We are the UK's national charity for craft
About us
We are the national charity for craft. We inspire making, empower learning, and nurture businesses. We believe that craft skills and knowledge enrich and uplift us as individuals and in doing so will change our world for the better. Established by Royal Charter in 1971, we are funded by Arts Council England as well as through fund raising and earned income activities. Society has faced unprecedented challenges in recent times and craft has shown its value; from the many volunteers making scrubs for the NHS through to the rise in craft making at home during lockdown. Yet many craft businesses have suffered a drastic loss of income and need our support. Our goal is to be an impactful organisation that can: • champion craft and its positive impact on society • increase levels of craft education at all ages • grow the market for craft With our new public space for craft recently opened and our fiftieth anniversary to celebrate, there’s never been a more exciting time to work at the Crafts Council.

Last week we saw the government issue it’s 'Curriculum and Assessment Review Interim Report' which responds to the 7000+ consultation responses submitted – including one from Crafts Council. We’re pleased to see it acknowledges some of the critical challenges facing craft education, though we urge for a more explicit and robust focus on our sector. Since being published we've written our own response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review. Our response addresses: 🎨 The impact of craft on development and wellbeing 🎨 The positive impact of craft on the economy 🎨 The decline of hands-on making in schools ...and more! Find out more about the report and read our response here: https://bit.ly/43qPWYd 📸: Still from Craft School Yinka's Challenge video. Videographer unknown.

‘Parenthood is beautiful, but when it comes to becoming a mother, women are often seized with the terror of losing everything we’ve strived for – our career, our way of life – because of the negative way it is portrayed,’ says ceramic artist Noe Kuremoto. This #InternationalWomensDay we are celebrating all mothers who make. Whether your a business-owner, or sneak craft into your busy schedule as a hobby, today we are taking the time to share our appreciation and recognise your contribution to the creative sector!
