📢 The CCSA’s CEO Olivia Powis responds to the Conservative Party’s revised position on net zero. This follows Party Leader Kemi Badenoch’s speech where she put forward that it would be “impossible” for the UK to reach net zero by 2050 and subsequent commentary from climate champions rebutting the change of position. 🗨️ Read Olivia’s full response👇 “Net zero by 2050 is absolutely achievable and will drive economic growth, particularly through technologies such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). Legislating on net zero has driven investment – and despite pressures on financing, global investment in clean energy was set to reach USD 2 trillion in 2024 almost double the amount going to fossil fuels. In 2015, the ratio of clean power to unabated fossil fuel power investments was roughly 2:1 and in 2024, this ratio was set to reach 10:1. Having a clear target galvanises action and investments in a low carbon economy, which will benefit industry, civil society and our local industrial regions.” “Net zero is crucial not only for tackling climate change but generating economic growth. Our analysis shows that by delivering all CCUS clusters and projects across the UK, over 50,000 jobs could be generated, £26bn in private investment attracted into the UK and £94bn in GVA contributed by 2050.” “It is through the deployment of technologies like CCUS that the UK will be able to scale up domestic energy production, safeguard our foundational industries and produce low-carbon projects for the global market, all by 2050. It has been encouraging that leading Conservative climate champions such as Rt Hon Chris Skidmore, former Energy Minster, and John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben, former Chair of the Climate Change Committee, continue to emphasise the need to stay the course on net zero. The scientific evidence is clear on why it’s needed and if the UK economy is to grow, demonstrating climate leadership in action will continue to attract significant sums of green investment.” #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero | #ClimateAction | #GreenJobs | #Investment | #EnergySecurity

A whole week of CCUS events! This week, our Brussels team participated in several CCUS-related events in Brussels and across Europe. A few (brief) takeaways from those I had the pleasure to speak at: 🔹IOGP Europe "This is not a bank" CCS Multistakeholder Workshop: Regulatory visibility and incentives are crucial to getting into the deployment phase. Assessing correct time scales will play a key role, alongside financial mechanisms, such as CCfDs, in de-risking investments. 🔹Global CCS Institute 2025 Europe Forum on CCS: Where are we with CO2 Transport? It's no secret that CO2 transport topics will keep us busy in the coming months, and it was a pleasure to chair a session on this topic with Bruno Gerrits. Complementarity of pipeline and non-pipeline transport modes will be crucial, along with defining the proper mechanisms to support integrated investments. 🔹EASEE-gas panel discussion ''Future synergies in energy transition'': Pragmatism and a technology-neutral approach can't be underestimated (anymore). We shared opinions and ideas with actors from different sectors, closing with a common perspective: all technologies will play an important role, and CCUS will be an essential part of the equation in our race to net zero. All in all, a dynamic week!

📣 Great to see carbon capture highlighted several times during this week’s Energy Security and Net Zero Oral Questions in UK Parliament: 🔹 Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland and Co-Chair of the CCUS APPG, urged the Government to reaffirm its commitment to CCUS and create a Europe-wide CO₂ market. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called it the economic opportunity of our time, highlighting investment in carbon capture. 🔹 Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes and member of the CCUS APPG, emphasised CCUS’s importance for the Humber, with Minister Sarah Jones confirming plans to meet the Humber Energy Board. 🔹 Matthew Patrick, MP for Wirral West, and Richard Baker, MP for Glenrothes and Mid Fife, raised questions about CCUS development. Secretary Miliband referenced the £21.7 billion funding for HyNet and the East Coast Cluster, with updates on The Acorn Project and Viking CCS expected after the spending review. 🔹 Seamus Logan, MP for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East, sought clarity on The Acorn Project’s timeline. Secretary Miliband confirmed decisions will be made in June, calling it a “really important project.” 🔹 Edward Morello, MP for West Dorset, and Steffan Aquarone MP for North Norfolk, highlighted carbon removal technologies and green hydrogen development. Secretary Miliband affirmed support for both, including the Bacton energy hub. 🔹 Rt Hon Stephen Flynn, MP for Aberdeen South, sought reassurance on the Chancellor’s support for The Acorn Project. Secretary Miliband expressed confidence in the Government’s net zero commitment. 💪 Deploying CCUS across the UK will deliver economic growth, energy security, and create highly-skilled jobs. It's therefore important that the Government progresses with the clusters and projects that follow Teesside and Merseyside, particularly in the Humber and Scotland as well as the wider pipeline of projects aiming to deliver within the same timeframe. #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero

🔎 Yesterday, some of the CCSA London team visited Drax Group's Power Station in Selby, North Yorkshire, to explore the potential of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). BECCS is a critical solution for achieving the UK’s net zero targets. It uniquely combines renewable energy generation with permanent carbon removal, making it one of the few scalable technologies capable of delivering up to 8 million tonnes of ‘negative emissions’ per year – equivalent to two thirds of the Humber region’s industrial emissions today. 🔹 Reliable Power: BECCS provides dispatchable, low-carbon electricity, essential for balancing the grid and providing critical grid services complementing variable wind and solar generation. The biomass station today already plays an important role in energy security, powering in the region of 4 million homes. 🔹Sustainable Biomass Sourcing: Drax uses waste materials like sawmill residues and thinnings, ensuring sustainable resource use while reducing net CO₂ emissions. ⚡ The National Energy System Operator has identified the need for 4.3 – 6.5 GW of low-carbon dispatchable power by 2030, with 4 GW of biomass or Power BECCS generation playing a pivotal role. Without BECCS, the UK risks falling short of its climate and energy security goals. Huge thanks to Drax Group for hosting the team. #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero
