RISING business costs, manpower shortages and the need for transformation ranked as the top concerns for Singapore’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), based on the latest annual survey by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) “Sentiment among respondents about this year’s business outlook is mixed,” said SCCCI president Kho Choon Keng, as he previewed key survey findings ahead of its full release later this year. Rising costs are the biggest concern in 2024, cited by 73 per cent of businesses, followed by manpower availability (54 per cent) and business transformation (37 per cent). The top two concerns remain the same as last year, but concerns over uncertain economic and political conditions abroad – which ranked among the top three in 2023 – did not make the list this year.

The historical origins of sustainability law and policy: understanding 50 years of Singaporean environmental policy in the global context I was pleased to host a fireside chat at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy with Ambassador Tommy Koh, Prof. LYE Lin Heng and Dr. Shawn Lum, whose edited book, Peace with Nature, explores the historical roots, and contemporary aspects of 50 years of environmental policy in Singapore. Profs Koh, Lin and Dr Lum recounted to students in my class, "Principles and Policies in Sustainability and the Environment", deftly managed by doctoral student 高鹏 Peng Gao of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability - Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, how specific meetings and agreements and even behind the scenes negotiations, have had profoundly important impacts in shaping Singapore's sustainability journey. The lessons for students of environmental policy is not only that the world has come a long way from the early days of the 1972 Stockholm conference and the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, but that, small countries like Singapore, and individual efforts of visionary leaders, can and do make transformative impacts. With so much attention to forward looking sustainability policies in Singapore, and its cooperation to advance sustainability in ASEAN and beyond, these historical lessons also carry profound insights about how to address, and meet, today's sustainability challenges.

Staying in touch with leadership thinking. This is helpful to position ourselves in good time to ride with the tide for something that is good for Singapore. In a similar vein it is important for us tech people to stay on the edge of new technology if we have a problem to solve. One of the ways would be through our technology partners. Unless the supplier works on a solution we are looking forward to, we are unlikely to apply it quickly enough. We do it to solve our business issues and not apply it for the sake of being leading edge. Leading edge comes with more risks as we don't have precedence that it is acceptable usage. > Let me share an example. In the old days of new relational database tool on not very fast computers, organizations with critical online systems dare not venture into usage for online realtime systems. It may create slow response during peak hours. > I had the privilege to decide on adopting the solution after considering the volume of transactions for the intended use. This is to solve a business need to have a single source of customer information for all products/service types. I managed to get the supplier to buy into the idea and to test the volume usage. We had a win-win situation where special technical support from HQ was given and we learn together to take calculated risks. Congrats to SCS on yet another spectacular Tech3 forum - themed “I Am AI”. Kudos to Sam and SCS Exco and Tech3 forum committee for this excellent turnout, significant launches and wonderful speeches from Sam ,Min Jo and Swee Say. Nice to assemble Swee Say, KC Lee, Bee Kwan and myself to remind us of our configuration in 1996 when Swee Say was chair of NCB and briefly NCS(until merger with Singtel), KC was the CEO of NCS, Bee Kwan was cluster CIO with NCB morphing into IDA and I was GM/COO at NCS. What is common amongst us is that we are all SCS members. Great to see SCS continuing its alliance with various industries including Association of advertising and Marketing, Singapore and the Singapore Association of Motion Pictures today. Glad to meet up with Bernard Chan, a stalwart and guru in the Media industry and CEO of AAMS. Today also marks an important Launch of our AI Ethics and Governance 2.0 that is an substantial update over the 1.0 version with the recent advances in Gen AI, LLM and with perspective as to how we could govern these amidst the rapid evolution of this space. Kudos to Raju Chellam, Chief Editor for delivering yet another massive project, and to Lee Joon-Seong, Jeffrey Lim, Tony Tay, Ow Jia Rong, Jennifer Ong, Seah Mee Ling, Rachel See Tho and our many eminent contributors.
