  • Analysis of star ratings in consumer reviews: A case study of Yelp

Big Data (Big Data), 2015 IEEE International Conference

This paper presents an analysis of star ratings in consumer reviews in Yelp, an online social platform for sharing consumer reviews about local businesses. In particular, we analyze consumer reviews about food businesses. We analyze how well or poorly the star ratings (on a scale of one star to five stars) associated with these reviews tally with the sentiment derived from the textual portion of the consumer review.

  • Ad-Hoc Automated Teller Machine Failure Forecast and Field Service Optimization

As part of its overall effort to maintain good customer service while managing operational efficiency and reducing cost, a bank in Singapore has embarked on using data and decision analytics methodologies to perform better ad-hoc ATM failure forecasting and plan the field service engineers to repair the machines. We propose using a combined Data and Decision Analytics Framework which helps the analyst to first understand the business problem by collecting, preparing, and exploring data to gain business insights, before proposing what objectives and solutions can and should be done to solve the problem. This paper reports the work in analyzing past daily ad-hoc ATM failures, forecasting ad-hoc ATM failures and then using the forecasted results to optimize the number of field service engineers to deploy in each geographical zone, to minimize the number of daily unattended ad-hoc ATM failures. The optimization model ensures that the least number of engineers are deployed in each zone on each day. However, to maintain a consistent number of engineers for a 2-week schedule, we recommend to deploy the maximum number of engineers in each zone within the 2 weeks. The resulting surplus engineer idle hours is reduced, and it represents a cost savings of 28.6% when compared with the bank’s current practice.

  • After Analytics, What's Next?

    SAS Global Forum 2012

After gathering great insights from our data, the next steps would be devising and executing the strategy based on these insights. After gathering great insights from our data, the next steps would be devising and executing the strategy based on these insights. Strategy planning and execution can be seen as both an art and a science. Without proper planning and execution, these insights that we gathered would be meaningless. Many frameworks have been devised to help businesses in their strategy planning and execution. But most of them have generally been used at corporate level; for instance Balanced Scorecards.

Here we introduce a framework, adapted from an ancient treatise of war, “Sun Zi Art of War,” that can provide a strong framework at the strategy planning and execution stage so that analysts can assess the feasibility of their devised strategy.

  • Perils of Ignoring Social Media

    SAS Global Forum

In 2010, we saw Social Media gaining influence over consumers while businesses remain apprehensive of engaging conversations online. Consumers have no qualms in making their voices heard on Social Media at all. Moreover, Social Media has become an avenue for consumers to seek more information before they make their purchase or patronize a service provider. Such behavior is even more prevalent with the coming of smartphones. Smartphones have developed a big group of “untethered” consumers that…

Consumers have no qualms in making their voices heard on Social Media at all. Moreover, Social Media has become an avenue for consumers to seek more information before they make their purchase or patronize a service provider. Such behavior is even more prevalent with the coming of smartphones. Smartphones have developed a big group of “untethered” consumers that together with the abovementioned behavior, has offered “real-time” information to the communities they reside in and thus may affect buying decisions by the hundreds. In this paper, we are going to illustrate with examples of how businesses have responded to the challenges that social media brought to them.

  • Using Facebook to engage SAS Users

    SAS Global Forum 2012

Social media has become a regular and common platform for organizations and businesses to engage relevant stakeholders. This is a very surprising phenomenon given that social media has taken its current form within the past few years. Because it is a new technology, there is no proper literature on how social media should be used to achieve designated objectives. As such, the use of social media is by trial and error, gaining lessons from the usage experience.

Here we would like to share…

  • Application of Analytics in Business Strategy

    Business Intelligence Journal

In the most well-known ancient treatise of war, Sun Tzu Art of War, the following quote was made by Sun Tzu, He who knows his enemy and himself well will not be defeated easily. The current literature lacks the discussion of analytics on the strategic planning and execution. As such in this paper we are going to discuss more about using analytics where possible to improve upon the strategy planning and execution. This paper will at times use quotes from Sun Tzu Art of War as support for analytics application in strategic planning and execution.
