DB Cargo UK and its sister company DB Cargo Polska are combining years of engineering excellence to breathe new life into 60 BAA wagons for Tata Steel. The refurbished wagons, which will be capable of carrying steel slab and/or coil, are essential to support Tata Steel’s £1.25 billion transition in the UK from traditional iron and steel production to the use of cleaner and greener electric arc furnace technology. DB Polska is currently manufacturing new 40ft wagon frames for the BAAs at its state-of-the-art engineering facility in Rybnik, Poland, which are then being sent to the UK for final fitting, assembly and testing at DB Cargo UK’s wagon maintenance facility at Stoke. At the UK’s first net zero rail freight terminal in Cricklewood, North London, we’ve installed one of Europe’s largest green acoustic barriers to minimise the impact of our operations on the local community. The 18m-high structure provides a natural carbon sink for the site and protects local properties from noise and dust, as we go about importing aggregates and exporting waste materials from construction sites across the capital. DB Cargo UK is proud to have created the UK’s first net zero rail freight terminal at Cricklewood in North London – and so are our colleagues! Sustainability is something our colleagues are passionate about, driving our ambition to minimise the impact of our rail freight activities on the environment and the communities in which we operate. At Cricklewood we’re not just minimising our impact on the environment, we’re actively enhancing it and setting a new standard for the rail freight sector. To find out more about how we’ve slashed the carbon footprint of our terminal at Cricklewood, visit https://lnkd.in/edQgMAUC #TeamRed #railfreight #sustainability #environment #freightbelongsonrail

DB Cargo UK is proud to announce that we’ve created what we believe to be the UK’s first ‘net zero’ rail freight terminal. Situated in Cricklewood, North London, our terminal is used to transport aggregates and construction waste in and out of the capital, significantly reducing congestion on London’s already crowded road network. But it’s the introduction of a wide range of other environmental mitigation measures that have really slashed the site’s carbon footprint, including construction of one of Europe’s largest ‘living’ acoustic barriers. DB Cargo (UK) Limited reposted this
We are delighted to have been awarded a new warrant by His Majesty King Charles III to maintain and operate the Royal Train. We have now held the royal warrant since rail privatisation, marking more than 30 years’ continuous service to the Royal Household. Welcoming the news, our Chief Executive Andrea Rossi said: “This is a tremendous honour for the company which comes with huge responsibility as we are trusted to safely carry senior members of the Royal Family across the UK rail network. “There’s always a great sense of occasion when the Royal Train is seen out on the mainline network, a sight we hope to see more frequently in the years to come, particularly with His Majesty’s focus on promoting sustainability and the environment,” he added. We will now begin the process of changing the Royal Cypher and nameplates on the Queen’s Messenger 67005, which will be renamed King’s Messenger. Royal Sovereign 67006 will also have a new Royal Cypher but retain its name. #railfreight #TeamRed

It was a pleasure to welcome Koncept Rail Solutions Ltd's team to DB Cargo HQ last week. It was time well spent as we continue to collaborate with partners of the East Coast Digital Programme to digitalise UK rail. #ERTMS #ECDP #DigitalRailway #Collaboration
As part of our commitment to developing technical knowledge and experience within our PMO, members of our project team visited DB Cargo’s ERTMS Training Facilities in Doncaster last week. The visit included hands-on experience with Ultra Lite Simulators and the full Class 66 Cab Simulator, offering valuable insight into train control and operational procedures. The scenario development session truly brought the work we do in the sector to life. Undertaking these Simulation Sessions, facilitated by DB Cargo’s experienced instructors, strengthened our knowledge of ERTMS and its practical implementation. We are very grateful to DB Cargo (UK) Limited and their ERTMS Project Team for inviting us to experience their excellent training facility and sharing their expertise with us. #ERTMS #eastcoastdigitalprogramme #collaboration #team #thankyou #simulation #DBcargo

DB Cargo UK is delighted to announce that we have signed a major contract with Siemens Mobility to begin fitting the new European Train Control System (ETCS) to the UK’s Class 66 freight locomotives. Work will begin in July to fit the new in-cab signalling system to nine Class 66 locomotives (all owned by DB Cargo UK), with the work being undertaken at our Toton Depot in the East Midlands. The work, which is scheduled to be completed in March 2026, is the first phase of a national programme, which will eventually see all our Class 66 locomotives fitted with ETCS as part of the roll-out of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in the UK. As National Apprenticeship Week comes to a close we’re pleased to introduce Thomas, our Assistant Procurement Manager working towards his CIPS Level 4 qualification through an apprenticeship. Thomas chose the apprenticeship route because it gave him the opportunity to advance his skills while learning on the job. “I wanted to develop professionally while contributing to the business. The apprenticeship has allowed me to do just that.” What Thomas enjoys most about his role is how his learning is directly tied to his work. With the support of his manager, Thomas set clear targets that integrated his apprenticeship into his day-to-day tasks, making sure each goal was aligned with his development. So what’s Thomas’s advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship? Thomas encourages them to think about the long-term benefits: “It’s a great way to grow, not just for the individual but for the business too. It’s all about continuous learning and development.” #NAW2025 #railfreight #TeamRed #apprenticeships

Meet Laura, one of our Level 3 Rail Engineering Technician apprentices based at Toton we’re introducing as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025. Laura chose an apprenticeship as a pathway to transition into the railway industry. She shared, “It’s a great way to gain the skills relevant to the industry.” Moving into rail was a familiar environment for Laura with many family members working in the industry and leading her to look at opportunities within DB Cargo. What Laura values most is working alongside skilled individuals who are willing to share their expertise. She says, “I’m really grateful for everyone’s time and support since starting”. “I’ve built such good relationships with my appreciate cohort too – it’s so nice to work with friendly, likeminded people”. Adapting to a new career and learning a different skill set has been challenging for Laura, but she’s felt supported at each step. Despite anticipating feeling intimidated as a female in a male dominated environment, Laura quickly felt at home, saying, “I look forward to coming to work and being part of the team.” So what’s Laura’s advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship? “Definitely look into it! I haven’t looked back. It’s a great way to get hands on experience, earn a wage, and set yourself up for a brighter future.” #NAW2025 #railfreight #TeamRed #apprenticeships

DB Cargo UK is the leading provider of breakdown and recovery services to the UK rail industry and we’ve recently taken delivery of a fleet of new vans to bolster our operations. The ten new vans will be put into service across England, Scotland and Wales, providing a permanent replacement to our ageing fleet of Bruff road/rail vehicles which were taken out of service in 2023. The new, 7 tonne vans, will carry heavy-lifting and other recovery equipment, and have been specially adapted to ensure our recovery teams will be able to access even the remotest regions of the UK’s rail network. Head of Asset Management and Maintenance Jon Harman MBA MA FCILT said this latest investment would give the teams greater agility and ensure a speedier response to incidents. “The Bruff road/rail vehicles were built for us back in 1999 and have served us well over the years but the requirement to put them on the tracks when responding to incidents has greatly reduced. They will now be disposed of. “The equipment we use to recover locomotives and wagons has also become more compact and mobile, which means it’s easier to transport and these new vans are more than capable of delivering what we need on a day-to-day basis,” he added. Breakdown and Recovery Manager Sean Coulby CMgr MCMI said “This is a significant investment we’re making in our breakdown and recovery service which plays a pivotal role when things go wrong on the rail network. “As well as recently expanding the number of depots we operate out of, over the past two years we have also invested more than £2 million in new welfare vans and lifting equipment to improve our overall response to incidents,” he added. “Our teams work is both physically and mentally demanding and is often undertaken in challenging environments and harsh weather conditions. We’ve worked hard to ensure they have everything they need when out on site, which can sometimes be for weeks at a time,” he added.
