The Singapore asset management industry has seen good growth over the years. Assets under management (AUM) recorded S$5.4 trillion as at end 2023, and grew by 10% yoy. Private markets was a strong contributor to this growth as PE/VC AUM grew by close to 25% (5-year CAGR) to S$650 billion. Singapore ended 2023 with positive net AUM inflows of close to S$200bn as well. Singapore continues to be an attractive jurisdiction for 1,250 global and regional asset managers to base their investment teams for allocations into the region. To enhance asset managers’ economic substance operating in Singapore, many have also set up their investment funds locally. More than 1,000 Variable Capital Companies (VCC) have been incorporated to date. Given the flexibility of the corporate structure, the VCC continues to be an attractive vehicle for both public and private market use cases. The Singapore asset management and funds ecosystem is well supported by a full range of fund service providers and professional services firms. HKEX to Digitalise ETP Servicing Capabilities with Online Platform Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) is pleased to announce today (Tuesday) plans to digitise and automate the in-kind creation and redemption process for relevant exchange-traded products (ETP) in 2025 through the adoption of a web-based platform, subject to technical readiness and regulatory approval. This platform will be integrated into the ETP creation and redemption process, connecting key ETP participants with the use of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and smart contracts, and will help increase overall ETP market efficiency, supporting the continued growth of secondary market activity for ETPs. OTC Clear today started accepting the Ministry of Finance and Mainland policy banks onshore bonds held under Northbound Bond Connect (CGBs) by offshore investors as margin collateral for Northbound Swap Connect transactions. Building upon the arrangement, the #SFC, together with the People’s Bank of China and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, have reached a consensus that offshore investors will be able to use CGBs as margin collateral for all other eligible derivative transactions cleared in OTC Clear. This new initiative will broaden the use of onshore bonds as collateral in the offshore market. Global institutional investors will be able to benefit from further reduction in liquidity cost with more efficient use of their onshore RMB bonds as non-cash collateral when clearing with OTC Clear. In a recent interview with BFM 89.9, a Malaysian independent business and current affairs-oriented radio station, Jerry Goh, CFA an investment director with #abrdn's Asian Equities team, shares his latest thoughts on Indonesia. Some key points below: 1. The Indonesian equity market has performed poorly year to date, due to a unexpected rate hike and weakness in the banking sector in terms of results and monthly data that have resulted in outflows. 2. We are hearing quite a lot of noise during this political transition period, with Prabowo Subianto officially taking over from Joko Widodo as President only in October. It make sense to wait and see, and we are looking to the economic focus of the new government, on top of Jokowi's downstreaming initiative. 3. The rupiah currency recently hit a four-year against the US dollar, and the market is already pricing in a worst-case scenario of a more hawkish US Fed. Along with Bank Indonesia already raising rates to stabilise the currency, we expect the rupiah to be relatively stable and are keeping an eye on the policy trajectory as well as domestic inflation and growth data. 4. We remain focused on quality companies that are still growing decently, continue to protect minority interests and demonstrate resilience during this volatile period. 5. We are positive about the country's longer-term prospects, as its favourable demographics, with a vibrant young population, will continue to contribute to consumption and broader economic growth. Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC is bracing for a period of “profound uncertainty” as the fund looks to rely on more “granular” diversification and maintaining price discipline to traverse the environment.
