game Collector or Achievement Collector totals...meaning a player can not display their prowess of these games to other gamers. Why though? In short: quality control. By holding back features until a game finds an audience, they are able to control which games are validated (for lack of a better term). "Shovelware" is a brutal, cynical term - unfortunately, it is often warranted. Of the 19K games in 2024...how many fit that description...and how many are worth downloading and then lying to yourself that you'll eventually play (truth hurts, eh)? Well...in 2024 - 15K of those 19K games were limited games. That's 79%...is that a lot? It is if you compare it to 2023, when 73% were limited games. In fact, if you look at the data going back to 2018 (when this bifurcation began), 2024 had the highest rate of limited games ever. % of games published per year that were "limited games": 2018 = 33% 2019 = 66% 2020 = 68% 2021 = 71% 2022 = 72% 2023 = 73% 2024 = 79% So what does this tell us? I'm guessing there are some disagreements on whether Valve should be throttling games at all. Games are hard...as anyone who has ever built a game will tell you. Actually, even people who haven't built one will tell you that, because they've heard it so often. "Games are hard" might as well be our industry motto. I do sympathize with Valve here though. Ultimately - I think this makes sense. And...if you think 19K games is a lot...look at UEFN. There are about 140,000 games there now - and that's in under 2 years. The reality is...today, "making games" is easy (thus, the glut). Making GOOD games is hard. Guess I'll open the Pandora's Box: If you consider yourself part of a diverse community, do you also feel that Diversity and Inclusion are being forced into media products like games and shows? If anything, I'm hardly a diverse individual except for my visual disability. Case in point, I'm just a guy who reviews games and below I mention how I see things. I'm annoyed when games visibly force Diversity and Inclusion for the sake of "appealing" to certain communities. I don't have any issues when it's woven naturally into the world and storytelling of a game. But when they make their "Here, we've included a bunch of characters for you" attitude obvious, I can't help but be annoyed. On the other hand, there are people who criticize games that don't have this type of elements visibly included. Take the recent Black Myth: Wukong situation. Where did it all go wrong? Weren't games supposed to be fun and a work of fiction? Do they need to check or not check some political criteria to be good nowadays? As far as I'm concerned, I'll play a game if it's entertaining. Be it if they include a variety of genders or not. If they include a variety of races or not. If they include characters with disabilities or not. Can we please continue creating entertaining games without any not-so-hidden agenda behind them?

"I will block you if you an outsourcer company" I came across a pretty striking message in the "About" section of one of the founders of a mid-sized game development company on LinkedIn. On one hand, I totally get that the flood of messages can be overwhelming. But on the other hand, this kind of thinking seems a bit narrow-minded. If you've been in the game development industry long enough, you realize that outsourcing isn't there to annoy you; they're actually here to help you meet your deadlines. Often, they bring a wealth of expertise and can do so at a lower cost. So, don’t hesitate to delegate some tasks! Embracing outsourcing for sure can lead to better efficiency and allow you to focus on what you do best.

This subject came up this morning with our normal Coffee Chat as we dove into this exact subject (for the umpteenth time). I think this is due to a sudden influx of posts and messages we saw related to end-of-year posts where people who are (understandably and justifiably) frustrated at being out of work for some time are sharing their posts outlining all the problems they're going through right now which lead them to outline that they've been out of work for X-hundred days or have sent Y-thousand resumes out with some tiny amount of response. While I completely understand this desire to let people know how bad it is out there, if your goal is to present yourself as a value-add to a team right now with your ability to overcome challenges and plan ahead for contingencies, this effort is not going to work in the way you may hope for. I get the desire to be heard and to know that others are understanding what you're going through. I absolutely do. But if your goal here is to find work in the industry, I'd gently advise that there's a time and a place for sharing all of your hardships and it's not going to be publicly blasting it for all potential hiring managers to see, whether that's here or in other large professional networks. It's already ridiculously competitive for each role that opens. So unfortunately that means everything you do online is a potential chance to show off why you should be considered for a role over everyone else. And EVERY post you make could be THE one that gets seen by the hiring manager you needed to see you. As we used to say in radio, "you're only as good as your last show" - because even if you have 50 great shows in a row, the only one that matters is the one where the GM for that massive big market station happened to be traveling through your territory at the time you dropped a big goof on air. And seriously - even if you DO manage to get the interviews right and find yourself in a position to negotiate a new offer, think about the position your desperate posts are going to put you in when it comes time to show how much they should pay to get you to come onboard. You need people to understand what you're going through? Grab some friends or family (or therapist if you're in a position to access one) and ask if they can spend some time letting you vent a bit. Let them know what you're going through. Get frustrated. Get angry. Get sad. Go through it. Then, put your stiff upper lip back on and go back to putting on your brave face - they one you'd bring to an interview. The goal here is getting you back on the horse...or in this market, more of a unicorn. I know you've you've fallen, you've bruised, and you're ready to let everyone know how much it hurt to get dropped in the first place - but for if the unicorn feels that, it's not going to stick around and wait for you to figure out how to climb back up again. We're in this together. You've got this. Remember that.

💡 ERROR LOG #6: Constraints are your enem… FRIEND! "Constraints are evil! If creativity loves freedom, why is everyone around me trying to limit me?" I've had this thought many times. At the beginning of my creative path, I simply always thought like that, and after some time, when I was unable to fit into the framework created by the limitations. Later, I realized that my frustrations were either due to lack of skill or lack of patience. There really haven't been many times when I found myself unable to do my job due to the limitations imposed on me. I have many stories on this topic, but the first one that comes to mind is a guideline we established in Cyberpunk 2077 that said "no matter what you do, remember everything is technology and should be able to explain itself logically." Of course, we sometimes took some creative shortcuts here and there, but overall this rule stuck with us very strongly. I remember when I got the creative brief for some of enemy archetypes: "he should be as strong as the Hulk, but of medium size" and the other one "can be as big as the Hulk, but fast as he is slim and athletic" I had the feeling that it was taking the tools out of my hands, seriously. The fact that the Hulk is big and muscular is not a coincidence, his size, weight and strength come exactly from the way he looks. Generally, when you look at him, you immediately know what to expect. In Cyberpunk 2077 we had to reconcile contradictions, and it was both beautiful and difficult at the same time. You may have encountered a huge member of the Animals gang who has a sandevistan implanted in him, which makes him move much faster than you might think at first glance. Additionally, how it works is explained in the lore and is logical from a technological point of view. Ultimately, these limitations led the entire team to look for solutions that are not at our fingertips, which is why we managed to find fresh and creative ideas, which gave a very innovative effect. After a few years of creative work, I began to approach limitations with absolute openness and I realized that, paradoxically, they had a very positive impact on my creative freedom. Limitations force the creator to look at the challenge from a different perspective, which is crucial in the creative process. 📘 I really recommend this book: “The Design of Everyday Things” by Don Norman as it opened my eyes for how much constraints are blessing very often in all design. They are actually crucial and part of it which is amazing especially comparing to what I was thinking about them many years ago. Don't hesitate to comment and share your thoughts please. How I find the most relevant candidate for a role (100% of our customers work with us because of the quality of our profiles) Do your research: don't let fancy titles trick you. 1. Gather as many possible candidates you can (we have 1000+ in our DB) 2. Pass all through a predefined, custom-specific filter 3. Call with the most relevant candidates 4. Reference calls (optional) 5. Never take short-cuts Stop settling for good-enough, start going for perfect-fit. Because no one cares about your challenges, they care about winning. Earn your respect, deliver first.
