Are #Nordic companies ready for #CSRD and aligned with The European Green Deal? Open Sustainability Index, in partnership with We Don't Have Time, released a special report yesterday on CSRD-readiness, focusing on climate reporting and science-based targets of Nasdaq OMX Nordic 120 companies. Some of our findings: ➜ One-third of the companies are well-prepared for #CSRD requirements, with complete and transparent Scope 1-3 GHG emission reporting. ➜ 48.5% of companies report on all three scopes, but 16% need to improve their Scope 3 category disclosure. ➜ 68% have set science-based targets through Science Based Targets initiative; however, only 47% aim for #NetZero by 2050, and 17% have a specific Net Zero target year. ➜ Companies with thorough emission reporting currently outperform in the stock market, yielding a 28% higher return over the past 12 months. ➜ The financial sector lags, with only 24% reporting #investment emissions and 12% setting science-based targets. And why is this important? Net zero fatigue is a thing, but this year's Stocktake sees surprising trends across both #netzero intent and integrity. We had a great media briefing yesterday with journalists and Catherine McKenna, Chair of the UN Secretary-General's UN Expert Group on Net Zero. We need more and better targets — but we also can't retreat from 'stretch goals' to match the pent up elasticity in clean-energy deployment and investment. The Energy Transitions Commission recently found that if governments reflect existing multilateral commitments and current technological advances in their next carbon-cutting NDC climate plans — due very shortly — ambition could nearly triple. Driven by steeper than expected cost reductions, insurgent low-carbon tech is displacing fossil-powered incumbents at a much swifter pace than anyone anticipated. This year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global investment in clean tech should reach $2 trillion for the first time. Last week news! The European Commission has approved a €724 million Danish scheme to reduce the CO₂ emissions tax for certain companies, aimed at preventing "carbon leakage." Carbon leakage is the risk of companies moving production outside the EU to areas with lower environmental regulations, potentially increasing global emissions. Who said the UN, climate policies, and carbon markets are not moving forward? After a long day at Impact Day on Friday, Andrei Belyi messaged me and made my evening even better. "Did you know there has been significant movement regarding Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement in recent days?" That was his question and I had been so engaged with networking that I had no idea. During a meeting in Baku, the UN body responsible for overseeing the Article 6.4 carbon crediting mechanism made several very important decisions. 1. Adoption of mandatory environmental and human rights safeguards to ensure that carbon market projects contribute to sustainable development without harming local communities or ecosystems. 2. A bold move, the supervisory body decided to bypass negotiators and implement the technical standards for carbon methodologies and removals to speed up progress. If any of that didn't make much sense then my translation is: 👉 The carbon markets are clearly seen as an additional kick-starter for climate action and net-zero targets 👉 Improving the quality of carbon projects has become a widely recognized goal that should increase the confidence of companies and credit buyers 👉 The urgency to boost the market and incentivize offsetting is here because scientists' messages have been clear—we can't achieve any of the net-zero goals or maintain the "living standards" we perceive as normal now if we don't take immediate action outside the direct emissions reduction. MARK MY WORDS All companies will be buying carbon credits, offsetting, and making climate-positive actions! Soon it will be a norm. The only difference is that those who don't see it and act on it now: 👉 Pay many times more for the same "product" & 👉 Don't get the brand exposure early adopters do So if I were you I would reconsider those "we only focus on in-setting now" policies. After two months in Mo i Rana and a four-week holiday, I am excited to be back in our amazing Trondheim office 🎉 In past summers, the urgency of the climate crisis made it hard to completely switch off from work. This year, I’ve come to accept that meaningful change takes time. At Ducky, we’ve spent ten years refining our software solutions, while climate action is finally becoming mandatory for companies and municipalities. Our dedicated development team did indeed work hard through the summer to be ready for an exciting autumn. Coming back to work now, fully energized, and with a lot going on, I feel super motivated to get started. Here are some of the reasons why I look forward to this autumn: 📊 Automated climate reporting: Launching in September with Visma, our new tool will simplify and streamline climate reporting, allowing more time for impactful sustainability work. 🏆 Employee engagement: Since the true change in organizations comes from engaged employees, I am looking forward to a new round of Klimakonkurransen, with Framtiden i våre hender. Stay tuned for October!! 🚴🏼 Green mobility: Recognising the challenges municipalities face in promoting green mobility, we’ve teamed up with Telia, Kogenta, It's tomorrow, and Geodata AS to integrate data sources and visualization tools. This fall, we’ll launch several pilots to showcase resource-efficient mobility actions and will measure the effects of local changes. Today, Espen and I were able to schedule our partner meeting at an outdoor café in Trondheim. To speed up the transition to circular products made with renewables, we need communication that makes them utterly desirable while making the status quo completely unappealing. Wool wearers keep their wool garments longer than any other garment and donate their wool purchases more than any other fibre. This helps to slow down fast fashion and accelerate circular production systems. Source: Nielsen Global Wardrobe Study, 2018. Wool can be remade again and again, returning to the earth as wool pellets to retain and hold water, provide nutrients, and increase porosity in the soil. Did you know that most of our biodiversity footprint in Europe is imported? In Finland, a staggering 90% of the biodiversity impacts from food consumption take place in countries other than Finland – even though we grow most of our own food here. In fact, a handful of bio-based products from biodiversity hotspots account for an outsize share of our impacts – among these, coffee, cacao, palm oil, soy, timber, cattle and rubber, which are included in the new EU deforestation legislation. Could we do more to target our efforts at these products? Could demand-side measures, including circular solutions, make a real dent in our biodiversity footprint by complementing our vital existing EU measures to ensure deforestation-free supply chains? To answer these questions, Sitra is working with the SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute York and the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) at Leiden University, and the team has just published a short article on the project at the World Circular Economy Forum WCEF that's starting today in Brussels. If Britain and Ireland become like northern Norway, (that) has tremendous consequences. Our finding is that this is not a low probability, said professor Peter Ditlevsen at the University of Copenhagen, a signatory of the letter from 40 climate scientists to Nordic ministers. "This is not something you easily adapt to." A collapse of the ocean-current system would increase cooling of the Northern Hemisphere, raise Atlantic sea levels, drop precipitation over Europe and North America and shift monsoons in South America and Africa, according to the United Kingdom's Met Office. Global subsidies for fossil fuels reached a record $7 trillion in 2022, according to the International Monetary Fund. Are you looking for a better indicator for progress than GDP? Then check out the “Happy Planet Index”. The “Happy Planet Index (HPI)” combines data on Life Expectancy (Health), self reported Happiness (Wellbeing), and Carbon Footprint (ecological viability). And guess what: Vanuatu, Sweden, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua come out TOP 5 in this index. Germany ranks 35th, China 51st, and the USA 102nd. There are many other interesting findings in the report published by the Hot or Cool Institute building on the work of the New Economics Foundation and the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Nederland : 🌎 Currently, no country achieves sustainable wellbeing – i.e. high levels of life expectancy and self-reported wellbeing within a fair consumption space. However, some countries come closer than others, suggesting that good lives that don’t cost the Earth are within reach. 🌎 The country with the best score is Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific. It achieves a life expectancy of 70.4 years and a self-reported wellbeing score of 7.1 out of 10, all with a carbon footprint that is well below the globally fair share of 3.17 tonnes CO₂e per capita. 🌎 Second place goes to Sweden (83.0 years and 7.4 out of 10 respectively, but with a per capita carbon footprint more than three times bigger). Costa Rica is in fourth place, however achieving some of the highest levels of wellbeing in the world despite a carbon footprint of only 4.4 tonnes CO₂e per capita. 🌎 The top countries have all to some extent consciously and intentionally prioritised the sustainable wellbeing of their citizens over crude economic growth, for example by phasing out fossil fuels in electricity production or by investing in public services more than neighbouring countries. 🌎 Highly interesting to note that within most countries, the lowest HPI scores are to be found at the top of the income distribution. This is not surprising: gains in health and happiness in this group are minuscule in relation to the huge differences in the sizes of their carbon footprints. For example, in the USA, the top 10 per cent of earners have an average carbon footprint of 68.7 tonnes CO₂e per capita, compared to 23.6 tonnes for the eighth income decile, at an increase in life expectancy by 2.4 years and a 0.1 increase in self-reported wellbeing. Lately, people ask me about the differences in sustainability reporting. It is confusing, complex and diverse. How to know which one is a good framework for my company? I'll try to answer this with music. Imagine sustainability reporting as a musical orchestra. You've got the classics - the #GRI, covering all the environmental, social, and governance bases like a full symphony. Then there's the #TCFD, the star violinist, focusing intensely on the financial risks and opportunities of climate change. For enviro-rockers, there's #CDP, a deep dive into specific areas like climate change, deforestation or water, demanding detailed data like a guitar solo. #DJSI, however, is more like the music awards - they don't ask companies to play, but analyze their public sustainability efforts to award a top sustainability ranking. Now, it's getting fancy! ISSB and ESRS are like the conductors for investors. #ISSB focuses on the VIP zone where the people with money are (investor needs), ensuring their ears are satisfied with the pleasant musical notes of clear reporting on financially material sustainability risks; while #ESRS expands the audience, considering both financial and broader stakeholder concerns. Think of ESRS as a conductor who considers the whole concert hall, not just the VIP section. And #SASB? Well, imagine it got merged with ISSB, like a band coming together to form a supergroup! They both focused on financially material topics, but how their styles blend in the ISSB standards is still being written. Finally, the UN Global Compact is less about the music and more about the values. It's like a global music festival where companies commit to ten key principles like human rights and environmental responsibility. Importantly, they don't all play the same song, but they're all playing in harmony for a better world. So, that's the diversity of sustainability reporting! Each standard plays a different role, but together they create a powerful symphony for a more sustainable future. I hope I was not too reductionist with this approach, and it helped as an introduction to #sustainabilityreporting. Which one do you use?

♻️ New EU Circular Economy Act - What do we know so far? ♻️ ✔️ It will be part of the Clean Industrial Deal, the new EU strategy to decarbonise and bring down energy prices, to be published around Q1 2025;  ✔️ The CE Act will be an omnibus legislation and should be published around mid-2026 at the earliest; ✔️ Main goals: reduce administrative burden & secure a level playing field (= better harmonisation of the EU Single Marker); ✔️ Will include revision of the Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive & the Waste Framework Directive (WFD); ✔️ Will include measures around harmonisation of EPR schemes, end of waste criteria & simplication of public procurements rules for targeted sectors (tbc). This, together with the announced omnibus legislation on reporting requirements (#CS3D, #CSRD & #EUTaxonomy) + all the implementing acts on already approved files such as #Ecodesign (ESPR) or #Waste (PPWR),...: who said #sustainability was dead in the EU? #EUGreenDeal *My face, thinking of all the EU sustainability files for the years to come 😅
